Chapter 15 - Chapter 5 Flames of Resistance

Chapter 5: Flames of Resistance

The Zerynthians march forward in perfect formation, their soldiers clad in bronze and armed with weapons that outshine anything the villagers have seen. Drums beat steadily, their rhythm echoing across the fields and into the hearts of Hi no Kuni's defenders. On the walls, Yuuto watches intently, scanning for weaknesses in the enemy's approach.

The villagers, though visibly nervous, hold their positions, inspired by Yuuto's confidence and the training Kael has instilled in them. Garan's warriors stand at the front lines, their iron weapons gleaming, ready to meet the enemy head-on.

Yuuto signals to the archers in the watchtowers, who let loose the first volley of arrows. Many find their marks, but the Zerynthians raise their shields, creating an impenetrable wall as they advance. The defenders brace themselves as the first wave of enemies reaches the outer barriers.

The Zerynthians crash into the fortifications, hacking at the wooden spikes and attempting to push through. Yuuto orders the defenders to release the traps—hidden pits and collapsing walls catch the enemy off guard, thinning their numbers. For a moment, the defenders cheer, but the Zerynthians regroup, their discipline unwavering.

As the battle intensifies, Yuuto descends from the watchtower and joins the front lines. His sword, imbued with his divine fire, cuts through the enemy ranks with ease. Flames trail behind each swing, igniting panic among the Zerynthians. The sight of their leader fighting alongside them energizes the defenders, and they push back with renewed vigor.

Kael leads a group of spear-wielding villagers in a flanking maneuver, targeting the Zerynthian archers. Meanwhile, Garan's warriors clash fiercely with the enemy infantry, their iron weapons proving effective against the bronze armor.

Despite the initial successes, the Zerynthians bring forward a battering ram, aiming to breach the main gate. Yuuto realizes they must act quickly or risk losing their defensive position. He calls for Garan and Kael, devising a desperate plan.

Under the cover of night, Yuuto sneaks out with a small team to set the battering ram ablaze. Using his divine fire, he creates a distraction, drawing the enemy's attention while Garan's warriors ambush from the side. The battering ram is destroyed, but the maneuver costs the defenders dearly, with many injured or killed in the skirmish.

As dawn breaks, the Zerynthians retreat to regroup, giving the defenders a brief reprieve. Yuuto collapses against the wall, exhausted but determined. The village has held, but he knows this is only the beginning.

The chapter ends with Yuuto staring at the horizon, where the Zerynthian general, mounted on a warhorse, watches the battlefield with cold calculation. Yuuto senses the enemy's resolve and steels himself for the battles yet to come.
