Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: The Price of Power

The Gremory Estate - Training Grounds

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting an orange glow over the sprawling Gremory estate. Ahmed stood in the middle of the training ground, his body tense and ready for the next challenge. Beside him, Koneko was preparing herself for another round of intense training. The past few weeks had been grueling, but every day, they had grown stronger together.

But tonight, there was something different in the air. The usual calm in Ahmed's heart had been replaced by a sense of unease. He had been pushing his body to its limits, and the constant progression of his power had started to weigh on him.

> [Skill Progression: Strength – +1 point]

[Stat Increase: Endurance – 10 points]

Koneko noticed the change in him. She stepped forward, her quiet voice breaking the silence.

> "You've been pushing yourself too hard, Ahmed."

Ahmed paused, his brow furrowing slightly. His muscles were sore, his body on the edge of exhaustion, but he couldn't stop. Not now. Not when there was so much at stake.

> "I need to get stronger, Koneko," he said, his voice tight with determination. "Every day, I'm getting closer to what I want to achieve. I can't afford to slow down now."

She approached him, her golden eyes softening as she looked at him. There was a concern in her gaze, something that he hadn't seen in a long time. Koneko had always been reserved, but in the past weeks, he had seen the quiet worry in her eyes more often.

> "We all have our limits," she said softly. "Pushing too hard could break you."

Ahmed smiled faintly, his expression softening just for a moment.

> "I'm not going to break," he said. "I've already been broken once. I'm not going back to that."

He turned away, his eyes focused on the horizon. He was determined to keep moving forward.

But something inside him stirred—a feeling of unease, a whisper that told him he was on the edge of something much bigger than just physical training. His Gamer System had been upgrading rapidly, but there was a price to pay.

The Dark Side of Progression

As Ahmed trained, his body grew stronger, but his mind was starting to feel the strain. Every increase in strength, every new perk unlocked, brought with it an inner restlessness. He had noticed it the first time he pushed past 50 points in strength—there was a shift, a hunger that started to grow. And now, as his stats reached higher and higher thresholds, that hunger was becoming impossible to ignore.

> [Stat Increase: Strength – 100 points]

[Perk Unlocked: Power Surge – Increases physical power by 50% temporarily.]

> [Stat Increase: Luck – 10 points (allocated from level up)]

[Perk Unlocked: Lucky Strike – Increases chances of critical hits by 15%.]

The power surges were becoming more frequent, and Ahmed had started to realize the toll they took on his body. The urge to grow stronger was overwhelming, but it was slowly consuming him, making him less focused on the people around him.

Koneko had noticed it, too. She saw the change in him—how he had started to become obsessed with power, unable to break free from the constant drive to improve.

One evening, as the two of them trained together, Ahmed's muscles screamed in protest as he performed his hundredth push-up, his arms trembling under the strain. His breath came in short, sharp bursts, and the growing ache in his chest was unbearable. But the Gamer System's notification popped up again, signaling the completion of another task.

> [Skill Progression: Physical Pain Tolerance – +2 points]

[Stat Increase: Strength – 120 points]

[Perk Unlocked: Overload – Increases strength beyond normal limits but strains the body.]

A surge of power filled his veins, and his body screamed as his strength spiked once again. The feeling was intoxicating, and for a brief moment, Ahmed thought he might push through the pain and continue training for hours. But then, he saw Koneko watching him, concern etched on her face.

> "Ahmed, stop," she urged. "You're hurting yourself."

He looked up at her, sweat pouring down his face, his eyes burning with intensity.

> "I can't stop," he growled, his voice rough with exhaustion. "Not until I'm strong enough. I need this power. You don't understand. I have to be ready for anything."

Koneko stepped closer, her voice quieter now.

> "I understand more than you think."

For the first time, she reached out, placing a gentle hand on his arm. Ahmed flinched slightly, surprised by her touch, but the warmth of it settled into his chest.

> "You've been through so much already," she said softly. "But there are other ways to get stronger. You don't have to do this alone. You don't have to push yourself until you break."

The words hit him harder than he expected. He stared at Koneko, her words sinking into his heart. He had been so focused on achieving strength, on becoming powerful enough to protect everyone, that he had forgotten what truly mattered.

Power was important, but so was the journey. He had to learn how to trust, how to lean on others, and how to take care of himself.

The Decision to Slow Down

That night, as Ahmed lay in his bed, staring at the ceiling, he made a decision. The path to power wasn't just about training endlessly. It was about balance. He would continue to grow, to improve, but he would no longer sacrifice his health or his relationships in the process.

The next morning, he found Koneko in the garden, training alone. He approached her slowly, his heart lighter than it had been in days.

> "Koneko," he called, and she looked up at him, her golden eyes meeting his with a mixture of concern and hope.

> "I think… I think I need to change how I've been doing things," he admitted. "I've been so focused on getting stronger that I forgot what's really important."

Koneko's expression softened, and she nodded.

> "I'm glad you understand."

Together, they continued their training, but this time, it was different. Ahmed didn't push himself past his limits. Instead, he focused on honing his skills with precision and care, learning from Koneko and allowing her to help him when needed.

As the days passed, his strength grew not just through sheer willpower, but through discipline, patience, and understanding. He knew now that true power wasn't just about physical might—it was about the balance between mind, body, and heart.

And with Koneko by his side, he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
