Ever settled on the couch, pulling Isla and Leo close as they eagerly stared up at her. It had become their little tradition bedtime stories about her past. But tonight, their curiosity was different.
"Mommy, how did you fall in love with Dr. Carter?" Isla asked, twirling a strand of her hair.
Leo scrunched his nose. "Yeah! Did he give you candy?"
Ever chuckled. "No, sweetheart. It wasn't candy. It was… his brain."
Leo and Isla blinked in confusion. "Ew, Mommy! That sounds gross!" Leo groaned, making a face.
Ever laughed. "Not like that! I meant, I admired how smart he was. Nathaniel was always number one in school. No one could beat him in math or science. He was like a walking encyclopedia."
"So, you loved a nerd?" Isla asked, giggling.
Ever smirked. "I wouldn't call him a nerd. I'd say… he was a genius. And I had my own talent too."
