The darkness was suffocating. The ground crumbled beneath their feet, and Kael felt himself plummeting through the void. The hum of the Monolith reverberated all around him, a deafening pulse that seemed to tear at his very core.
"Kael!" Elira's voice was faint, lost in the roar of rushing air and collapsing stone.
Kael's shadow flared instinctively, wrapping around him like a cocoon to soften the impact as he hit the ground with a bone-jarring thud. Dust and shards of debris rained down around him, the echo of their descent fading into the vast chamber.
He groaned, his body aching as he pushed himself to his knees. The air here was dense and heavy, thick with the oppressive energy of the Monolith. The faint glow of corrupted veins snaked through the jagged walls, casting an eerie crimson light across the cavern.
"Elira? Torran?" Kael called out, his voice hoarse.
A faint groan answered from somewhere to his right. Kael staggered to his feet, his shadow flickering weakly as he moved toward the sound. He found Elira lying against a pile of rubble, her bow clutched tightly in her hand.
"Elira, are you okay?" he asked, kneeling beside her.
She coughed, waving away the dust. "I've been better," she muttered, sitting up. "What happened? Where's Torran?"
Before Kael could answer, a deep growl echoed from the darkness. The shadows shifted unnaturally, and a pair of glowing red eyes emerged from the gloom.
"Stay back," Kael said, his shadow coiling protectively as he stepped in front of Elira.
The creature lunged—a twisted amalgamation of bone and shadow, its form pulsating with corrupted energy. Kael's shadow lashed out instinctively, striking the creature mid-air and sending it crashing into the rocks.
"More are coming," Elira said, her voice tense as she readied her bow.
The sound of clashing steel echoed from deeper in the cavern, followed by Torran's unmistakable shout. "Over here!"
Kael and Elira exchanged a glance before sprinting toward the sound, their shadows shifting and flickering as the oppressive energy of the cavern seemed to pull at them.
They found Torran standing in a small clearing, his shield raised as he fended off a trio of corrupted beasts. His sword glowed faintly as he swung in a wide arc, slicing through one of the creatures.
"Took you long enough," Torran grunted, stepping back as another beast lunged at him.
Kael didn't hesitate. He raised his hand, his shadow forming a lance that streaked toward the beast. The attack struck true, impaling the creature and dissipating it in a burst of blackened energy.
Elira loosed an arrow that struck the final beast in the chest, pinning it against the wall. It let out a distorted screech before collapsing into a heap of smoldering bone.
Torran lowered his shield, breathing heavily as he surveyed the cavern. "Nice of you to join me."
"We got lucky," Kael said, his shadow flickering at his feet. "If we'd landed farther apart..."
"Save it," Torran said, cutting him off. "We're alive. Let's figure out where we are before that changes."
Elira glanced around, her sharp eyes scanning the glowing walls and jagged terrain. "This isn't just deeper into the dungeon. It's... something else. Look at the veins in the rock—they're pulsing in sync with the Monolith."
Kael nodded, the pull in his chest now almost overwhelming. "It's close. I can feel it."
Torran frowned, gripping his sword tightly. "Then we don't have much time. If the corruption's this strong, the Monolith isn't going to wait for us to come knocking."
The trio pressed onward, the cavern's oppressive atmosphere growing heavier with each step. The distant hum of the Monolith had become a deafening pulse, each beat resonating through the ground beneath their feet.
Kael's shadow writhed uncontrollably, and he clenched his fists, forcing it back under his control. Elira and Torran exchanged uneasy glances, but neither said anything.
As they moved deeper, the faint whispers of the Monolith returned, tugging at the edges of Kael's mind. "You are close, Edgeweaver. Closer than ever before."
Kael didn't respond, but the weight of the words settled heavily on him. He knew this descent was only the beginning.
The cavern narrowed into a tunnel, its jagged walls glowing faintly with pulsating crimson veins. The air grew colder, and the hum of the Monolith resonated louder, a rhythmic thrum that felt like it was burrowing into their bones.
Kael led the way, the shard in his pack pulsing in sync with the veins on the walls. Each step felt heavier, the oppressive energy pulling at his shadow, which writhed and flickered beneath him.
The tunnel opened into a vast chamber that stopped the group in their tracks. The Hall of Reflections was unlike anything they'd seen before. The walls and floor were covered in polished, black stone that mirrored their forms with eerie precision. Tall, jagged pillars rose from the ground, each etched with glowing runes that shifted and shimmered like liquid light.
"What is this place?" Elira asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She approached one of the mirrored walls cautiously, her reflection staring back at her with unsettling clarity.
Torran's gaze shifted warily to the runes on the pillars. "It's not just for show. This place has a purpose."
Kael felt the pull of the shard intensify, the energy coursing through the room syncing with the rhythm of his shadow. His reflection on the mirrored floor twisted unnaturally, its form flickering between his own and something darker—his shadow writhed as if alive.
Before anyone could speak, the runes on the pillars flared brightly, and the room filled with an otherworldly hum. The reflections on the walls shifted, no longer mirroring the group but instead showing fractured, distorted images of places and people.
One reflection showed a vast network of glowing Nodes, their energy flowing freely, untainted by corruption. Another showed the Monolith, pristine and towering, its tendrils of energy extending across the System in perfect harmony.
Elira stepped closer to the image of the Monolith. "This is the System... how it was supposed to be."
The reflections shifted again, showing the Nodes darkening and collapsing as tendrils of corruption spread like a plague. The Monolith in the image pulsed erratically, its tendrils snapping and recoiling as the corruption overwhelmed it.
Kael's shadow flickered violently, and he staggered, clutching his head as another image appeared—a fractured vision of himself, standing at the center of a Node, his shadow consuming the light around it.
"This isn't just a history lesson," Kael muttered, his voice strained. "It's showing us something else. Something broken."
Elira pointed to a new reflection, her face pale. "Look at this."
The mirrored wall displayed the Monolith's tendrils stretching toward Kael, their energy connecting to him like a web. The reflection flickered, and Kael's form shifted, becoming twisted and corrupted. His shadow grew larger, darker, until it engulfed everything around him.
"That's not me," Kael said, his voice trembling.
The runes on the pillars flared again, and a deep, resonant voice filled the chamber. "The Edgeweaver is both conduit and catalyst. The System's salvation... or its destruction."
Torran's hand tightened around the hilt of his sword. "That's a hell of a choice."
Kael stepped forward, his shadow stretching toward the mirrored wall. "The Monolith doesn't care about saving anything. It just wants control. It's twisting the System to fit its purpose."
"And what about you?" Torran asked, his tone sharp. "Are you sure you're not part of that purpose?"
Kael didn't answer. He couldn't.
The reflections shifted one final time, displaying a fragmented scene: a massive Monolith, its tendrils entwined with Kael's shadow. At its base stood countless corrupted figures, their forms twisting and writhing as they chanted in unison.
The image dissolved, and the room fell silent. The pillars dimmed, and the reflections returned to normal, showing the group's own faces once more.
Kael turned to Elira and Torran, his shadow settling uneasily beneath him. "The Monolith isn't just corrupted. It's broken. Whatever it's trying to do, we can't let it finish."
Elira nodded, her expression resolute. "Then we keep going. Whatever's waiting deeper inside, we face it together."
Torran glanced at Kael, his expression grim. "Just make sure you know where you stand, Edgeweaver. Because if it comes down to a choice between you and the System..."
Kael's jaw tightened. "I know where I stand," he said, though the flicker of doubt in his voice lingered as they pressed onward.
The corridor leading out of the Hall of Reflections was narrow and jagged, its walls alive with pulsating veins of crimson light. The oppressive hum of the Monolith grew louder with every step, vibrating through the ground like an earthquake waiting to erupt.
Kael led the way, his shadow flickering erratically at his feet. The shard in his pack pulsed in unison with the walls, its energy growing stronger as they descended deeper into the dungeon.
Elira followed close behind, her bow drawn and ready. "This feels too quiet," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the resonant thrum of the Monolith. "It's like the dungeon is holding its breath."
Torran's shield gleamed faintly in the red light as he kept a watchful eye on the path ahead. "It's not quiet—it's waiting," he muttered, his hand tightening on his sword.
The tunnel opened suddenly into a cavernous space, and the trio stopped in their tracks. The chamber was massive, its ceiling lost in shadow. At its center stood a towering construct, its form hulking and grotesque. Its body was an amalgamation of jagged stone, twisted metal, and pulsating veins of corrupted light. Two massive arms ended in sharp, claw-like appendages, and its head was a featureless mass of black metal with a single, glowing crimson eye.
The Labyrinth's Keeper.
Kael's chest tightened as the construct's eye swiveled toward them, its crimson glow intensifying. The air grew heavier, and the hum of the Monolith turned into a deafening roar.
"It knows we're here," Kael said, his voice barely above a whisper.
The Keeper stepped forward, the ground shaking with each massive stride. It raised one clawed arm, and a pulse of corrupted energy surged outward, forcing the group to scatter.
"Spread out!" Torran shouted, raising his shield as the Keeper's second arm swung toward him. The blow struck his shield with bone-jarring force, sending him skidding back across the chamber.
Elira darted to the side, her bow drawn as she loosed an arrow aimed at the Keeper's eye. The arrow struck true, but the Keeper's energy flared, and the projectile dissolved on impact.
"It's shielded!" Elira called out, her tone sharp with frustration.
Kael's shadow writhed violently, responding to the Keeper's overwhelming energy. He clenched his fists, summoning his strength. "I'll disrupt it," he said, stepping forward.
The Keeper turned its attention to him, its eye narrowing as it raised both arms. Tendrils of corrupted light lashed out, striking the ground in rapid succession and forcing Kael to dodge. His shadow coiled tightly, forming a protective barrier around him as he sprinted closer.
[Skill Activated: Shadow Lance]
Effect: Concentrated shadow energy targeting a single weak point.
Kael hurled a lance of shadow at the Keeper's chest, aiming for the faintly glowing core beneath its armor. The impact caused the Keeper to stagger, its energy shield flickering briefly.
"Torran, now!" Kael shouted.
Torran charged, his shield glowing faintly as he activated a defensive skill to absorb the Keeper's retaliatory strike. With a roar, he brought his sword down on the Keeper's core, the blade sparking as it struck the armored surface.
The Keeper reeled back, its movements jerky and disjointed as cracks began to spread across its body. Elira fired a series of arrows in rapid succession, each one striking the fissures in its armor and widening them further.
The construct let out a distorted roar, its energy surging as it lashed out wildly. One of its swings caught Torran's shield, tearing it from his grasp and sending him sprawling to the ground.
"Keep it busy!" Elira yelled, drawing another arrow.
Kael stepped forward, his shadow flaring as he launched another attack. The tendrils of darkness coiled tightly around the Keeper's core, holding it in place as Elira's arrow found its mark.
The arrow struck the exposed core, and the Keeper froze. For a moment, the chamber fell silent. Then the construct exploded in a burst of corrupted energy, sending shards of stone and metal flying in all directions.
Kael shielded his face as the debris rained down, his shadow absorbing the worst of the blast. When the dust settled, the Keeper's remains lay scattered across the chamber, its glowing core shattered.
In the center of the debris, a single shard remained, pulsating with erratic energy. It was similar to the shard Kael carried, but its light was unstable, flickering and dimming unpredictably.
Kael stepped forward, his shadow reaching toward the shard. "It's another fragment of the Monolith," he said quietly.
Elira moved beside him, her expression wary. "Careful, Kael. That thing doesn't look... safe."
As Kael reached for the shard, a cold, mocking voice echoed through the chamber.
"Every step you take brings you closer to your purpose, Edgeweaver. And to your end."
Kael froze, his hand inches from the shard, as the voice faded into silence.
