The crew of the Shadowfang floated in uneasy silence as the void around them seemed to grow colder, darker, and heavier. Though the immediate threat of the Nexus had been quelled, the burden of what lay ahead weighed on everyone. They weren't just fugitives anymore—they were walking contradictions, carrying the remnants of the Nexus while trying to undo its corruption.
Whispers in the Void
Iris sat alone in her quarters, staring at her reflection in the small, cracked mirror mounted on the wall. Her tattoos pulsed faintly, the residual energy of the Nexus shifting within her. She clenched her fists, trying to silence the whispers in her mind.
"You think you've won?" the voice of the Nexus taunted. "You are not free. You are the vessel."
"Shut up," Iris muttered, pressing her hands against her temples.
The whispers intensified, showing her visions of power—of worlds at her feet, entire civilizations kneeling before her might.
A knock at the door snapped her out of the trance. "Iris? It's Arkan. Can I come in?"
Iris hesitated before responding. "Yeah. Come in."
Arkan stepped inside, his presence steadying her. "You okay? You've been quiet since we left the fragment."
"I'm fine," she lied, avoiding his gaze.
"You don't have to pretend with me," Arkan said, leaning against the wall. "Whatever's going on, we'll face it together."
Iris finally looked at him, her expression conflicted. "I can still feel it, Arkan. The Nexus. It's... inside me. It wants control."
"Then we'll fight it," Arkan said without hesitation. "Like we've fought everything else."
Iris gave a faint smile. "Thanks. But this fight might be mine alone."
A Divided Crew
In the common area, the rest of the crew was deep in discussion.
"This isn't sustainable," Taron said, crossing his arms. "We're carrying a ticking time bomb. If the Nexus regains control of Iris, we're all dead."
"Watch your mouth," Kyra snapped, her hand on her katana. "She's one of us."
"I'm just being realistic," Taron shot back. "We need a plan in case things go south."
"Enough," Luna interjected, her tone firm. "Iris is fighting harder than any of us. She needs our support, not our doubts."
"He's not wrong, though," Kairo said reluctantly. "We've seen what the Nexus can do. If it takes over Iris again, we won't stand a chance."
Kyra glared at him. "Then we make sure it doesn't. Simple as that."
Taron scoffed. "It's not that simple, and you know it."
The argument was cut short when Iris and Arkan entered the room.
"What's going on?" Iris asked, her eyes narrowing.
The crew fell silent, their guilt evident.
"Let me guess," Iris said, crossing her arms. "You're debating whether to trust me or put me down if things go wrong."
"No one's putting anyone down," Kyra said quickly, shooting a glare at Taron.
Taron sighed. "We're just trying to figure out how to handle this. If the Nexus regains control—"
"It won't," Iris said firmly. "I won't let it."
The conviction in her voice silenced the room, though doubt lingered in some of their eyes.
The Message
Before the tension could escalate further, Luna's console lit up with an incoming transmission.
"Uh, we're getting a signal," Luna said, rushing to her station. "It's encrypted, but I can crack it."
"Do it," Arkan said.
A moment later, the screen flickered to life, revealing the face of a man dressed in a sharp, black uniform. His piercing eyes and cold demeanor sent a chill through the room.
"Shadowfang crew," the man said, his voice icy. "This is Commander Dorian of the Revenant Fleet. You've caused quite a stir."
"What do you want?" Arkan asked, stepping forward.
Dorian's lips curled into a smirk. "Surrender yourselves and the Nexus vessel. Or we'll hunt you down and take what we want by force."
Kyra rolled her eyes. "Oh, great. Another power-hungry idiot."
"You misunderstand," Dorian said, his smirk widening. "This isn't a request. This is a warning. The Revenant Fleet will not tolerate the Nexus's power in the hands of renegades."
The screen went dark, and the crew exchanged uneasy glances.
"Who the hell are the Revenant Fleet?" Kairo asked.
"Bad news," Taron said grimly. "They're mercenaries with more firepower than some entire star systems. If they're after us, we're in serious trouble."
"Let them come," Kyra said, gripping her katana. "We'll cut them down like we always do."
"This isn't a fight we can win head-on," Luna said. "We need a plan."
The Storm Approaches
As the crew debated their next move, Iris stood apart, her mind racing. She could feel the Nexus stirring within her, feeding off her fear and doubt.
"Let me guide you," the Nexus whispered. "Let me protect you."
"I don't need you," Iris muttered under her breath.
But deep down, she knew the truth: the Revenant Fleet was coming, and she might not have a choice.
