The air was thick with tension as we crouched behind the steel door leading to the council chamber. My heart hammered against my ribs, each beat a reminder of just how high the stakes were. Julian's hand rested on my shoulder, a silent reassurance, while Jasper knelt by the control panel, rewiring to disable the alarm.
You've got two minutes, tops," Jasper muttered, his voice low but even. Sweat trickled down his temple as he worked.
"Make it one," I returned, my hand tightening on the gun. My voice came out sharper than I meant it to, but there wasn't time for apologies.
