Chapter 83 - An open letter to smoke

Dear Smokers,

It's time we all had a talk. Cigarettes are not doing anybody any favours.

The health problems caused by cigarettes to you are no longer a risk worth taking Do you really want to get lung cancer?

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer (90%). The lung cancer five-year survival rate is only 17.7%. Your kids, your spouse, your family (close and extended), your friends, no one wants to watch you die of a disease that has one of the lowest survival rates on the earth. Why do you stay a slave to an addiction that is greatly harming you?

You can't imagine what damage this tobacco roll can cause Have a look at this picture to know which parts of the body can be affected by it. It is just suicidalt

Smelling like smoke

The smell of a cigarette's smoke, is not one many people describe favourably.

Steven Schroeder, MD, director of the Smoking Cessation Leadership Centre at the University of California in San Francisco, says that smokers are commonly self-conscious about the smell of smoke on their clothes and in their hair. And the smell of their breath is one of the major concems of most smokers.

Sense of smell and taste

Smelling like an ashtray isn't the only impact smoking has on the nose. Smokers also expenerice a dulling of their senses, smell and taste particular take a hit when you smake

Smokers can't appreciate the taste of many foods as intensely as they did before smoking. but it's the loss of the sense of smell that diminishes the ability to taste, notes Andrew Spielman, DMD, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs and professor of basic science and craniofacial biology at the NYU School of Dentistry. Breathing in the hot fumes of cigarette smoke is toxic to the senses.

Some smokers realise that foods doesn't taste the way it used to, but the process can be quite gradual, making it difficult to detect. Quitting brings a swift return of the senses.

I can't tell you how many smokers who have successfully quit come back to the clinic and say eating is a totally different experience, says Michael Fiore, MD, MPH. founder and director of the University of Wisconsin Centre for Tobacco Research and Intervention. "The pleasure of eating is dramatically enhanced when smokers quit. And it happens within a few days but can continue for up to three to six months

One of the chief and significant causes of premature aging of the face is smoking, Fiore says. Skin changes, like leathery skin and deep wrinkling, are more likely in people who are regular smokers. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, smoking leads to biochemical changes in the body that speeds up the aging process. For example, smoking deprives the living skin tissues, of oxygen by causing constriction of the blood vessels. As a result, blood doesn't get to your organs easily, and that includes the skin also.Another classic smoker giveaway is tar staining of the hands and skin from holding cigarettes Boming cigarette smoke is most apparent around the face and I think what we sometimes see is staining of the skin from the tart and other deadly toxins in tobacco smoke. Fiore says

Flore also points out that the muscle actions required to inhale leaf to the classic smoker's wrinkles around the mouth

The amount of litter caused by cigarette butts is getting absolutely out of tha This is just disgusting and it is everywhere. There is nowhere one can't find at least one cigarette butt lying on the ground on hiking trails, at amusement parks outside of hotels, restaurants, stores, etc. You can't even go into nature anymore without finding cigarette butts littered EVERYWHERE. It is gross, unsanitary, and unhealthy. Animals eat these cigarette butts

Tobacco is not good for people or animals. It makes them sick. It has got to the point that it makes me angry every time I'm driving behind someone and see him or her throw a cigarette butt out of the window onto the street. I want to ask you all, what do you think happens to all those cigarette butts? They stay there or are picked up by some animal. Neither alternative is acceptable.

The health problems caused to others caused by your smoking habits are unacceptable. Two out of five adults and half of children who do not smoke cigarettes are still exposed to second-hand smoke.

You're a danger to others

Second-hand smoke is estimated to cause 50,000 deaths every year It's no wonder: More than 4,500 separate chemicals are found in a puff of tobacco smoke, and more than 40 of those are known carcinogens. It takes very little second-hand smoke to trigger a heart attack or stroke in someone who is predisposed to that condition, Schroeder says. The ingredients in smoke cause platelets, the material in our blood that helps it clot, become sticky. This increases the risk of heart attacks. There have been a number of studies to show that when a community goes smoke-free the proportion of heart attacks seen at the hospitals goes down by a to 30%, Schroeder says

Every yeat: 7.300 people who have lung cancer because of the second-hand smoke Not only is it affecting smakers children, others children, but others as who molate their second-hand smoke. That smoke doesn't just go away after a cigarette butt is put out. It lingers on clothes, breath, and even furrature (if someone smake's inside). Smokers, please do not put others in danger for the sake of your addiction.

Impact on physical activity

Many smokers report a diminished ability over time to comfortably do things as simple as climbing a set of stairs or enjoying sports activities they once easily took part in, such as volleyball or jogging.

According to Schroeder, even young athletes in otherwise top physical condition don't perform well if they smoke, because over time, smoking causes the lungs and heart to work harder.

An Expensive addiction

Smoking is an unhealthy and expensive addiction. The average American smoker spends anywhere between $1,500 and $3,300 a year on cigarettes. Not only does smoking take years off your life, but it also takes a significant amount of money out of your pocket. There are so many things to spend those thousands of bucks on, like a weekend family vacation or school supplies for the children. One, literally, burns through cigarettes and the money spent on them, in absolutely no time at all.

Sincerely,
