Chapter 65 - Chapter 63: The Unraveling

Mia stood in front of her office window, staring out at the sprawling city below. The lights twinkled like a sea of stars, each one a silent witness to the chaos that had enveloped her life. Everything had changed in the past few weeks. The battle against Sophie had been long and brutal, but they were finally reaching the tipping point. Mia could feel it in her bones—the calm before the storm.

Her phone buzzed on her desk, snapping her from her thoughts. The number on the screen was unfamiliar, but her gut told her it was important. With a sense of foreboding, Mia answered the call.

"Mia," Leo's voice was low and urgent. "We've got a problem."

Mia's stomach dropped. "What's happened?"

"There's a leak," Leo said, his voice tight with frustration. "Someone from our team has been feeding information to Sophie. They've been tracking our every move."

Mia's blood ran cold. "Who?"

"I don't know yet," Leo replied. "But it's bad. Whoever it is has access to everything. They know what we've been planning. They know about Anton's involvement, the files… everything."

Mia gripped the edge of her desk, her knuckles turning white. "How long has this been going on?"

"Long enough that Sophie has been preparing her counterattack. She's got her own network digging into us, trying to turn the tables."

Mia's mind raced as she processed the information. This was a nightmare. If they couldn't find the leak soon, everything they had worked for would be destroyed. The files they had worked so hard to uncover, the trust they had built within their team—everything could unravel in an instant.

"Where do we start?" Mia asked, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside her.

Leo exhaled slowly. "We need to trace the leaks. We can't afford to waste time. I've already had some of the team go over the communications logs, but we'll need your help. We need to pinpoint who had access to Anton's operation and when."

"I'll get to work on it," Mia said, already feeling the weight of the task ahead. "Keep me updated."

As the call ended, Mia's mind was already working through the next steps. This was no longer just about Sophie. It was about someone on the inside, someone who had been playing both sides. The fact that the leak had gone unnoticed for so long made Mia uneasy. She knew that trust, once broken, was nearly impossible to rebuild.

---

The next few hours passed in a blur of frantic activity. Mia worked alongside Leo and the rest of their team to sift through every communication, every email, every piece of data they had gathered over the past few months. The pressure was mounting, and Mia could feel the tension in the air as they pieced together the puzzle.

Finally, as the sun began to set, Mia's eyes landed on something—an email, sent from a company address they had long since dismissed. The email was innocuous on the surface, a simple message about an upcoming meeting, but Mia's instincts told her it was more than that.

She clicked on the link attached to the email, and what she found made her blood run cold. It was an encrypted message, sent to an unknown recipient. The contents of the message were encrypted as well, but the header was unmistakable. It was from one of their own team members—a name Mia knew all too well.

"Rachael," Mia muttered under her breath. Rachael was one of their most trusted associates, someone Mia had worked with for years. How could she have betrayed them?

Mia's mind raced as she thought through the implications. If Rachael had been the one leaking information to Sophie, it would explain how Sophie had been one step ahead. Rachael had access to everything—she had been with the team from the start, and her role had been crucial in gathering information about Sophie's operations. But now, Mia realized, that same access had been used against them.

She wasted no time. Picking up her phone, she dialed Leo's number. "We've got a lead," she said, her voice tight with urgency. "It's Rachael."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Are you sure?"

"I'm positive," Mia replied. "She's been leaking information to Sophie. I found an encrypted message from her, sent to an unknown recipient. It's all connected."

Leo cursed under his breath. "That complicates things. She's been with us for so long. Are you sure we can trust the evidence?"

"I don't have all the answers yet," Mia admitted, "but this is the lead we need. We have to confront her."

---

Rachael's office was eerily quiet when Mia arrived. She had been working late, as usual, but there was a tension in the air that Mia couldn't ignore. The door was ajar, and as Mia stepped inside, she saw Rachael sitting at her desk, her back to the door.

"Rachael," Mia's voice was cold, sharper than she intended.

Rachael jumped at the sound of Mia's voice, turning around quickly. There was a brief flash of panic in her eyes, but it was quickly masked by a calm expression. "Mia," she said, her voice steady. "What are you doing here?"

"I know what you've been doing," Mia replied, her tone unwavering. "You've been feeding information to Sophie."

Rachael's face paled, and for a moment, Mia thought she saw guilt flicker in her eyes. But it was gone just as quickly, replaced by a steely calm. "I don't know what you're talking about," Rachael said, her voice cool.

Mia stepped closer, holding up her phone. "I have the evidence. The encrypted message you sent to Sophie's network. You've been sabotaging us, Rachael."

Rachael's eyes flickered, and for a split second, Mia saw something that resembled fear. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by a cold, calculating gaze. "You don't understand, Mia," she said quietly. "I had no choice."

Mia frowned, confused. "No choice? What are you talking about?"

Rachael stood up slowly, her posture defensive. "Sophie had something on me. Something that could destroy everything. My family... my career. I didn't want to do it, but I didn't have a choice. She threatened me."

Mia's heart sank as she processed Rachael's words. She had been forced into this? But why hadn't she come to Mia, confided in her? They were a team.

"Why didn't you come to me?" Mia asked, her voice softening slightly. "We could have figured something out."

"I didn't trust anyone," Rachael admitted, her voice strained. "Not even you. Sophie was too powerful. I thought if I just played along, I could protect myself. But now… now I've made everything worse."

Mia stood in silence, her mind whirling. Rachael wasn't the enemy she had imagined. She was a victim in her own right—caught in a web of manipulation and fear.

But that didn't change the fact that Rachael had betrayed them. And now, they were both facing the consequences.

"You're going to have to face the consequences of your actions, Rachael," Mia said, her voice heavy with regret. "But I'll help you. We'll figure this out together."

Rachael looked up at Mia, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and gratitude. "You'll help me?"

Mia nodded. "I'll do what I can. But you have to come clean. No more lies. No more games."

Rachael hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Okay. I'll do it."

Mia exhaled deeply, knowing that this was only the beginning of a much bigger battle. Sophie was still out there, and the fight was far from over. But for the first time in a long while, Mia felt a glimmer of hope. With Rachael's confession, they had a chance to turn the tide. The truth was on their side, and they would stop at nothing to make sure it was exposed.
