Chapter 18 - chapter 18 The Forgotten World

The Shadowfang emerged from hyperspace near a desolate, uncharted planet. Its surface shimmered with a peculiar blue hue, dotted with jagged peaks and swirling storms that reached into the upper atmosphere. The planet's ominous presence was undeniable, its strange energy resonating with the shard secured aboard the ship.

Arkan stood in the cockpit, staring at the planet. The Neo-Ki within him pulsed in rhythm with the shard, as if beckoning him toward the surface.

"This is the place," he said, his voice low.

"You're sure about that?" Luna asked, her hands gripping the controls. "Because this planet screams 'bad idea.'"

"It's calling me," Arkan replied.

A Dangerous Descent

As the Shadowfang began its descent, turbulence rocked the ship violently. The atmosphere was thick with electrical storms, and the ship's systems struggled to compensate.

"Whatever's down there, it doesn't want visitors," Kairo muttered, adjusting the stabilizers.

"Or it's protecting something," Iris suggested, her gaze fixed on the data streaming across her console.

Kyra leaned against the wall, her smirk replaced with a thoughtful expression. "Planets like this don't just happen. Someone—or something—designed it."

"Fantastic," Luna muttered. "It's a death trap with a decorator."

Despite the chaos, they managed to land in a relatively stable clearing near the base of a massive, crystalline mountain. The shard's glow intensified, its energy resonating with the planet itself.

The Forgotten Ruins

The crew stepped out into the harsh environment, their gear shielding them from the biting winds and crackling energy in the air. The terrain was unlike anything they had seen before—jagged crystalline structures jutted from the ground, glowing faintly with a pale blue light.

"This place feels alive," Iris said, running a hand along one of the crystals.

"It's Nexus tech," Kyra said, scanning the area with a handheld device. "These crystals are conduits, like your Neo-Ki. Whoever built this planet was harnessing massive amounts of energy."

Arkan moved ahead, his instincts guiding him toward a towering structure carved into the mountainside. Its entrance was flanked by massive statues of armored figures, their eyes glowing faintly.

"This is it," Arkan said, stepping forward.

The statues' eyes blazed to life, and the ground trembled as they began to move.

Guardians of the Nexus

The statues stepped down from their pedestals, their massive forms blocking the entrance. They moved with mechanical precision, their crystalline bodies humming with power.

"Of course," Luna muttered, drawing her blaster. "It's never easy."

Arkan stepped forward, Neo-Ki flaring around him. "I'll take point. Stay back."

"Like hell you will," Kairo said, pulling out his own weapon. "We do this together."

The battle was fierce. The statues were relentless, their crystalline bodies deflecting most attacks. Arkan's Neo-Ki clashed against their energy fields, while Kairo and Luna provided covering fire.

Kyra darted around the battlefield, her movements swift and calculated. She placed charges at the base of one statue, detonating them with a sly grin. The explosion cracked the crystal, causing the statue to falter.

"Nice teamwork," she said, winking at Kairo.

"Don't get cocky," he replied, firing at the second statue.

The Doorway Opens

With a final surge of energy, Arkan delivered a devastating blow to the remaining statue, shattering it into a cascade of crystalline shards. The crew stood amidst the wreckage, catching their breath.

The entrance to the structure rumbled and began to open, revealing a dark corridor lined with glowing runes.

"Looks inviting," Luna said sarcastically.

"Stay sharp," Arkan said, stepping inside.

The Heart of the Planet

The corridor led to a vast chamber, its walls covered in intricate carvings that seemed to tell a story. At the center of the room was a pedestal, upon which another shard floated, its energy pulsating in harmony with the one they had already found.

"This must be it," Iris said, approaching the pedestal cautiously.

As she reached for the shard, the chamber began to tremble, and a deep, rumbling voice echoed through the room.

"WHO DARES TO DISTURB THE NEXUS?"

The crew spun around, weapons at the ready, as a massive, spectral figure emerged from the carvings. It was humanoid in shape but made entirely of glowing energy, its eyes blazing with an otherworldly light.

"I am the Keeper," it said, its voice reverberating through the chamber. "This shard is not yours to take."

Arkan stepped forward, his Neo-Ki flaring. "We're not here to destroy. We're here to stop the Crimson Vow."

The Keeper studied him for a moment, its glowing eyes narrowing. "Your power is of the Nexus, yet you are incomplete. You seek the shards to restore what was lost, but do you understand the cost?"

The Keeper's Challenge

Before Arkan could respond, the Keeper raised its hand, and the chamber shifted. The walls dissolved into a swirling void, and the crew found themselves standing on a floating platform surrounded by endless darkness.

"If you wish to claim the shard, you must prove your worth," the Keeper said.

Suddenly, spectral warriors emerged from the void, their forms shifting and flickering like flames. They charged at the crew without hesitation.

"Here we go again," Luna muttered, opening fire.

The battle was unlike anything they had faced before. The spectral warriors were fast and unpredictable, their attacks phasing through traditional defenses. Arkan's Neo-Ki was the only thing that seemed to harm them, and he fought with everything he had.

The platform shifted and fragmented beneath them, forcing the crew to adapt quickly. Kyra used her agility to outmaneuver the warriors, while Kairo and Luna provided covering fire.

"You've got this, Arkan!" Iris shouted, her eyes scanning the battlefield for weaknesses.

A Test of Resolve

As the last warrior fell, the Keeper reappeared, its form towering above them.

"You fight well," it said, its voice softer now. "But strength alone is not enough. The shards carry a burden. To wield them is to accept that burden."

"I'm ready," Arkan said, his voice steady.

The Keeper studied him for a moment longer, then nodded. The shard floated down from the pedestal, its glow intensifying as it merged with the one they already carried.

"Your journey is far from over," the Keeper said. "The Vow seeks not just power, but domination. If they succeed, the galaxy will fall into darkness."

The chamber began to dissolve, returning them to the mountainside.

Cliffhanger

As the crew regrouped, Arkan felt the combined shards resonating within him. The Neo-Ki inside him burned brighter, but so did the weight of responsibility.

"Two down," Kairo said, breaking the silence. "How many more to go?"

"Enough to change everything," Kyra said, her gaze distant.

In the distance, the roar of engines echoed through the mountains. The Syndicate wasn't far behind.

"Let's move," Arkan said, determination in his voice.

As the Shadowfang lifted off, the crew couldn't shake the feeling that their victory was just the beginning of something far more dangerous.
