Chapter 18 - WHEN WILL IT BE PERFECT?

They had taken the matter to court, and Kaylee hated it. She hated being questioned and being the center of attention.

"Kaylee, how old are you?" the judge asked.

"16."

"Do you see Allen as your father?"

"I barely know him. I recently found out he's married to my mom."

"Then why do you choose to be with him rather than your real father?"

"My mom dropped me a note before she died. She told me to stay with Allen and to trust him. I trust my mother, and I trust who my mother trusted."

"Are you aware that this decision you're trying to make would take a long time to annul?"

"Yes."

"So, you are extremely sure you want to be with Allen as your stepfather?"

"Yes."

"Why not your biological dad?"

"He's married to another woman with kids. It would be a misery sharing my father with those strangers."

"But you know there's a tendency for Allen to get married to someone else?"

"If that's the case, then he would have to drop all that belongs to my mom and go ahead with his new life."

"Well, according to the documents here, your mom gave her will to both of you."

"Hmm, when would it be perfect? Can I ask Allen a question?" Kaylee asked.

"Sure," the judge said and gestured to Allen, who was already anticipating the question.

"Do you have any plans on getting married soon?"

Allen looked at her and smiled. "I don't know yet. I may find someone else earlier, later, or never."

"Ha ha," Kaylee laughed wryly. "My Lord, may I ask for a well-documented write-up concerning how long he would be single to finalize this whole thing?"

"Miss Zachary, how about you save yourself the stress of all this? I understand you're too young and unable to make your own decisions. Why not go abroad with your father and have a better life?"

"I'm sorry, my lord. I have no plans on doing that."

"Okay then, this court is adjourned to the 16th of August."

"Court!"
