Chapter 1: The Awakening
The sun had barely risen when Kael's boots crunched against the gravel path leading through the abandoned ruins. The wind, cool and crisp with the smell of earth and decay, rustled through the cracked stone walls of what had once been a grand temple. Now, only broken statues and fragments of stone remained, remnants of an ancient civilization long forgotten.
Kael, a boy of sixteen, had lived in the slums of the city for as long as he could remember. Life had never been kind to him, but it had taught him the value of perseverance. He had survived by his wits, scavenging through ruins like this for anything of value that could be sold to the traders in the marketplace. It was a hard life, but it was the only one he knew.
As he explored the ruins, Kael's eyes fell upon an ornate pedestal hidden beneath layers of ivy. Atop the pedestal rested a pendant—a glowing, moon-shaped stone, surrounded by intricate carvings. The pendant seemed to shimmer even in the early light, pulsing with a faint glow that caught Kael's attention.
"Lucky find," he muttered to himself, stepping forward. Reaching out, he brushed the dust away and carefully picked up the pendant, its surface smooth and cool to the touch.
The moment his fingers made contact with it, the ground trembled beneath his feet. Kael stumbled backward, his heart racing. The pendant's glow intensified, and a powerful gust of wind swept through the ruins, though no storm had come. The ancient stones groaned, as if awakening from a long slumber.
Then, a voice—soft, almost melodic—whispered in his mind.
"Who dares to awaken me?"
Kael froze. He blinked rapidly, his pulse quickening. The voice was not his own, and it did not come from anywhere he could see. It echoed in his head, and it felt both strange and familiar.
"W-what...?" Kael gasped, dropping the pendant, but it remained in his hand, as if glued to his palm.
"I am Lunaria Selene," the voice continued, more clearly now. "The goddess of the moon... and the protector of this world."
Kael's eyes widened. A goddess? he thought, still clutching the pendant. Was he dreaming?
"You have awakened me from my slumber, Kael," Lunaria's voice said, and the name was strange—yet, it sounded like it belonged to him. How does she know my name?
"You are the one... the one who holds the key to my freedom."
The world around him blurred, and Kael's vision was filled with flashes of brilliant white light. He saw an image of the moon, surrounded by swirling galaxies, each one more beautiful than the last. And then... he saw Lunaria.
Her figure was a vision of elegance, a celestial being with flowing silver hair that seemed to reflect the stars themselves. Her eyes—pale, shimmering blue—looked down at him with a mix of sadness and hope.
"I am bound to this world, Kael, trapped in the ruins of time," Lunaria explained. "I sacrificed my being to seal away the darkness, the very force that threatens to consume everything. But now, that darkness is returning... and I need your help to stop it."
Kael's breath caught in his throat. He had heard the legends of the great battle that once took place between the celestial beings and the dark forces, but he had always thought them to be just stories.
Yet here, in his hand, was the pendant that proved the legends true. And the goddess herself had just spoken to him. The weight of it all sank in. His life, the life of every living being, could be in danger.
"But I'm just a nobody," Kael protested, staring at the pendant. "I don't even know how to fight. I'm just... a boy."
Lunaria's voice softened, like the gentle rustle of wind through trees. "You are far more than you know, Kael. The pendant you hold connects us, and within it lies the power of the moon itself. Together, we can restore balance... and stop Erebus."
"Erebus?" Kael repeated, confusion lacing his words. "Who's that?"
"The one who seeks to break the seal I placed upon the world," Lunaria explained. "He was once a celestial like me... but he was consumed by the darkness. Now, he will stop at nothing to plunge the world into eternal night."
Kael felt a chill run down his spine as Lunaria's words sank in. He wasn't just holding a pendant; he was holding the key to an ancient power, the fate of the world resting on his shoulders.
"I will help you," Kael said finally, the determination rising within him. "I don't know how, but I'll do whatever it takes."
A soft glow emanated from the pendant, bathing him in its gentle light. Lunaria's presence seemed to grow stronger, her voice filled with gratitude.
"Then together, we will face the darkness... and reclaim the world I once loved."
