Chapter 17 - Foundations

The simulation chamber dissolved into a soft, shimmering light, leaving Raven and Alina standing in the agency's central hall. Both assassins looked worn but triumphant, their clothes tattered and bodies aching from the grueling simulated mission.

Before either could speak, the system's familiar chime rang in Raven's mind.

"Host has reached a significant milestone in the agency's development. The Technique Store has been unlocked."

Raven's monocle flickered to life, displaying a new interface with intricate menus. He instinctively activated it, scrolling through options as Alina watched him curiously.

"What now?" she asked, wiping sweat from her brow.

Raven smirked. "Looks like the system just got a lot more interesting. I have a choice to make."

The Technique Store Unlocked

The system's voice echoed in his mind.

"As host, you may select one initial technique to seed the store. Categories available: Attack, Defense, Footwork. This technique will define the agency's foundational style and serve as the first offering for its members. Choose wisely."

Raven's gaze flickered to Alina. She raised an eyebrow. "What's the deal?"

"The system's letting me choose a technique to add to the agency's store," he explained. "It's a big deal. This will set the tone for what our assassins can learn."

Alina crossed her arms, leaning against the wall. "Well, you're the boss. What are the options?"

Raven navigated the interface, bringing up detailed descriptions of the available techniques.

Starpiercer Blade (Attack): A technique that focuses on channeling qi into weapons, allowing for precise and devastating strikes.

Iron Veil (Defense): A defensive technique that enhances the body's resistance to physical and qi-based attacks, creating a temporary shield of energy.

Shadowstep (Footwork): A movement technique that allows the user to merge with shadows, enabling near-invisibility and swift repositioning in combat.

He considered each option carefully. Starpiercer Blade was tempting—lethal attacks were the hallmark of an assassin. But Iron Veil offered protection, something that could save lives in critical moments.

Shadowstep, however, caught his attention the most. Its synergy with the stealth and agility-based style he envisioned for the agency was undeniable. An assassin who could vanish into shadows would be nearly unstoppable.

"Shadowstep," Raven said finally. "We're assassins, not warriors. Footwork comes first."

As soon as he made his choice, a brilliant blue light flashed in the center of the hall. A small, sleek pedestal materialized, glowing with ethereal energy. On its surface, a shimmering holographic book titled Shadowstep: Mastery of Darkness appeared.

"Technique Store established," the system announced. "Agents may now purchase techniques using their earnings. All techniques are nontransferable and tied to the user."

Alina approached the pedestal, her eyes gleaming with interest. "So, this is the big addition? Looks fancy."

Raven nodded. "It's just the beginning. As we grow, more techniques will become available. The system's turning this place into a real powerhouse."

Before Raven could bask in the new feature, the system chimed again.

"Introducing the Salary System: Agents will now receive regular compensation based on mission performance, contributions, and rank. Earnings can be used for purchasing techniques, personal amenities, and other agency-provided specialties."

Raven frowned. "Salary system? That's... unexpected."

Alina smirked. "You sound like you're not ready to start paying your people."

"It's not that," Raven said, rubbing his temple. "I didn't think the system would turn this into a business."

"Clarification: Salaries ensure agency sustainability and incentivize agent growth. Financial management features will be integrated soon."

Alina chuckled. "Guess you're not just a boss anymore. You're a manager too."

Curious, Raven delved deeper into the system's interface. The Salary System menu revealed various tiers, ranging from entry-level trainees to elite operatives. The monetary unit was tied to the system's unique currency, Moonlit Coins.

He noticed a breakdown:

Base Salary: All agents receive a minimum number of coins per month.

Mission Rewards: Additional earnings based on mission difficulty and success.

Bonuses: Special incentives for extraordinary performance.

"Well," Raven said, glancing at Alina, "it looks like you'll be earning your keep now."

Alina grinned. "Does that mean I get to charge you for every time I save your ass?"

"Don't push it," he replied, though he couldn't suppress a smirk.

While Alina continued to examine the pedestal, Raven opened the Shadowstep manual through the system interface. The text was a mix of diagrams and instructions, detailing the technique's stages.

"Want to give it a try?" he asked Alina.

She tilted her head. "You're offering me first dibs?"

"You've earned it," he said. "Besides, I'll need someone to test this out before the other agents get access."

Alina didn't hesitate. She placed her hand on the pedestal, and a surge of energy flowed into her. The system chimed:

"Shadowstep technique purchased. Initiating synchronization."

Her body tensed as the energy integrated with her qi. Moments later, she opened her eyes, a spark of exhilaration in her gaze.

"This... feels incredible," she said, her voice almost breathless.

"Show me," Raven said, stepping back.

Alina closed her eyes, focusing. Her form shimmered, and within seconds, she vanished into the shadows. A moment later, she reappeared behind Raven, her dagger lightly pressed against his back.

"Not bad," he said, turning to face her.

"Not bad?" she echoed, smirking. "You're just mad I'm better at this than you'll ever be."

With the technique store and salary system in place, the agency was evolving rapidly. Raven felt a mix of excitement and responsibility. The system's features were pushing them toward something greater, but it also meant the stakes were rising.

He glanced at Alina, who was still experimenting with her new technique.

"Ready for the next challenge?" he asked.

She twirled her dagger, a confident grin on her face. "Always."
