Chapter 135 - Passing on the torch

KELLY THOMPSON'S POV

Back to the royal palace with my husband the Alpha King Jason, we reunited with our eleven-year-old son Eden who was eagerly waiting to hear about the battle. His eyes sparkled with curiosity, the remnants of childhood innocence still shining through the weight of our world's challenges.

"Mom! Dad! Did you win?" Eden asked, bouncing on his toes as we stepped through the doors. The warmth of our home enveloped us, a stark contrast to the chaos we had just left behind.

I knelt down to meet his gaze, feeling the exhaustion from the battle seep into my bones. "Yes, sweetheart, we won. But it wasn't easy," I replied, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "The Black Faes are cunning and will return, but we stood strong together."

His face fell slightly, the reality of our ongoing struggle sinking in. "Will they come back soon?" he asked, the worry evident in his voice.

I hesitated, glancing at Jason, who stood behind me with a knowing expression. "They may. But we are prepared. Our packs are united, and we will be ready for whatever they throw at us next."

Eden nodded, his determination returning. "I want to help! I want to train more," he declared, his youthful spirit igniting once again.

Jason chuckled, ruffling Eden's hair. "You're already a fierce warrior, buddy. But remember, being part of a pack isn't just about fighting. It's about supporting each other and finding strength in unity."

"Yeah!" Eden exclaimed, enthusiasm bubbling over. "I'll help with gathering information and patrolling! I want to be just like you both!"

I exchanged a glance with Jason, pride swelling within me. "You already are, Eden. You have the heart of a true leader," I said, my voice full of warmth. "But for now, let's celebrate our victory and allow everyone to rest."

As we made our way through the palace, I could feel the energy shifting. The previous tension was slowly dissipating, replaced by a sense of relief and camaraderie. The sounds of laughter echoed through the halls, and I could see warriors recounting their experiences, sharing tales of bravery and resilience.

We gathered in the great hall, the grand space adorned with banners representing each pack, their colors vibrant against the stone walls. A feast was laid out before us, the rich aromas wafting through the air and teasing our senses.

"Let's eat!" I announced, and the room erupted into cheers as everyone took their seats at the long wooden table. The atmosphere was alive with conversation, the sense of community palpable as we shared stories and laughter.

As we feasted, Jason stood to raise a glass. "To our Luna Queen Kelly, who fought with bravery and strength! To our unity, and to the bonds that hold us together!"

Everyone raised their glasses in agreement, echoing his sentiments, and I felt a rush of gratitude wash over me. This was what we had fought for—the strength of our alliance, the bonds of family, and the hope for a brighter future.

Eden leaned over to me, his eyes wide with excitement. "Can I tell a story too?" he asked, bouncing slightly in his seat.

"Of course," I replied, my heart swelling with pride. "What story do you want to share?"

Eden cleared his throat dramatically, and the hall fell silent, eager to hear his words. "Once upon a time, there was a brave wolf who fought against the darkness. He was small but fierce, and he had two powerful parents who taught him how to be strong!"

Laughter erupted around the table as he spun his tale, embellishing it with wild gestures and exaggerated expressions. I couldn't help but smile, feeling the warmth of love and laughter envelop me.

As the evening wore on, I felt a sense of peace settle within me. We had faced the darkness together, and now we celebrated the light that had emerged from our struggle. But even as I reveled in the moment, I couldn't shake the feeling that the shadows were still lurking, waiting for their next opportunity.

After the feast, as the celebrations continued, I stole away to the balcony, seeking a moment of solitude. The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silvery glow over the land. I leaned against the railing, taking a deep breath of the crisp night air.

But my moment of peace was interrupted when I sensed a presence behind me. "You're deep in thought," Jason said, stepping out onto the balcony, his expression contemplative.

I turned to him, my heart swelling at the sight of him. "I can't help but think about what comes next," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. "The Black Faes may have retreated, but we know they won't give up easily."

He stepped closer, his hand finding mine as he leaned against the railing beside me. "We'll face whatever they throw at us together, Kelly. You've built something incredible here. The strength of our packs is undeniable."

I smiled, feeling the warmth of his words wash over me. "But what if it's not enough? What if they come back stronger?"

Jason turned to me, his blue eyes steady and unwavering. "We will be stronger. We've already proven that. Our unity is our greatest weapon, and we'll continue to strengthen it."

I nodded, feeling the weight of his words. Together, we would face whatever challenges lay ahead. The darkness may lurk just beyond the horizon, but as long as we stood united, I knew we would prevail.

Suddenly, our son Eden came out to

join us on the balcony, his youthful energy spilling into the quiet of the night. "Mom! Dad! Can I help with the patrols tonight? I want to keep watch for any bad guys!" His enthusiasm was infectious, and it warmed my heart to see him so eager to contribute.

I exchanged a glance with Jason, whose expression softened as he knelt down to meet Eden's gaze. "It's brave of you to want to help, buddy. But tonight, you need to rest after all the excitement. There will be plenty of time for patrolling in the days to come."

Eden's face fell slightly, disappointment flickering in his eyes, but I could see the understanding settle in as he took a deep breath. "Okay, I'll help with the next patrol then," he said, determination creeping back into his voice.

"Absolutely," I said, ruffling his hair affectionately. "You're going to be an incredible guardian one day."

As Eden bounced back inside, I turned my attention back to Jason, feeling the weight of leadership settle on my shoulders once more. "We need to ensure he feels included in all of this, even if it means keeping him safe," I said, my voice filled with concern. "The last thing I want is for him to feel powerless."

Jason nodded, his expression serious. "We'll involve him in the preparations and training. He may be young, but he's already shown great potential. We can teach him ways to contribute without putting him in harm's way."

I felt a swell of gratitude for Jason's unwavering support. Together, we would raise Eden to be strong and capable, ready to face whatever darkness awaited us.

Things weren't surely going to be easy but Jason and I were determined to do whatever was necessary for our son's bright future.

As the days turned into weeks, we focused on not just preparing for the inevitable return of the Black Faes but also on nurturing Eden's growth within our ranks. Jason and I made it a point to involve him in all aspects of our preparations, allowing him to shadow our training sessions and learn the intricacies of leadership and battle strategy.

One crisp morning, while the sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the training grounds, I watched as Jason led a group of warriors in combat drills. Eden was right there with them, his small frame moving with surprising agility as he practiced his footwork, mimicking the movements of the older warriors.

I felt a swell of pride as I observed the camaraderie that had formed among the warriors and our son. They treated him as one of their own, guiding him through each drill, encouraging him with laughs and cheers. It was heartening to see the bond between them grow, reinforcing the very unity that would be crucial in our fight against the darkness.

"Keep your guard up, Eden!" Jason called out, his voice booming across the training field. "Remember, it's not just about strength; it's about strategy! Anticipate your opponent's moves!"

Eden nodded, determination etched on his face. "I will, Dad!" he shouted back, his youthful enthusiasm infectious.

As the training session continued, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Despite the lurking threat of the Black Faes, within our walls, we were building something solid and enduring—community, trust, and strength.

Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the stars began to twinkle in the deepening sky, I gathered my family in our private quarters. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the tension that often filled my days.

"Alright, Eden," I said, smiling down at him as he settled onto the floor with his favorite book. "Tonight's the night we pick up where we left off in your training. Are you ready?"

Eden's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Yes! I want to learn how to defend our territory and protect our pack!"

Jason chuckled, a soft smile on his lips. "You're already doing that, buddy. Every time you train, you're making us all stronger. But tonight, we'll focus on magic as well as combat. It's important to understand the balance between the two."

"Magic?" Eden asked, his face lighting up with curiosity. "Can I really learn how to use it?"

I nodded, kneeling beside him. "You can. We'll teach you the basics, but you have to remember that magic is not just a tool; it's a responsibility. It must be used wisely."

Jason joined us, his presence a reassuring force. "And it's a connection to our history, our power. The moon goddess has blessed us with this gift, and we must honor it."

Eden listened intently, his youthful enthusiasm tempered by the weight of our words. "I promise I'll be responsible," he vowed, determination shining in his eyes.

"Alright," I said, feeling a sense of pride swell within me. "Let's begin."

We spent the evening teaching Eden simple spells and techniques, guiding him as he discovered the potential within himself. Laughter filled the room, and the bond between us deepened with each shared experience.

But even as we celebrated these small victories, I couldn't shake the feeling that the looming threat of the Black Faes was still out there, waiting for the right moment to strike. The unease that had settled in my gut refused to dissipate, like a shadow that lingered just out of sight.

In the days that followed, we continued to train, but I also knew we needed to gather intelligence on the Black Faes' movements. They were cunning, and I was determined to outsmart them.

One evening, I called a meeting with my most trusted advisors—Jason, Lunara, and Stellan. The atmosphere in the war room was tense but focused as we discussed our next steps.

"The Black Faes are likely regrouping," I began, my voice steady as I laid out our concerns. "We need to send scouts to monitor their movements and gather any information we can."

Stellan nodded, his brow furrowed. "I can lead a small team into their territory. We'll set up surveillance and report back with any findings."

"I'll accompany you," Jason said, his expression serious. "We need to ensure that we're prepared for whatever they're planning."

Lunara interjected, "And I can enhance our wards to protect our borders while you're away. We need to ensure that no one slips through unnoticed."

As we finalized our plans, I felt a sense of urgency coursing through me. The Black Faes were a persistent threat, and we needed to stay one step ahead.

The next morning, as dawn broke, I watched as Jason and Stellan prepared to leave with their scouting team. My heart raced as I felt the weight of our responsibilities bearing down on me once more.

"Be careful," I called out, my voice steady despite the anxiety churning within me. "Stay vigilant and return safely."

Jason turned back to me, his expression fierce and determined. "We will. Trust in our strength, Kelly. We're united."

As they departed, I felt a mix of pride and worry. They were brave warriors, but the darkness had a way of creeping in when you least expected it.

In the days that followed, I continued to train with Eden, keeping him engaged and focused. He was a quick learner, absorbing everything we taught him with an eagerness that left me in awe. Watching him grow stronger filled me with hope for the future.
