CHAPTER 7
Darek's POV
I was so shocked when I saw the rogue attack Verity, I loved the way she didn't back down even though she was weak.
Her fiesty character is admirable but can also be her greatest weakness. It can lead to her death.
She has a strong spirit. She wouldn't break easily. I really admired that tough part of her.
My instincts told me that the rogue's attack on Verity wasn't a coincidence. It wasn't random. They were after her, and the mention of the key confirmed my darkest fears.
The key wasn't just a symbol—it was real. A secret my family had protected for generations, tied to a power so ancient and dangerous that even the pack's elders whispered its name with caution. And now, the rogues were after it.
What kept bothering my mind was how the rogues knew about the existence of the key.
The key had been with us for generations but no one was ever after it.
So why do they want it now that verity is here?
But why Verity, How was she connected to the key?
I needed to get answers to these.
I stormed into my office, slamming the door behind me. Caleb was already there, waiting with a grim expression.
"I heard about the attack," he said. "Is she okay?"
"She's fine," I snapped, though the words felt hollow. I hated the surge of fear I'd felt seeing her in danger, the way my wolf had taken over without hesitation.
Caleb leaned forward. "This isn't just about the rogues anymore, is it?"
I hesitated, weighing my words. Caleb was my Beta, my closest ally, but even he didn't know the full truth about the key.
"They're after something that could destroy everything we've built," I said finally. "And Verity might be the only one who can lead us to it."
He frowned. "Why her?"
"I don't know yet," I admitted, though the uncertainty gnawed at me. "But until I figure it out, she stays under my protection."
Caleb nodded, his loyalty unwavering. "What's the plan?"
"Double the patrols," I said. "No one gets in or out without my approval. And keep an eye on Verity. She's stubborn, and if she senses we're hiding something, she'll go digging."
"And if she finds out the truth?"
I didn't answer. The truth was a burden I wasn't ready to share—not with Verity, not with anyone.
The truth could end up destroying everything we stand for and everything we have built over the years. I won't let that happen in my pack. Not while I'm alive.
The noise coming from the chambers interrupted our discussion.
Caleb also shocked by the noise jwent to check what was going on.
"Alpha, the rogues have invaded the pack. They are killing our men without mercy." He said before shifting into his wolf form to defend the pack.
The rogues have invaded my pack, this caught me unaware there was no way they could get into the palace without the help of someone from inside.
Without thinking much I shifted into my wolf form and joined in the fight. I needed to protect my pack from these monsters. Not that I'm any better but I don't kill without a cause.
I tore through the rogues, my wolf fueled by rage and the primal need to protect. It was very happy cause it's been long since he has killed without much reproach.
But it wasn't enough. The more they died the more of they kept coming, their numbers seemingly endless. These seems like a well planned attack. They had studied the lay our of the pack.
And in the chaos, I caught a glimpse of Verity.
She was standing in the middle of the hall, the box clutched in her hands, her expression determined.
My eyes trailed down to the box in her hands. Why the hell is she still with the box right now.
Damn it, Verity.
I shifted back into human form, ignoring the pain of my wounds as I made my way to her.
"Are you insane?" I growled, grabbing her arm. "You're supposed to be hiding!"
"I'm done hiding," she shot back, her voice trembling but strong. "If they want me, then I need to know why."
"Why did you allow her to be here?" I asked Caleb who was fighting a rogue in front of him.
"I didn't have a choice Alpha, she won't listen to me. I had to keep her close to me so that she will be save" he said, still struggling with another rogue.
I don't know what to do with this lady, another female werewolf I know of will find a way to hide but she walked into the lion's den with her head held high.
Her defiance sent a surge of conflicting emotions through me—anger, frustration, and something dangerously close to admiration.
But there was no time to argue. I knew I had to get her out of here. Holding her hands to take her out of the fighting grounds she struggled with me.
"Let me be Darek, I can take care of myself and even if I die here you want to be out to blame." She said not knowing the effects of her words on me.
I didn't have time to argue with her I just took my hands pulling her. We were about to leave before a massive rogue lunged toward us, its jaws snapping inches from Verity's face. I moved on instinct, shifting back into my wolf and slamming into it with all my strength.
The rogue went down, but I wasn't fast enough to stop the second one.
It grabbed Verity, dragging her toward the edge of the fight.
"No!"
I broke into a sprint, my wolf's howl echoing through the hall as I fought my way toward her.
But before I could reach her, the box in her hands began to glow.
The key…..
Verity was not just a medium to activate the key, she is the key herself.
