Chapter 27 - SHADOWS OF PAST

Ryan stood in the shadow of Manav, his once-aimless existence now bound to a vision greater than himself. But the path was not easy. Manav's empire did not offer sanctuary to the weak—it demanded strength, resilience, and a capacity for ruthlessness that tested even Ryan's limits.

The first trial Manav assigned him was brutal. Ryan was sent alone to infiltrate a fortified outpost belonging to a rival faction. The mission was clear: eliminate the leadership and sow chaos among their ranks. There would be no backup, no second chances.

Ryan hesitated at first, doubt gnawing at him. But Manav's words echoed in his mind:

"Prove to me that you are not the broken man I found."

It was in the heart of that mission that Ryan's transformation began. With nothing but his wits and a blade, he slipped into the outpost under the cover of darkness. The fight that followed was a testament to his willpower—each swing of his blade, each calculated strike, was a step away from the broken soldier he had been.

When he returned to Manav, bloodied but victorious, he knelt before him.

"I am yours to command," Ryan declared, his voice steady.

Manav regarded him silently for a moment before nodding.

"You have earned your place, Ryan Jim. From this day forward, you will be my right hand."

The bond between them was forged not from friendship but from an unspoken understanding—two men united by their drive to reshape the world, each willing to do whatever was necessary.

The corridors of the 4th branch seemed to close in as Yurika led Thane and Liora deeper into the labyrinth. The facility was alive with the hum of hidden machinery, its walls pulsing faintly as though the entire structure were a living organism.

Thane and Liora pushed forward despite the growing sense of unease. Their breaths came heavy, their bodies already straining from the intensity of the fight. Yurika, ever the predator, watched their every move with a calculating gaze.

"Is this the best the Goodie Hunters can offer?" Yurika taunted, her voice dripping with mockery. "You're out of your depth."

Thane lunged at her with a roar, his blade slicing through the air. Yurika parried effortlessly, her plasma blades sparking against his weapon. She twisted, delivering a sharp kick to his side that sent him sprawling.

Liora leapt in to cover him, her strikes swift and precise. But Yurika was faster. She sidestepped one attack, ducked under another, and countered with a slash that tore through Liora's armor.

Blood splattered the ground as Liora stumbled back, clutching her side.

"You'll need more than determination to defeat me," Yurika said coldly.

Thane rose to his feet, his breaths ragged. "We're not done yet."

The two hunters attacked in unison, their movements synchronized. For a moment, it seemed they had gained the upper hand. Thane's heavy strikes forced Yurika onto the defensive, while Liora's agility allowed her to exploit the openings.

But Yurika was not one to be cornered. With a fierce cry, she unleashed a devastating spin, her plasma blades cutting through the air in a blur of light. Thane and Liora barely managed to block the attack, but the force sent them both crashing to the ground.

They tried to rise, but their bodies refused to obey. Blood pooled beneath them as they lay there, their breaths shallow.

Yurika stood over them, her expression unreadable. For a moment, she hesitated, her blades humming with lethal energy. But instead of delivering the killing blow, she turned and began to walk away.

"You're not worth the effort," she said, her voice devoid of emotion. "Tell your master that the Crimson Serpent is far from finished."

Back at the palace, Manav stood in the war room, watching the events unfold through a holographic display. He showed no reaction to the sight of his commanders lying defeated, his expression as cold and unyielding as ever.

Ryan Jim entered the room, his presence a stark contrast to Manav's composed stillness. He glanced at the display, his jaw tightening at the sight of Thane and Liora.

"They failed," Ryan said, his voice low.

Manav turned to him, his gaze sharp. "They were a test. Yurika's strength is not what matters—it's her purpose. She's buying time for something far more dangerous."

Ryan's eyes narrowed. "What are your orders?"

"Prepare for deployment," Manav said. "This isn't the end of the game—it's only the beginning."

As Ryan left to carry out the command, Manav turned back to the display, his mind already calculating the next move.

As Yurika walked through the halls of the 4th branch, she activated a hidden communication device embedded in her wrist. A voice crackled through, low and menacing.

"Did you eliminate them?"

"No," Yurika replied, her tone defiant. "But they won't be a problem for now."

"You took a risk," the voice said.

Yurika smirked. "It's not about killing them. It's about sending a message. Let Manav know he's not untouchable."

The voice was silent for a moment before responding. "Proceed with the plan. The Crimson Serpent will strike soon."

Yurika deactivated the device, her confidence unwavering. She knew the battles ahead would only grow more intense, but she welcomed the challenge.
