Chereads / Dominion of Shadow / Chapter 64 - The Gathering Tide

Chapter 64 - The Gathering Tide

The morning brought an eerie stillness to the wasteland. The Dominion's camp bustled with activity, but the disciples' movements were sharper, more deliberate. The recent battles had hardened them, their fear tempered by the knowledge that their survival depended on unity. Yet, beneath the surface, doubts still lingered, carried in the hushed whispers and sidelong glances.

Kael stood at the Obsidian Altar, his gaze fixed on the horizon. The shard and ring pulsed faintly in his hands, their energy a steady reminder of the Abyss's growing presence. He could feel its whispers swirling around him, sharper and more insistent with every passing day.

"You stand on the edge," the voices said. "Will you rise, or will you fall?"

Scouts Report

A group of scouts returned to the camp, their faces pale but determined. Zereth met them at the perimeter, his dark eyes narrowing as he listened to their report.

"There's movement on the northern plains," one scout said, their voice steady despite the tension in their posture. "It's not Seris, but it's organized."

Zereth nodded, his gaze sharp. "How many?"

"Enough to challenge us," the scout replied. "And they're moving fast."

Zereth relayed the information to Kael, his tone calm but urgent. "If they're not Seris's forces, they're either opportunists or a new threat. Either way, we need to be ready."

Kael's grip tightened on the Abyssal Fang. "We don't wait for them to come to us. We take the fight to them."

A Preemptive Strike

Kael gathered the senior disciples to formulate a plan. Ryn, Sylas, Zereth, and Vaelon stood around the central table, their expressions focused.

"If they're coming from the north, we can use the terrain to our advantage," Ryn said, her tone steady. "Ambush them before they reach open ground."

Sylas smirked faintly. "Sounds fun. Nothing like a surprise party to keep things interesting."

Vaelon frowned. "We can't afford to split our forces too much. If Seris strikes while we're away…"

Kael nodded. "That's a risk we have to take. If we wait, we'll be fighting on two fronts. This is our best chance to stay ahead."

Zereth leaned forward, his voice measured. "Then we move at dusk. We'll strike hard and fast."

Into the Shadows

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Kael led a group of handpicked disciples into the northern plains. The shadows grew thicker as they moved, their energy coiling around the group like living things. The shard and ring pulsed steadily, their glow casting faint light on the path ahead.

"We're close," Ryn said quietly, her blade gleaming faintly in the dim light. "Their camp is just over that ridge."

Kael signaled for the group to halt, his gaze scanning the terrain. The enemy camp was visible in the distance, its fires flickering against the darkened sky. The air was thick with tension as Kael gave the signal to move.

The First Engagement

The ambush was swift and precise. Shadows surged across the enemy camp, their movements sharp and deliberate. The disciples moved with practiced efficiency, their strikes cutting through the enemy lines.

Kael led the charge, the Abyssal Fang carving a path through the chaos. The shard and ring amplified his power, his movements a blur of shadow and steel. The enemy forces faltered under the assault, their disorganized retreat a testament to the Dominion's strength.

Ryn fought beside him, her blade moving like an extension of her will. "They weren't expecting this," she said, her tone calm but sharp. "We caught them off guard."

Kael nodded, his gaze steady. "Good. Let's keep it that way."

A Sudden Turn

As the enemy forces began to scatter, a new presence emerged from the shadows. A figure cloaked in dark energy stepped forward, their aura radiating power. Kael felt the shard and ring pulse sharply in response, their energy resonating with the newcomer's presence.

"You've made quite the name for yourself, Kael," the figure said, their voice low and resonant. "But you've only begun to scratch the surface of the Abyss."

Kael raised the Abyssal Fang, his voice steady. "And who are you supposed to be?"

The figure smiled faintly, their shadows coiling around them. "I am someone who understands the Abyss better than you ever will. And I've come to see if you're worthy of it."

A Clash of Shadows

The figure's attack was sudden and overwhelming, their strikes laced with Abyssal energy. Kael countered with precision, his movements sharp and deliberate. The shard and ring glowed brightly as they amplified his power, their energy clashing with the figure's in a chaotic symphony.

"You rely on the Abyss," the figure said, their tone sharp. "But you don't understand it."

Kael gritted his teeth, channeling the shard's energy into his next strike. "Then maybe it's time I learned."

Their clash shook the ground beneath them, the force of their strikes sending shockwaves across the battlefield. Kael could feel the Abyss surging within him, its whispers sharper and more insistent.

Victory and Uncertainty

As the figure faltered, Kael struck with a decisive blow. Shadows surged forward, overwhelming the enemy and forcing them to retreat. The battle ended as quickly as it had begun, the northern plains falling silent once more.

Kael stood amidst the wreckage, the shard and ring glowing faintly in his hands. The Abyss's whispers were quieter now, their tone contemplative.

"You have proven your strength," the voices said. "But the Abyss is not finished with you."

Ryn approached, her expression a mix of relief and concern. "Another victory. But how many more can we take before it's too much?"

Kael nodded, his gaze distant. "As many as we need to."
