Isla let out a soft whimper as she slowly opened her eyes, confusion flickering in her gaze. She clutched her tiny arm, her face twisting in pain.
Leo immediately dropped to his knees beside her. "Isla! Are you okay?" His voice was trembling.
Ambrose stood near the counter, gripping the knife he had been using to cut the watermelon. He had seen her fall, yet he didn't move. Instead, he sighed and muttered, "That's what happens when kids don't listen."
Leo's eyes snapped up to him, anger flashing. "You saw her fall, and you didn't help?!"
Isla's lips quivered as she sniffled, trying to be brave. "Mommy would've helped me..." she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.
