Chapter 16 - The Traces Left Behind

After the decisive battle on the dark battlefield, the calm that followed was nothing more than an illusion. Although Jareth had been destroyed and the Forbidden Gate sealed, the world was far from safe. The dark forces once controlled by the Outsider still lingered in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to rise again.

Van, Lyria, and Eren stood atop the ruins of the battlefield, gazing at the sky as it slowly began to brighten. They couldn't fully savor their victory because they knew the true threat was far from over. The world might have been saved for now, but the looming danger of the Outsider still cast a shadow over their future.

Van lay weakly on the ground, feeling as though his body had lost a significant portion of the strength it once possessed. The sixth fragment had left him, as he had anticipated, and now he felt more vulnerable than ever. Yet, he did not regret his sacrifice. For the first time in his life, he experienced a fleeting sense of true peace.

Lyria sat beside him, carefully tending to his frail body. "Van, you must stay strong. The world still needs you."

Van slowly opened his eyes, gazing at Lyria with a faint smile. "I don't know if I can still be of help, Lyria. Without that power, I'm just... an ordinary man."

Eren, seated nearby, patted Van on the shoulder with understanding. "Power isn't everything, Van. We're still here with you. We'll face this together."

But even with their comforting words, Van couldn't shake the unsettling feeling within him. The fragments were the key to saving this world, but who would gather the remaining pieces? And what would happen if the dark power hidden within those fragments awakened again?

Clues Leading to the Past

As they rested, Van sensed something strange. A faint whisper echoed, like a voice resonating deep within his mind. It reminded him of the woman from his dreams the one who had urged him to collect the fragments and unite them. The voice returned, clearer than ever.

"Van… don't forget your promise. You must gather all the fragments… and ensure they don't fall into the wrong hands."

Van glanced at Lyria and Eren, but they appeared not to hear anything. The whisper faded as quickly as it had come, yet Van felt there was something far greater behind those words something beyond mere destiny binding him to this path.

Suddenly, another voice rang out a voice he recognized.

"Don't just sit there idly! There's still much to be done!" the voice said firmly.

Van turned to see Elda, a member of the Sacred Council who had long been absent. Elda was a wise woman, a sorceress with profound knowledge of this world and the history of its darkness. She hailed from a distant land, and her presence always brought invaluable insight.

"Elda! What's happening? Why have you come now?" Lyria asked, surprised.

Elda stepped closer, her face grave. "Something far greater is unfolding something you cannot yet see. Jareth may have been defeated, but the Outsider hasn't truly been destroyed. The fragments scattered across the world still hold the power to resurrect the Outsider's strength. If that happens, this world will be undone."

Van's heart raced. "What must we do?"

Elda sighed deeply. "You must gather the fragments before the dark forces reclaim them. But it's not just about collecting the pieces. There are deeper secrets about the Outsider and their power that you must uncover. You'll need to venture to ancient places to find more answers."

Lyria and Eren exchanged glances before turning to Van. They knew this wasn't the end of their journey but the beginning of a far more perilous quest.

Van nodded slowly, despite feeling significantly weakened. "We will gather the fragments and stop the Outsider's threat. That is a promise we must keep."

The Search for the Fragments

A new journey began. Van, Lyria, Eren, and Elda set out together to locate the remaining fragments scattered across the world. Despite his weakened state, Van understood that this was his destiny perhaps one he could not escape.

Along their journey, they visited hidden ancient sites, explored the ruins of fallen kingdoms, and faced creatures long forgotten by time. Each step was fraught with challenges and dangers that seemed unrelenting.

In a remote village far to the north, they discovered their first clue. An elderly guardian at a forgotten temple handed them an ancient map that marked the location of one of the fragments. The map led them to treacherous mountains, where a hidden cave safeguarded the fragment they sought.

However, the path to the cave proved far more perilous than they had imagined. Inside the cave, they encountered shadowy creatures that had endured for centuries beings born from darkness and the Outsider's power. Each step drew them deeper into the abyss, yet Van and his companions knew this was a trial they had to overcome.

When they finally uncovered the fragment hidden within the cave, they realized this was only the beginning. The fragment radiated a powerful dark energy, and they knew the Outsider's threat was far greater than they had initially imagined.

The Inescapable Trace of Fate

With one fragment secured, they continued their journey to locate the remaining pieces. However, the closer they came to their goal, the more evident it became that the dark forces were watching. The Outsider was not just a latent threat within the fragments it was a force capable of altering the fate of their world.

Van, who had lost much of his former strength, began to feel something deeper stirring within him. Though he felt weaker, there was a growing connection between him and the fragments. A power to protect this world something far greater than himself was beginning to awaken. He knew this journey would change everything.

One thing was certain: they had to act quickly. The world teetered on the edge of destruction, and they were its last remaining hope.
