Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

Lila walked away from the hotel, her mind swirling with confusion and uncertainty. She had agreed to think about Charles Blackwell's offer but what it really meant, she couldn't yet grasp. She didn't need to look far to find Damon waiting by her car, his expression a mix of concern and frustration.

"Well?" he asked, his voice low.

Lila shook her head, dropping into the passenger seat. "It's… more complicated than I thought."

Damon got into the driver's seat, his jaw set. "What did he say?"

"He wants me to inherit his empire," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "But it's not just that. He wants me to carry on his legacy."

Damon's eyes darkened. "And what do you want?"

"I don't know," she admitted, staring out the window. "I feel like everything's spinning out of control. And now this offer from a man who didn't even want me as a child."

Damon reached for her hand, his touch grounding. "Lila, you don't have to do this. You don't owe him anything."

"I know," she said, her voice shaking. "But it's not just about him. It's about what this means for me. Am I strong enough to take on this responsibility?"

"Only you can answer that," Damon said softly. "But don't decide now. Take the time you need to figure it out."

Later that evening, Lila found herself alone in her room, her mind a storm of conflicting emotions. She reached for her mother's old photo album, flipping through the faded pictures. Faces stared back at her, her mother, so young and full of life; a smiling Charles Blackwell; and strangers who seemed to lurk in the background.

There was a knock on the door and Aiden walked in, his expression cautious. "Mind if I join you?"

"Not at all," she said, giving him a small smile.

He took a seat beside her on the bed, leaning back on his hands. "How are you holding up?"

Lila shrugged. "Okay, I guess. Just trying to make sense of everything."

"I can't imagine what this is like for you," Aiden said, his voice gentle. "Dealing with a father you never knew and now being told you have to take on this huge responsibility."

"I don't know if I can," she confessed. "I don't know if I want it."

Aiden took her hand, his fingers tightening. "Lila, whatever you decide, it's okay. You're not obligated to do anything. Just think about what makes you happy."

"But what if this is what's supposed to make me happy?" she asked, her voice wavering. "What if I'm supposed to be Charles Blackwell's heir?"

Aiden shook his head. "Lila, you're not obligated to carry on his legacy if it's not what you want. You're not him. You don't have to do anything because he says so."

Just then, Damon appeared at the door, his expression tense. "What's going on in here?"

"Just talking," Aiden said, his tone cool.

Damon's eyes flicked between them. "Lila doesn't need both of us in her space right now. You should go."

Aiden's jaw tightened. "I'm not leaving until she's okay."

"Enough!" Lila's voice cut through the tension like a knife. "I can't do this anymore. I don't want to have to choose between you two. This isn't helping."

Both men fell silent, guilt and hurt flickering in their eyes.

"I just need some time," she said, her voice breaking. "Some time to think and figure things out. Please."

Aiden and Damon exchanged a tense glance before leaving the room without another word. Lila lay back on her bed, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on her. She closed her eyes, her mind racing with all the possibilities, the past she'd just discovered, and the uncertain future awaiting her.
