The machine was quiet now, the humming replaced by that eerie, close-to-deafening silence. I stood at the control panel, my fingers trembling as I input the last sequence.
It was done.
I turned towards Marcus; he was pale and his eyes had widened in a shock. He whispered, "What have you done?".
I didn't answer. I couldn't. Because in that moment, I wasn't sure if I'd just saved the world-or destroyed it.

We were halfway to the safe house when the ground shook. Not like before, when the room had vibrated with the machine's hum. No, this was different. This was… deeper. More primal.
I stopped, my heart racing. "What the hell was that?
Jace didn't say anything. He just kept staring at the horizon.
