Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

CLAIRE

"I'm sorry, Mrs Scott, but there is not much I can do for you." Mr Dalton told me, his face lowered so I could only get to see his eyes from the brim of his glasses.

Mr Dalton was a nice man, for the five years I had worked with him, he was a good man. I knew that he really couldn't do much for me at this point.

But there had to be something.

I swallowed hard for the umpteenth time to get rid of the lump in my throat, but there was no saliva left to help push down the lump. My throat felt dry like a pipeline that hadn't gotten any supply of water for a long time.

"Please, Mr Dalton, I didn't do any of the things I am being accused of, I swear to you, I've worked here for five years and you know me better than that."

"I'm sorry, Claire, but at this point, it doesn't matter what I believe, what matters is that your recent scandal is going to drag the reputation of the school through the mud, and that's not what we want at the moment. We have to lay you off."

The word hit my ear like a bombshell and landed in the pit of my stomach like a volcanic eruption, like I had not heard it like twice today and read it from the email that had been sent to me earlier.

I was about to lose my job because of a scandal that had spread around town about me having an affair with a married top government official which wasn't true. Now I was being laid off at work.

I held onto the side of the table till my knuckles turned white. And not for the first time, I took note of the glistening diamond in my ring finger, the same ring Jason had put in my fingers in front of the aisle three years ago.

My job was not the only thing threatened by this scandal, my marriage was on the line too.

"Mr Dalton," my tired voice called softly, but he only got to look at me through the space atop his glasses and let out a low grunt.

"Please, Claire, your presence here could pose more harm to the reputation of the school. You wouldn't want me calling the security to escort you out."

The tears I had been trying to control all the while in Mr Dalton's office took the clue as soon as I was in my car and burst out all at once.

I broke down in tears as I began to recount how perfect my life had been before the unfortunate event which was about to ruin my life.

I had just come home from grocery shopping when the news popped up on social media, someone had photoshopped my face into some pictures and had spread them all over the internet.

Then there was the email from the school. Then, Jason returned from the office and refused to believe me. We had a big fight after that, and now I was being laid off at work. Everything happened so fast that I found it severely difficult to keep up with the pace with which my life was getting ruined.

With a heavy heart, I turned the key in the ignition and began the painful drive home. Home, which suddenly felt like hell now.

That must have been the longest and the most traumatic thirty minutes drive in my life.

What would have been a feeling of excitement to see my husband after a long day at work felt more dread, dread of coming face to face with my husband who hated me now.

I didn't know if it was all the crying since the scandal leaked, but my head hurt like crazy, my vision seemed to get more blurry with each passing moment and the feeling of nausea seemed to be getting worse.

Things were not going well, my life was literally falling apart right in front of me and I knew these symptoms should be the least of my worries now, but I needed to have it checked. I didn't want to add a troubling health to all of my current problems.

So, despite my challenges, I pulled up in front of the hospital.

My samples were taken, I was asked to stay in the waiting room as the nurses headed for the laboratory with my blood samples.

A couple of minutes later, I was sitting opposite a man in a white lab coat who had something that looked like a default smile on his face. You know that smile doctors always had when delivering a news? And it didn't really matter if it was a good news or a bad one.

So, now, I didn't know what to make of the doctor's smile. My eyes rested on the brown envelope he had in his hand, wishing that there was a way I could take a sneak peek into the contents of the envelope. The suspense was killing me.

"Mrs Scott," the doctor began, his eyes darted around my face as if he was trying to get used to my features.

He had probably seen the news, and was probably judging me at the moment.

"Congratulations, you are pregnant." He finished the rest of his speech before he pushed the envelope to me.

One day, so many unbearably heavy words.

My heart pumped against my rib cage with so much velocity that I thought I would develop a heart attack just from one statement.

"Huh!" My lips trembled as I slowly leaned forward. "Pregnant?" I stuttered.

This should have been good news, I should be happy. But I wasn't since this didn't seem to be the right time. Jason had said something about a divorce when we had a fight the previous night.

But maybe he didn't mean it, he must have said that out of anger and was going to reconsider his words.

Maybe when he found out I was pregnant, maybe he was going to take that back. And we would resolve this.

I held onto that as I reached out with shaky hands and took the brown envelope.

And maybe that was why I didn't expect it when I got home to find Jason in the sitting room with a piece of paper and a pen.

He didn't ask why I was late coming home like he normally would.

His eyes were dark as he raised them to look at me.

"Sign the papers and let's get this over with." He said nonchalantly, his malicious voice laced with spite, then he pushed the paper towards me.
