Chapter 16 - TRUTH......

Under the blood-red sky of Mars, the tension between Austin and the lone figure simmered like a storm about to break. The Martian air, thin and bitterly cold, carried the weight of an inevitable clash. As the lone figure's glowing eyes bored into Austin's, the ground beneath them trembled—not from the battle yet to be fought, but from the approach of something far more sinister.

"Why are you doing this?" Austin shouted, his voice cutting through the eerie silence. His grip tightened on his blade, the edge gleaming under the faint Martian sunlight.

The lone figure stood tall, an enigmatic presence cloaked in shadows and energy. Its voice echoed deeply, as though it came not from its form but from the very essence of Mars itself.

"You do not understand," it intoned, stepping forward. The sands shifted under its feet, rippling like water. "I am not your enemy. I am your only chance."

Before Austin could retort, a sharp voice rang out behind them, breaking the charged atmosphere.

"Wait!"

All eyes turned to see a small figure running toward the battlefield, a strange contraption strapped to his back. It was Manav, his face flushed with exertion but brimming with determination. He stumbled to a stop, nearly falling over as he unhooked the device and set it on the ground.

"I brought this!" he exclaimed, panting heavily.

"Manav?" Austin's voice was a mixture of frustration and disbelief. "What are you doing here? This isn't—"

"I'm helping!" Manav interrupted, cutting Austin off. He stood defiantly, pointing to the glowing weapon he had dragged across the Martian sands. "This is the Plasma Resonator! It's a weapon Priya and I worked on. It can destabilize enemy shields, and it'll help you fight!"

Austin's jaw clenched as he glared at the boy. "You could've been killed! This is not a game, Manav!"

"I know it's not!" Manav shot back, his voice cracking with emotion. "That's why I'm here. You're going to need this. You're going to need me."

Before Austin could argue further, another voice joined the fray.

"He's right."

The group turned to see Priya approaching, her tablet clutched tightly in her hands. Her expression was a mix of urgency and worry, her usually composed demeanor cracked by the weight of what she had discovered.

"I came because I detected something," she said, holding up the tablet. Its screen pulsed with strange, rhythmic signals. "There's a transmission—something not natural. It's getting closer. Whatever it is, it's alien, and it's coming for us."

The air seemed to grow colder as her words sank in. Even the lone figure tilted its head, as if hearing the signals Priya described.

"What do you mean, alien?" Rhea asked, her voice low.

Priya hesitated, her fingers tightening around the tablet. "The Shades," she said finally. "I think they're near. Closer than we thought."

---

The lone figure suddenly moved, stepping into the center of the group. Its voice, calm but commanding, cut through their rising panic.

"I have seen this moment before," it said, its gaze locking onto Priya. "This is why I intervened. You are the key to their plans."

Priya blinked, taken aback. "What are you talking about?"

The figure's glow dimmed, its energy seeming to ripple with a mix of sadness and resolve. "The Shades seek you because you carry a signal within you—a frequency that resonates with their hive mind. They will not stop until they have you."

The revelation hit like a hammer. Priya's hands shook as she stared at the figure. "That doesn't make sense. Why me?"

"Because you are connected to their future," the figure said cryptically. "And if they take you, there will be no future for your kind."

Austin stepped forward, his voice sharp. "If you knew this, why didn't you just tell us? Why all the riddles?"

The lone figure turned to him, its eyes glowing brighter. "Would you have believed me?"

---

Before anyone could respond, the ground trembled again, this time with a sense of foreboding that made the hairs on their necks stand up. Priya's tablet began to emit a warning beep as the signals spiked.

"They're closer than I thought," she whispered, her face pale.

Manav, undeterred, crouched next to the Plasma Resonator, adjusting its controls. "Good thing I brought this. We'll be ready for them!"

Austin placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, his expression softening. "You've done enough, Manav. Go back to the settlement where it's safe."

Manav looked up at him, his eyes blazing with determination. "No. This is my fight too. I'm not leaving."

The lone figure approached the Resonator, its form flickering with energy. "If the boy wishes to fight, let him. The weapon he has brought may prove critical."

Austin sighed, his frustration giving way to reluctant acceptance. "Fine. But stay behind us."

Manav grinned, giving a mock salute. "Got it."

---

The lone figure turned its attention back to the group, its voice heavy with emotion. "Before the battle begins, there is something you must understand."

The figure's form shimmered, and for a moment, the team saw not the strange, ethereal being but a glimpse of Mars as it once was—a lush, vibrant planet teeming with life.

"I am the last of the Aivoran," it began. "Long before your kind set foot on this world, we thrived here. Mars was our home, a world of beauty and balance."

Its voice grew darker. "But in the year 2020, your kind unleashed a weapon—a missile meant for testing. It struck Mars, and in an instant, our civilization was reduced to ash. I alone survived, bonded with the essence of this planet."

The group stood in stunned silence as the weight of humanity's mistake sank in.

Priya stepped forward, her voice trembling. "If that's true, why are you helping us? After what we did?"

The figure's eyes softened. "Because I have seen the future. And in that future, the Shades consume everything—your world and what remains of mine. If helping you ensures their defeat, then my purpose is fulfilled."

---

The ground shuddered violently, and a distant roar echoed across the barren landscape. The group tensed, their weapons at the ready.

"They're coming," Priya said, her voice barely audible.

The lone figure stepped forward, its energy flaring with renewed intensity. "Then let them come. We will face them together."

As the battle drew closer, the group stood united—a fragile alliance of humans and an ancient being, fighting against an enemy that threatened to destroy them all. In the distance, the shadow of the Shades loomed, their arrival inevitable, their intentions deadly.

And so, under the crimson sky of Mars, the fight for survival began.
