Synopsis

Jumpchain Basics

Jumpchains are a type of choose-your-own adventure, with vibrant communities on Reddit, Questionable Questing, Space Battles, Discord, 4Chan, and Discord. This auxiliary chapter is helpful for people new to jumpchains and will contain some basic information about them.

In-universe a "Jumpchain" refers to the totality of one's journey. Individual "Jumps" are legs on that journey, links in a chain of journeys that form a grander adventure across the multi or omniverse. Usually "Jumps" send the protagonists to fictional settings, but sometimes a jump sends someone to an original world (which is the case with the combined "First Jump" in this story), or to stranger places like echoes of the real world that have them begin in the past distant, the present, or the near future.

"Jump Documents" are real-world, and also in-universe, forms that contain information on "Perks" (powers one can buy using Choice Points derived from traits, powers, and knowledge in the setting), "Items" (objects, properties, and other physical things that follow a "Jumper" or protagonist on a chain across their journey, appearing in each new setting or universe a character enters jump after jump, and like "Perks" these are derived from the settings they come from), and other information on the world or worlds one will be visiting and living in during their time in an individual jump. Jump documents also contain information on the settings they are inspired by, scenarios (or missions in the jump that if completed confer special rewards), and drawbacks (challenges that make a setting different, and usually make a jumper's life worse, in exchange for more points).

Usually jumpers have limited points to use in each setting, to spend throughout on a jumpdoc's given library of perks and items making them think carefully about a given setting's dangers and the problems that they can overcome to decide whether or not to take drawbacks for extra points. This story will be ignoring that, through various workarounds that will allow the protagonist to grow in power in different ways (though interesting drawbacks are likely to be incorporated in ways more subtle and narrative than a character selecting them like options in a video game).

Individual jumps have three phases. The first phase is a safe phase wherein a jumper gets to design their build. That is normally a more complex and involved process than we see in chapter one, but in future jumps that will be changed. The second phase is the danger phase, the time a jumper is IN the world. We have seen the start of that partway through chapter one. The third phase is the ending phase, after a decade (or some other period of time depending on a jumper's choices), wherein a jumper gets to decide whether or not they are going to continue their chain and move to a new place to repeat phases 1-3 again.Â
