Chapter 8 - Mother by Chance

Chapter 8: On the Run

Alex's heart was racing as they made their way out of the apartment. She couldn't believe that Ethan's cover had been blown, and that they were now in grave danger.

As they reached the car, Ethan quickly unlocked the door and motioned for Alex to get in. Alex didn't hesitate, jumping into the passenger seat as Ethan started the engine.

"What's the plan?" Alex asked, her voice shaking with fear.

Ethan's eyes were fixed on the road as he sped away from the apartment. "We need to get out of town," he said, his voice firm. "We'll head to a safe house that the marshal has set up for us."

Alex nodded, trying to process everything that was happening. She couldn't believe that her life had been turned upside down in just a few hours.

As they drove, Alex couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being followed. She kept looking over her shoulder, expecting to see a car tailing them.

Ethan noticed her nervousness and reached out to take her hand. "We'll be okay," he said, his voice reassuring. "The marshal will take care of us."

Alex nodded, trying to believe Ethan's words. But as they drove further and further away from the apartment, Alex couldn't shake off the feeling that they were running out of time.

The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the landscape. But Alex couldn't appreciate the beauty of the scene. She was too scared, too anxious about what might happen next.

Suddenly, Ethan's phone rang again. He hesitated for a moment before answering.

"Yes?" he said, his voice cautious.

Alex watched as Ethan's expression changed from cautious to shocked.

"What is it?" Alex asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan's eyes locked on hers. "It's the marshal," he said, his voice low and serious. "He says that the safe house has been compromised. We can't go there."

Alex's heart sank. Where could they go now?

As Ethan ended the call, Alex knew that their situation had just gotten a lot more desperate. They were on their own, with no safe place to hide.

"What are we going to do?" Alex asked, her voice shaking with fear.

Ethan's face was grim, his eyes scanning the road ahead. "We'll find a new place to hide," he said, his voice firm. "We'll be okay."

But as they drove on, Alex couldn't shake off the feeling that they were running out of options. They were on their own, with no one to trust.

And then, out of the corner of her eye, Alex saw a car following them. Her heart skipped a beat as she turned to look.

"Ethan," she said, her voice low and urgent. "We're being followed."

Ethan's eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, and his face went white.

"Hold on," he said, his voice ight with tension. "We're going to lose them."
