Chapter 4: The Price of Power
Ethan's hands were still shaking from the rush of power as he stood alone in the moonlit clearing. The defeat of the shadow creature had left him feeling both exhilarated and terrified. He had done it—he had wielded the power of the Heaven-Devouring Void Art—but the cost of that victory was already weighing heavily on his mind.
Victor Ashford's words echoed in his mind: The true challenge is learning to master your power before it consumes you.
He couldn't stop thinking about that warning. There was something ominous in Victor's tone, something Ethan couldn't shake. The shadow creature had been a test, a mere glimpse of the power he could wield. But what else lay ahead? What other dangers awaited him on this path of immortality?
The cold night air bit at his skin, but Ethan barely noticed it. His mind was too consumed by the swirling energy inside him. He could feel it, pulsing, waiting for him to use it. It was like a beast in a cage, ready to break free at the slightest provocation. And he had no idea how to control it.
As he turned to leave the clearing, he caught sight of something moving in the shadows—a figure emerging from the darkness.
"You're still here," Ethan muttered, his voice tight. He had hoped for a moment of solitude, but it seemed the world had other plans.
The figure stepped forward, revealing himself to be an older man with a weathered face and a cloak that blended into the night. Ethan instinctively reached for his dagger, but the man raised a hand in peace.
"You're Ethan Blackwood, correct?" the man asked, his voice deep and gravelly. "I've been looking for you."
Ethan narrowed his eyes, studying the man. "Who are you?"
"My name is Galen Torin," the man said, his eyes piercing. "I'm a member of the Elder Circle, a group that watches over the balance of power in this world. I've been sent to make sure you don't fall into the hands of those who would use your power for their own ends."
Ethan's heart skipped a beat. "The Elder Circle? What do you mean? I don't even understand what's happening to me."
Galen studied him for a moment, then stepped closer, his gaze softening slightly. "The Heaven-Devouring Void Art is not something to be taken lightly. It is a power that has shaped the fate of countless realms, and it's tied to the downfall of an immortal."
Ethan's confusion deepened. "A fallen immortal?"
"Yes," Galen continued. "Long ago, an immortal being harnessed the power of the Void Art to become the most powerful entity in existence. But in the end, that power consumed him. It turned him into something unrecognizable, a force of destruction that tore through the realms. The artifact you carry—the pendant—is a remnant of that time. It is a key to that same power. And if you're not careful, it will consume you as well."
The weight of Galen's words pressed down on Ethan's chest, suffocating him. The power he had unlocked, the power he had fought to control—could it really destroy him?
"So, what now?" Ethan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "What am I supposed to do with this power?"
Galen hesitated, his gaze flickering with uncertainty. "First, you must learn to control it. The more you cultivate the Void Art, the more it will seek to dominate your mind, your soul. You must resist it, Ethan. And to do that, you'll need guidance."
"You want to train me?" Ethan's voice was tinged with skepticism. "Why? What do you get out of it?"
Galen's eyes hardened. "It's not about what I get out of it. It's about what's at stake. If you fail, the consequences will be catastrophic. There are those who will stop at nothing to seize that power for themselves, and you'll become nothing more than a pawn in their game."
Ethan clenched his fists, frustration boiling over. "I'm not a pawn! I'll fight for myself, for those I care about. But I don't know how to control this power. I don't even understand it."
Galen's expression softened slightly, and he placed a hand on Ethan's shoulder. "That's why I'm here. I can teach you, but you must be willing to learn. The path you're walking is dangerous, and you'll face enemies far more powerful than you can imagine. But with the right guidance, you can become the master of this power. But only if you trust me."
Ethan looked into Galen's eyes, searching for any hint of deception. But all he saw was sincerity, a deep understanding of the burden he carried. For the first time since the pendant had awakened, Ethan felt a small spark of hope.
"Fine," Ethan said, his voice firm. "Teach me."
Galen nodded, his expression grim. "Good. But remember, Ethan, the Void Art is not a weapon—it is a force of nature. You must learn to harness it, or it will break you."
Ethan nodded, the weight of Galen's words settling on his shoulders. He had no choice now. The journey ahead was uncertain, and the power within him was still wild and untamed. But one thing was clear: if he wanted to survive, he had to master it—before it consumed him.
