Chapter 1 - Project Arthur

In a conference room, a group of people sat in a half circle looking at a board. On the board, there were eight different files spread out. Eight files of eight kids.

By the board stood a large man wearing a suit. He had an angry expression, though by the looks of it, he always had that look. With a straightforward tone,e he began the presentation. "I'll get to the point. It is my team's job to find extraordinary talents in the world and try to recruit those people to solve difficult problems. Recently, the bureau has tasked us with finding not just trained talents but raw talents as well. After our long search, we have found eight candidates that may fit the bill. The ages and talents vary greatly between these individuals but overall they are our best candidates. Any questions before I move on?"

A woman in a blue blazer stood up. "Would you please tell us that age range, there do appear to be children on there."

"As you pointed out, yes out of the eight, five are under the age of eighteen, but we didn't want to rule out anyone seeing at our limited selection. The oldest of the bunch is twenty-three and the oldest is fourteen. Any other question before I continue with the actual profiles."

When no one answered the man continued, "Thank you. Let's start with the oldest." he pointed to a picture of an adult Korean woman from what seemed to be from a security camera. "Malissa Farsh, twenty-three-year-old female. This is the most recent picture we have of her since she dropped off the grid five years ago. However, before disappearing she was an conartist and actor. She seemed to care very little for the money however as she would set up clues for police to eventually find a large portion of the money and goods she stole. She was known for conning illegal or immoral corporations and then putting evidence for their crimes inside of her clues. She is smart, manipulative and resourceful. We do not know her current location but she is simply too talented to not put on this list."

Then he pointed to a black-haired man smiling wildly in a mug shot."Next, we have Tristen Ronson, a twenty-year-old male. He has been in and out of jail since the age of around thirteen with his longest time not being incarcerated since then being eighteen months in which in that time he managed to hack into the L's navigational system and almost killed twenty-seven passengers. Before that, however, he was stopped by the next person on this list. He has been in prison ever since then for domestic terrorism. He is an expert hacker and cryptographer who shows little to no care for other people's well-being. As long as there is a challenge and he can cause as much chaos as possible he. Although unpredictable and deserves to be in prison tell he dies as he is a sociopathic maniac he is on this list because as long as we promise him that he can cause trouble for our enemies he will cooperate. If you decide he is worth using then he will be under constant surveillance and will be shot on sight if he causes any problems."

The man in the suit moved to a picture of a man with glasses who looked like he had been dipped in bleach, with red eyes squinting at the camera. "This is Stephen Fischer age nineteen. If you could not tell Stephen suffers from albinism. His body produces little to no melanin leaving his skin and hair almost white. It also causes him to be very sensitive to most light so he lives in an apartment with a red light filter over all light sources. As I said he is the one who caught Tritsen as he has some of the best deduction skills I have ever run into, I personally have kept my eye on Stephen for quite some time and have recruited him for multiple jobs in the past. He currently works as a PI and is commonly hired by companies to track down things like insider trading and embezzlement. Interestingly enough he has found multiple of Marissa's stashes. He has already agreed to join any task force I ask him to and is already trying to track down those on this list whose whereabouts are still unknown."

The rest of the meeting went very similar with Naomi and John Turner, twins with large amounts of experience in mixed martial arts, and eventually ending with Gram Moore, an extremely self-righteous teen who creates internet viruses that destroy corrupt sites, and steal money from companies, that money in turn finds its way to charities and research funds. Most of these kids had horrible lives in many ways with Gram being in protective custody after his parents tried to drown him at the age of nine.

After reciting each of the profiles the man presenting then rearranged the files into four sections. He put Gram Moore and Stephen Fischer into one group and labeled it "in custody and will corporate". Next, he put Jacob Martinas, and Annabell Marks into a category that said "location unknown and likely to corporate". He then put Tristen Ronson and the twins together into a category saying "In custody and unlikely to cooperate". Lastly, he put Marissa Farsh by herself and put under it, "location unknown and unlikely to corporate".

"If brought together, even just a few of them they would be a force to reckon with. They will be brought in as consultants, and each member will be psychologically evaluated before and after each mission in order to maintain stability."

After the end of this speech, a man at the end of the table stood up. He was the most disheveled person in the room, he wore a stained T-shirt with a dirty aviator jacket over unzipped. The whole ensemble was matched with unkempt scruff and a New York Yankees baseball hat. However, when he spoke he did so with a to-the-point question. "Are you aware that a similar team you're suggesting was already suggested some time ago, under the name Project Arthur?"

"Yes an-"

"And do you know what happened to those kids?"

"Yes."

"And can you share that information with the room?"

The presenter hesitated, but resigned he responded. "They all died." Now, with much less confidence, he continued, "So, is that a no?"

Seriously, the disheveled man walked up to the man, putting a hand on his shoulder. "I'll be taking over this project. You now work for me."

The idea of the most unprofessional man in the room patronizing him surprised him that he didn't quite expect those words. "What?"

"You heard me, I am now your boss. This is now my project." He then looked towards the room at large. "Anyone have a problem with that?"

When no one spoke out, the scruffy man started taking again. "Okay, that's the end of that." He walked out of the room.
