Chapter 28 - The Signal Beneath

The aftermath of the battle lingered like a heavy weight in the air. Smoke curled from the wreckage, and faint echoes of distant alien cries drifted through the jungle. Scarface leaned heavily against his mech, his breathing labored but steady. Wolfe and Vega stood nearby, their weapons still drawn, scanning the horizon for signs of movement.

Techie sat at the base of his mecha, BIO linked to the salvaged alien data core from one of the hunter mechas. Streams of alien text and glyphs illuminated his visor as he worked.

Captain approached him, her rifle slung but ready. "What do you have, Techie?"

Techie adjusted the feed. "It's a lot of fragmented data—logs, targeting protocols—but there's something deeper. I've isolated a secondary signal embedded in the encryption. Coordinates."

"Coordinates?" Scarface's gravelly voice came through, his interest piqued.

Techie nodded, his hands moving quickly over the holographic interface. "It points to a location a few clicks north of here. There's a structure—underground, from what I can tell. It's old, predating even the hunters' tech. This could be... big."

Ace, who had been listening silently, stepped forward. "Big how? Supplies, weapons, intel?"

"Maybe all of the above," Techie replied, his tone cautious. "But it's not just the structure. There's another signal—a warning. Something about containment breaches and biohazards."

Shadow folded her arms, her eyes narrowed. "So, we're walking into a potential trap?"

"Possibly," Techie admitted. "But if there's a chance to find something that can give us an edge, we have to check it out."

Captain considered this, her gaze sweeping over the group. "We move. Gear up and stay sharp. If this is a trap, we'll spring it on our terms."

Into the Jungle

The trek through the jungle was tense and methodical. The dense foliage and uneven terrain made progress slow, but the mechas moved steadily, their enhanced mobility compensating for the rough environment.

Ace took point, his HUD scanning for anomalies. "Anything on your end, Techie?"

"Energy signatures are getting stronger," Techie replied. "Looks like automated defenses—turrets or drones. Nothing active yet, but we should assume the worst."

Wolfe grinned faintly. "Sounds like a warm welcome."

Shadow gave him a sidelong glance. "Let's make sure we're the ones doing the greeting."

After an hour of cautious movement, the group reached a clearing. At its center stood a low, angular structure, half-buried under years of overgrowth. The faint glow of alien turrets flanked its perimeter, their sleek designs ominous against the jungle backdrop.

"Four turrets," Captain observed, her gaze sharp. "Scarface, Wolfe, you draw their fire. Shadow, Vega, take the flanks and disable them. Ace and Techie, you're with me. We breach once the defenses are down."

Scarface chuckled. "Guess we're the bait again, Wolfe."

Wolfe smirked. "Wouldn't have it any other way."

The Assault

Scarface and Wolfe charged forward, their mechas taking the brunt of the turrets' fire. Explosions lit up the clearing as the turrets unleashed their payloads, but the two mechas held firm, their armor absorbing the impacts.

Shadow and Vega moved swiftly along the edges of the clearing, their precision shots taking out key components of the turrets.

"Turrets down," Shadow reported after a few tense moments.

"Move in!" Captain ordered.

Ace and Techie followed her as she led the charge into the structure. The interior was dimly lit, the air heavy with the scent of damp metal and decay. They moved cautiously through the corridors, their weapons raised.

Techie paused at a sealed door. "This is it. The source of the signal is directly below us."

"Can you get it open?" Captain asked.

"Give me a sec." Techie's hands flew over the controls, and after a moment, the door slid open with a hiss, revealing a small elevator.

"Everybody in," Captain ordered.

The Hidden Arsenal

The elevator descended in silence, the group crammed tightly together. As they went deeper, the walls transitioned from steel to a clear, glass-like material. Beyond the glass, the faint outlines of massive machinery became visible.

When the doors finally opened, the group stepped into a vast underground hangar. The space was lined with rows of sleek, alien mechas. Their designs were streamlined and futuristic, their surfaces shimmering with an otherworldly material that shifted colors under the light. Each one seemed customized, bearing unique insignias and configurations.

"These aren't just mechas," Techie said, his voice filled with awe. "This is advanced tech—beyond anything we've seen."

Scarface approached one of the machines, running his hand over its surface. "Feels like... living metal."

Ace studied the rows of mechas. "If we can get these operational, we'll be unstoppable."

"Don't get ahead of yourself," Shadow said. "We don't know what's guarding this place."

As if on cue, a deep, resonating growl echoed through the hangar.

The group froze, their weapons raised. From the shadows, alien cyborgs emerged—creatures with sleek, metallic bodies and glowing red eyes.

"Looks like we're not alone," Captain said grimly. "Form up. Let's take them out."

The Battle

The fight was chaotic and brutal. The cyborgs moved with inhuman speed, their claws tearing through metal and flesh alike. The group fought as a unit, their mechas clashing against the alien machines in a flurry of explosions and gunfire.

Scarface roared as he tore through a cyborg with his mecha's blade. Wolfe and Vega flanked another, their coordinated attacks overwhelming the enemy.

Techie worked furiously to activate one of the alien mechas, his fingers flying over the controls. "Keep them off me!" he shouted.

Ace and Captain held the line, their weapons cutting down wave after wave of cyborgs.

Finally, with a loud hum, the alien mecha Techie had been working on came to life. Its eyes glowed brightly as it powered up, its systems aligning with Techie's controls.

"Got it!" Techie yelled, joining the fight with his newly acquired weapon.

The tide turned quickly after that. The group, now armed with superior technology, pushed back the cyborgs, clearing the hangar.

As the last cyborg fell, Captain surveyed the battlefield, her face grim but determined. "We've got what we came for. Let's regroup and figure out our next move."

But as the group caught their breath, a low rumble echoed through the hangar, and a massive door at the far end began to open.

"Something's coming," Ace muttered, his grip tightening on his controls.

The group readied themselves, their weapons aimed at the looming darkness. Whatever lay beyond that door, they knew it would be their biggest challenge yet.
