Chapter 1 - The light in the cracks of the darkness.

In the darkness of the night, the bright light cast long shadows over the fading cityscape. Katsushi tightened his grip on his sledgehammer, his muscles tense, ready to jump on anything and everything with his trusty tool. Beside him, Daiki adjusted her hastily strapped baseball bat, her wide, alert eyes scanning her surroundings. The siblings had survived many frustrating nights since the outbreak, but tonight felt... weird? The air was heavy with the smell of rot and the distant stench of the infected.

They stepped silently through the dusty streets in search of food and supplies. The abandoned convenience store out front offered a glimmer of hope. Katsushi motioned for Daiki. "Psss, look there," he said as he pointed to a store. The place was eerily quiet. Shelves had fallen off, and rotting food was strewn across the floor. They moved swiftly but cautiously, knowing that danger was a few steps away from their doom.

As Daiki picked up a dusty bag of rice, making her grunt a little, a loud crash rang out from the back room, a pot rolling on the store ground. Katsushi froze, holding his breath, he quickly and silently rushed to see the cause of the fallen cooking item. As he peeked from the corner of an aisle, his heart dropped, it was a zombie, but it wasn't a regular dumb and easy-to-target zombie, this one... was thin, too thin for a normal person or even a zombie to be able to special tasks. "What the f...." he silently said under his breath before the weird monstrosity turned around and locked his eyes with his. His eyes were red, glowing in the dark like an eagle looking at his mouse prey in the night.

Katsushi quickly pulled his head from the corner, rushed to Daiki to warn her about the weird zombie, and made her hide. She barely was able to hide behind a fallen table that hid her pretty well but scratched her leg as she was moving inside the small place. The zombie was right behind Katsushi, breathing down his neck. He stood there frozen, eyes wide open from shock. In his head, he quickly calculated all the possibilities of escaping and even killing the weird zombie, but since he didn't know what it could do he started to sweat, panicking looking at his sister hiding. Luckily, the zombie is still only looming over Katsushi, breathing down his neck, thinking?... or maybe unsure what to do?.. who knows what goes on in that weirdo's rotten mind.

Seeing the panic in his eyes, she smiles at him, telling him through her gesture that everything will be alright. Katsushi, seeing his sister's smile, calmed down, taking a silent and deep breath, and then he had an idea. He signaled to his sister to throw a pebble behind him to distract the weird zombie. She did as asked, and the second the pebble hit the store ground, it turned his head 180 degrees without rotating his body, almost instantly, scanning the area he heard it from. Then it finally hit Katsushi, this weird zombie was fast, too fast, but thin and almost blind. He gripped the sledgehammer hard and swung behind him, hitting him in the head before it could register the sound of his body moving and his shoes moving the dust from the ground.

The fight was fast. Katsushi's brute force killed the mutated freak, but not before he let out a curling scream, alerting his fellow rotten freaks. They looked at each other before both sprinting out of the store through the back, every few steps both looking back to see if any zombie was following them. Luckily, they still didn't arrive. As the siblings were running, Daiki saw a ruined building, signaling to Katsushi to rush there, and so he did, behind his sister rushing to the building.

Reaching a ruined building, Katsushi pushed Daiki through a small opening, pushing back as soon as the infected started to invade the store that the fast zombie was killed. They both breathe heavily but cover their mouth to not make too much sound, and Katsushi is looking through the cracks of the broken-down outside, looking at the zombies fast walking to the store.

Daiki smiled weakly as she caught her breath. "That was pretty close huh?", she chuckles a little, still breathing heavily. Katsushi smiled a bit at her before turning back to his stoic and serious face. "Yeah, thank god that he was the only special freak around here". Both began to laugh a bit, making fun of what they had.

As they were laughing, Katsushi looked out the cracked windows and the last of the sunlight disappeared, leaving them in darkness. "Well, looks like it's time to hit the bed," Katsushi said, walking through the building, trying to find a secure room so they could barricade the door and try to be safe for another night. And so he did, after going inside the room slowly with his sister the look out at the door, he wandered through the place until it seemed safe. After confirming, he began to block the door with what he could, and then the siblings went off to sleep.
