Chapter 36 - Counter-Espionage

Kaizer didn't need to look around to see that the area around this stele was filled with people, especially family and friends with morose expressions. More than seven mothers had long broken down and were crying at the foot of the stele, wondering why their darling children, who had just been causing trouble a few days ago, were now gone.

Even more painful were the wives with children who dumbly stared at the name of the male teachers who died, wondering how they were going to continue. A teaching job at the cushy Summit Hill University was something that afforded them a comfortable lifestyle in Alpha City, but with the breadwinner gone…

Kaizer felt a coldness in his heart. He didn't blame himself for the outcome even though the attack was launched because of him, because he wasn't the type of person to take unnecessary burdens onto himself.

The reason he felt cold was because glimpsing the other side of the attack, he could begin to understand the darkness of the esper world. Those three espers did not have any hesitation nor moroseness about the effects of the attack they launched, only caring about Kaizer.

Carla, who attacked him the first time, did not care that he was a harmless young man seeking love and only thought of how to devour him without leaving any bones behind to satisfy her craving.

Granted, these were undoubtedly Dark Espers so they didn't represent the entirety of the esper world. The 'Light' Espers should be much better, and hopefully, the faction his father could find for him and Rina would be more… ethical... than those he had encountered so far.

Hm?

Kaizer almost frowned but withheld his expression. He detected a strange presence within the range of his psychic domain, watching the proceedings going on here with near hawkish eyes. The presence had not been there when he arrived but came just now when he was here, so its target was obvious.

The method of concealment was also very inconspicuous, acting as a mourner at another grave while depositing flowers and talking to himself, but the words were gibberish from what Kaizer could tell. What had not changed though, were those pair of brown eyes that had locked onto his side profile without moving an inch.

Kaizer remained in silent contemplation for another minute or two before shaking his head with apparent sadness and walking back to his car. He planned to go to the church service to pray for the souls of the departed after this, but this stalker had changed his mind.

Kaizer seemed to walk aimlessly, heading towards the cemetery's reception area where there was a bathroom one could use in case of an emergency. The stalker followed him indiscreetly as well, seemingly like he was about to walk out of the cemetery.

The stalker did not enter the reception building. He was not an amateur at tracking and was already beginning to think of retreating because no matter how good Kaizer thought he was, he was not training in espionage and gave off tells that he was somehow aware.

Him suddenly going into this building seemed like he was trying to lure him into a trap to get close, so the one monitoring him rather stayed even further away, making sure to watch the exits of the building closely. He also tried to pay attention to his surroundings to prevent anyone from getting the jump on him.

Unfortunately, it clearly came to naught as he suddenly felt a hand placed on his left shoulder.

"Don't move and I won't kill you." Kaizer said menacingly and slowly.

Of course, there was no one who had power that wasn't confident in themselves and completely willing to leave themselves in the mercy of others, so the fellow immediately displayed a ferocious expression under his disguise and struggled to escape.

However, he grunted in pain when Kaizer pressed down slightly, the weight of the telekinetic power locking the fellow's body in place like a car had been thrown on his back. As such, the stalker could only sweat slightly as a hint of fear engulfed his heart, not understanding how this young man could be so strong.

"Who are you and what do you want with me?" Kaizer asked coldly, his hand squeezing the stalker's shoulder tightly.

The man remained silent, but Kaizer's eyes narrowed

'The officials, huh? They had long suspected me and were lightly monitoring me, but after miraculously surviving the university attack, they knew something was wrong with me.' Kaizer thought to himself.

It may have been two days of training, but his increased base psychic power due to the killing increased his ability by no small amount. Along with his focused telepathic training, plucking out information from others was now smoother, and he would soon reach the stage where he could perform the famous 'soul reading' without having to use prompts.

"You won't talk? You must be a trained operative then, and I can think of only two factions who are watching me. One is that dark esper organization that launched the attack and the other must be the government-related authorities." Kaizer said with conviction, causing the heart of the stalker to tremble slightly, but he still remained silent.

"No problem. If you were with the government, you'd only have to report your identity and a law-abiding citizen like me would let you go. Since you don't, it means you are with the dark espers and probably want to harm me and my family, so you have one last chance to say your final words before I kill you." Kaizer continued coldly, increasing the pressure on the stalker.

Even though he could feel death coming, the stalker still refused to talk, but Kaizer could sense his fear and despair. In his last moments, the fellow thought about his unborn child with his female colleague in the official faction with whom he was having a secret relationship with.

"Enough, Young Master Lunin. You have successfully dragged us out already."

A sturdy old man's voice came from behind, revealing a hunchbacked old man with crimson red hair and a long red beard that reached his waist. He wore conspicuous red colors for a robe and was accompanied by seven tough-looking men in suits with holstered weapons.

Seeing him, the stalker was thoroughly relieved and almost slumped down when Kaizer eventually released his telekinetic hold. The young man retained his frown as he casually patted down his expensive wear and glanced straight at the old man.

"Greetings, I am Kaizer Lunin of the Lunin family. May I have the honor of knowing your esteemed name, elder?" Kaizer asked with a gentlemanly bow, showing the extreme of etiquette.

The old man stroked his beard, which lit up with flames with each stroke. "You are a good young man, able to sneak up on our operative without any of us noticing. How did you accomplish this?"

The seven operatives behind the old man felt sweat form on their foreheads, lamenting that their Section Head was as brash as always. How could you just ask someone about their methods and powers upon first meeting without even giving your name in response to their polite request?

Kaizer himself smiled and responded casually. "I won't tell you, so please state your purpose for stalking me lest I sue you in court."
