Chapter 17: Breaking the First Trap
---
The oppressive silence of the ruins was shattered by the sound of stone grinding against stone. Adam's heart raced as he turned toward the massive door, the one that had been blocking their path for what felt like an eternity. Something was wrong. The stranger, the mysterious man with golden eyes, had left them with more questions than answers. Adam's mind buzzed with the implications of their encounter.
"Watch out!" Sienna's warning cut through his thoughts as the ground beneath them began to shift.
Before Adam could react, the ground beneath them cracked open, revealing a yawning chasm that seemed to lead to nowhere. They barely managed to jump back in time as jagged spikes shot up from the floor, narrowly avoiding impalement.
"What the hell was that?" Jarek shouted, his voice a mix of fear and anger.
"It's a trap," Adam said, scanning the room. The edges of the walls were lined with strange markings, runes that seemed to glow faintly as the trap was triggered. "We've been set up."
The realization hit him like a ton of bricks. The door wasn't just an obstacle—it was part of a much larger scheme. The ruins were a labyrinth, filled with traps and puzzles designed to test the strength of any player who dared to venture inside. The Organization had set this up, a dangerous challenge that would take everything they had to survive.
"I don't think this is just a trap meant for us," Adam murmured. "This is a message."
Sienna, ever the strategist, quickly began to assess their options. "We can't just rush in blind. We need to figure out how to disable these traps before we can move forward."
Adam nodded, his eyes scanning the room for any clues that might give them an edge. His thoughts raced, and then it hit him—the strange markings on the walls. They were familiar. Simulation, the ability he had recently unlocked, had granted him insight into the world's true structure. If he could figure out the patterns of these traps, perhaps he could disable them, or at least neutralize the most dangerous ones.
"Hold on," Adam said, raising his hand. "I need to focus."
He closed his eyes, the world around him fading as he activated his Simulation ability. In his mind, the patterns of the traps began to form, each rune illuminating in a sequence that only he could see. He could feel the energy of the world around him shifting, as if it were trying to resist his influence, but Adam pushed forward. The knowledge was overwhelming, but the more he focused, the clearer the patterns became.
The traps were connected to a central mechanism hidden deep within the ruins, a mechanism that controlled the flow of energy through the room. If he could disrupt that flow, the traps would deactivate, and they could move on. But there was a problem. The mechanism was protected by a series of obstacles—layers of magical wards and physical barriers that would require a great deal of concentration to breach.
"I need time," Adam said, opening his eyes. "Cover me."
Sienna and Jarek immediately moved to position themselves, ready to fight off any enemies that might appear. Adam could hear their soft murmurs of preparation as he focused again, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out with his mind.
With a deep breath, Adam began to unravel the magic that held the traps in place. The runes on the walls seemed to pulse in response, their glow intensifying as if sensing the disturbance. The tension in the air was palpable, as if the entire room was holding its breath.
Suddenly, there was a deafening crack as the floor beneath them shifted once more. Adam's concentration faltered, and the traps began to reactivate, faster and deadlier than before. The walls closed in around them, forcing them into a smaller space.
"Adam!" Sienna shouted. "Hurry up!"
With his pulse racing, Adam pushed forward, his fingers moving in the air as if guiding invisible threads. The mechanism was close—he could feel it now, just within reach. But the traps weren't going to give him much time.
The spikes began to rise again, this time much faster. Adam's mind raced, trying to anticipate each movement, each trap that might spring. But just as the first set of spikes shot toward him, he locked onto the core of the mechanism and twisted. A pulse of energy surged through the room, and for a split second, everything went still.
Then the traps began to retract, their deadly spikes sinking back into the floor with a soft, metallic hiss. The walls stopped closing in, and the room returned to its original state, save for the low hum of the magical energy that had been disturbed.
"Is it done?" Jarek asked, his voice tense but hopeful.
Adam exhaled deeply, sweat dripping from his brow. "For now. But we're not out of the woods yet. We still need to figure out what's on the other side of that door."
Sienna approached the massive stone door, examining the runes etched into its surface. "This isn't just a door. It's a lock. Whatever's inside, it's meant to be kept hidden."
Adam felt a chill run down his spine. He had a bad feeling about this. The more he thought about the traps and the strange messages, the more he realized that this was no ordinary mission. This was part of a larger plan, a puzzle that was slowly revealing itself.
"We'll need to be careful," Adam warned. "I think we've just scratched the surface. Whatever's behind that door is probably more dangerous than anything we've faced so far."
As they stood in front of the door, Adam couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The Organization had to be involved in this somehow—there was no way this was all just a coincidence. His thoughts were interrupted as the door began to rumble, slowly grinding open on its own.
"Get ready," Adam whispered.
The door opened with a groan, revealing a darkened chamber beyond. The faint outline of something large and ominous stood in the center of the room. As Adam's eyes adjusted to the darkness, he saw it—a massive stone pedestal, and atop it, a glowing artifact, radiating an energy so intense that it almost felt tangible.
"That's it," Sienna said, her voice filled with awe.
Adam stepped forward, but as he did, the floor beneath them began to tremble again. This time, it wasn't a trap—it was something far worse. From the shadows, a group of figures emerged, their silhouettes barely visible in the dim light.
Adam's hand instinctively moved to his weapon, his senses heightened. He wasn't sure who these new players were, but he knew one thing for certain: they were here for the artifact, and they would stop at nothing to get it.
And Adam, with his growing power and his Steal ability, wasn't going to let anyone take it from him.
