Chapter 39 - Chapter Thirty-Seven: Unspoken Truths

The soft morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the bedroom. Mia stretched lazily in bed, the feeling of peace settling deep within her chest. For the first time in a long while, she woke up without the heaviness of the past weighing on her. Adrian, lying next to her, was still fast asleep, his breath steady and calm.

She didn't want to wake him, not yet. He had been working late the past few nights, and she knew he needed rest. But Mia couldn't help but think of the conversation they had last night—about the future, about the trip they were planning, and about everything they had yet to explore together. There was something about that conversation that made her heart swell with hope.

Sliding out of bed carefully, she tiptoed to the kitchen to make him his favorite breakfast—pancakes and coffee. She hadn't done something like this in a while, and the idea of surprising him made her smile. As the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, she felt a sense of calm and anticipation. Life, for the first time in years, felt simple again.

She heard the familiar sound of Adrian's footsteps in the hallway just as she was setting the table. She turned toward the door, her heart skipping a beat as he entered, still in his pajamas, a sleepy smile on his face.

"Good morning, beautiful," he said, his voice low but warm. "You're up early."

Mia returned the smile. "I thought I'd surprise you. I know you've been working a lot lately, so I figured breakfast in bed was the least I could do."

Adrian chuckled softly, moving to her side and wrapping his arms around her waist. "You didn't have to do that, but I'm glad you did." He kissed her cheek, lingering for a moment as if savoring the warmth between them.

As they sat down to eat, the conversation shifted from their plans for the trip to more personal things—the future, their dreams, the kind of life they wanted to build. Mia found herself speaking more openly than she ever had before. There was no hesitation, no fear of judgment. She was no longer holding back, and neither was Adrian. They talked about everything—from the little things that made them laugh to the deep-rooted fears they both had, fears of failure, of change, of the unknown.

The discussion was easy, effortless. There was no tension in the air, no unspoken words lingering between them. But as they finished breakfast and Adrian helped clear the table, Mia's mind wandered back to the meeting with Liam. There was something still unresolved there, something she couldn't shake. The closure she had sought wasn't as complete as she'd hoped.

Adrian caught the faraway look in her eyes as he washed the dishes. "Something on your mind?" he asked gently, turning toward her.

Mia hesitated for a moment, her heart racing slightly as she considered how to phrase her thoughts. She had told Adrian about the meeting, about the closure, but there was still an unspoken truth between them. One that she knew she had to share.

"It's… it's about Liam," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "The truth is, I'm not sure I've fully forgiven him. I thought I had, but when I saw him again, when I heard his apology, there was something inside me that hesitated. I don't know if it's because of the years of hurt or because of the life we could have had… but I still feel a piece of that pain."

Adrian set the dish down, his gaze focused entirely on her. His expression softened, and he stepped closer, wiping his hands on the towel. "You don't have to have it all figured out, Mia. You've been through a lot. And sometimes, forgiveness isn't as simple as saying the words. It's a process. It takes time."

Mia nodded, her throat tight. "I know, but I want to be completely free of it. I don't want that part of me to linger in our lives. I want to let go of it fully. For us."

Adrian took her hands in his, his grip firm and comforting. "And you will. I'm not going anywhere, Mia. Whatever happens, we'll work through it together. I don't expect you to have everything sorted out overnight. And if you need time, I'll give you that time."

His words were exactly what she needed to hear. She didn't have to rush through the healing process. Adrian understood her in ways she hadn't even realized. His patience, his kindness, his willingness to let her work through things on her own terms—it was everything she had needed from the start.

"I'm scared, Adrian," Mia admitted, her voice trembling. "Scared that I'll never fully heal, that the past will always follow me. I don't want it to keep affecting us. I want to be able to be the best partner I can be for you."

Adrian cupped her face, his touch gentle but unwavering. "Mia, you already are. You're here, with me, doing everything you can to heal. That's all I need. And we'll get through this. One day at a time. Together."

The weight in Mia's chest began to lift. She could feel the warmth of his love surrounding her, and for the first time in a long while, she truly believed that they could overcome anything. Together.

As the morning wore on, they made plans for their vacation, deciding on a quiet beach town where they could disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other. The idea of just the two of them, away from the pressures of life, filled Mia with excitement and peace.

But deep inside, she knew that the real journey wasn't about the destination. It was about the road they were walking together. The healing, the growth, the unspoken promises they had made to each other. It was about facing the unhealed parts of themselves and embracing the future, no matter how uncertain it might be.

That afternoon, as they stood on their balcony, watching the sun begin to dip below the horizon, Mia leaned her head against Adrian's shoulder. He wrapped his arm around her, holding her close.

"We'll figure it out," he murmured, his voice warm in the evening air. "I know we will."

Mia smiled softly, her heart finally at peace. "Together."

And for the first time in a long time, she believed it.
