Felix had been watching from a distance, sensing the shift in Debbie's energy. He knew her well enough to see that her heart was moving back toward Pasco.
One evening, as they sat in the park, Felix finally
spoke up.
"You're happy, aren't you?" he asked, his voice tinged with sadness. Debbie hesitated but nodded. "I think… I'm starting
to find some peace. "
Felix smiled, though his heart ached. "That's all I ever wanted for you, Debbie. Even if it's not with me."
Tears filled her eyes. "Felix, you've been such a good friend to me. I don't know how I would've gotten through everything without you."
"You don't owe me anything," he said gently. "Just
promise me you'll take care of yourself. And him. If he makes you happy, that's all I need to know."
Felix's quiet strength and selflessness left Debbie
both heartbroken and grateful.
