Felix sat in his family's sprawling villa, nursing a glass of wine. His sister Elise joined him, plopping onto the couch beside him.
"You look like someone stole your dog," Elise teased, nudging him.
"Debbie broke up with me," Felix said bluntly, swirling his wine.
Elise's smile faded. "Oh, Felix. I'm sorry."
He shrugged, though the pain was evident in his
expression. "I saw it coming. She still has feelings for her ex. I couldn't hold onto someone who wasn't
entirely mine."
Elise frowned, leaning her head on his shoulder. "She's an idiot, you know. You're the best thing that's ever happened to her. "
"Maybe," Felix said, his tone distant. "But I couldn't be the person she needed. Not yet, anyway."
Elise sat up, her eyes narrowing. "What do you mean by that?"
Felix sighed, setting his glass down. "Pasco might be what she needs to resolve her past. But if he hurts her again… I'll be waiting."
