Skylar
My phone buzzed on the counter, its vibration slicing through the uncomfortable silence of the room. I leaned against the table, the note from the package still fisted in my hand, the edges crumpled from the force of my grip. It felt like a noose constricting around my throat. The twins were upstairs, clueless, giggling over some video they'd been watching. I envied their innocence.
"You've won nothing. The council never forgets."
The words dripped in my mind like poison. I had thought putting my uncle away would buy us some peace. Foolish, I know. Peace was never in the cards for me. Not with the life I have lived and the enemies I have made.
I reached for my phone and dialed Julian. He answered on the second ring.
"Sky?" His voice was sharp, alert. "What's wrong?"
I didn't waste time on pleasantries. "We've got a problem. Can you get here? Bring Jasper."
"Is everyone okay? Are the twins-"
"They're fine. Just. hurry."
