Chapter 5 - atlanta(edited)

---

Shane was in the car with Rick's family, trying to catch some news on the radio. It had been a while since things started to get strange, and helicopters could be heard flying everywhere.

Carly:

Mom, I'm hungry.

Lori:

I know, Carly, I'm hungry too. We'll get you something to eat soon, okay?

Carol, who was nearby, heard the boy's complaints and decided to help. They still had plenty of food in the car, and she didn't think it would be a problem to share some.

Carol:

We've got plenty of food left. I'll grab some for him.

Lori:

I'd really appreciate that, thank you.

After that, Carol went to the car to get some food for the boy. When she opened the door, her husband Ed slammed it shut, stopping her.

Ed:

What do you think you're doing? Giving our food to strangers? We don't even know these people.

Carol:

Her kid is hungry. We can share a little with them.

Ed:

We can't just give our food away to strangers! How long do you think it'll last if you keep handing it out to anyone who needs it?

Carol:

I'm sorry, I didn't think about that.

As Carol apologized, humiliated by her husband's harshness, a long-haired man armed with a gun and a crossbow appeared behind them.

Daryl:

Is there a problem here, ma'am?

Daryl was filthy, his clothes were different now, but he was still sweaty and carried a strong odor. He looked intimidating. Carol immediately felt scared of the man. She didn't want her husband to cause trouble with someone like him.

Ed:

This ain't your business, buddy!

Ed said this before turning around and seeing the man's appearance. Ed was always an aggressive jerk, but he wasn't stupid. When he turned, he saw an armed, tall man who looked like he had stepped out of a movie.

Daryl stepped closer to Ed and asked:

Daryl:

What did you say?

Ed grew nervous and started stammering under pressure.

Ed:

I didn't say anything. I'm sorry, thought you were someone else.

Daryl:

Oh, alright. Must've misheard.

Daryl turned to Carol and said:

Daryl:

If you need any help, just let me know.

Ed heard that and could only keep his mouth shut.

Daryl didn't like Ed. He didn't hit him only because the man's daughter was there, and he didn't want to make a bad impression. But Daryl was sure that the next time he caught Ed causing trouble, he wouldn't hold back.

Daryl turned and saw Lori looking at him, probably frightened by the rifle on his back. Carly was also there, staring at him with admiration in his eyes, likely because of the weapons. Carly, even at a young age, had a fascination with guns. He looked up at the stranger and asked:

Carly:

Is that a gun on your back?

Lori:

Carly, don't be rude. Don't ask things like that.

Daryl:

Yeah. You like it?

Carly:

Yeah, it's awesome! Can I see it?

Hearing her son's question, Lori quickly stepped in, not wanting him to become a "gun nut." She turned to the stranger and apologized for her son's behavior.

Lori:

Sorry, my son's really into this stuff. His dad's a cop.

Daryl:

I get it. Here, take this.

Daryl pulled some food from his backpack that he had taken from a gas station.

Lori:

Thank you so much, but we can't accept this.

Daryl insisted, and after some hesitation, Lori accepted the food.

Daryl:

Your husband's a cop? My brother and I are hunters. We're traveling.

Lori:

Yes. I hope he's okay.

Shane stepped out of the car and told Lori that the radio signal wasn't working, and everything had gone silent.

Shane:

I'm gonna check up ahead.

Lori, who had gone to talk to Shane, returned to Carol and asked if she could watch Carly for a moment while she went with him.

Lori:

Stay here. I'm just going to check up ahead.

Carly wanted to go with her, but Lori wouldn't allow it.

Daryl, who was nearby, approached Shane and said:

Daryl:

I'll go with you to see what's going on.

Shane didn't mind; he was too preoccupied and just nodded.

Daryl called his brother, who was in the back. He wanted his brother to see the destruction of Atlanta as well. They started walking ahead. Daryl, Lori, Shane, and Merle, who was trailing behind, could hear the growing commotion of people and saw helicopters heading toward Atlanta.

They reached the edge of a cliff overlooking the city, and what they saw shocked them. Military helicopters were dropping bombs on people, blowing everything up. The entire city was burning due to napalm strikes.

Lori:

Oh my God!

Shane:

They're dropping napalm on people!

They could hear distant screams coming from the city. Lori was scared and devastated, and Shane pulled her into a hug.

Daryl and Merle, who had arrived later, saw it too.

Daryl thought to himself: I need to get ready because the apocalypse has already begun.
