Chapter 3 - Chapter One: Three Years Later

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Mia Williams adjusted her apron behind the counter of her favorite café, Sunrise Beans. The cozy little shop had become her sanctuary, a place where she could keep her mind busy and her heart at peace. Her life here was simple and predictable, a far cry from the chaos she had left behind three years ago.

She stole a glance at the play area in the corner, where her twin boys, Leo and Liam, were busily stacking colorful blocks into what could generously be called towers. They were giggling, their sweet voices carrying over the quiet hum of the café.

"Mama, look!" Liam called, his dark hair falling into his eyes as he held up a precarious stack of blocks, his small chest puffed out with pride.

"That's amazing, sweetheart!" Mia replied, her voice warm and full of encouragement. She quickly wiped her hands on a clean rag and moved closer to admire his handiwork. Leo, always the more competitive one, immediately began stacking his own blocks higher. His little brow furrowed in determination, drawing a soft laugh from Mia.

They were her entire world. Everything she had done, every decision she had made, had been for them. No one would take that away from her.

But fate, as always, had other plans.

The soft chime of the café door opening barely registered in Mia's mind at first. It was a sound she heard a hundred times a day, blending into the background noise of brewing coffee and murmured conversations. But then came the heavy, measured footsteps against the wooden floor. They were deliberate, commanding, and somehow familiar.

Mia glanced up, and her breath hitched in her throat.

Adrian Blackwood.

Her hands froze mid-wipe, the rag slipping from her grasp as her heart thundered in her chest. Adrian stood there, just inside the door, surveying the café with a presence that seemed to shrink the room around him. He was taller than she remembered, or maybe it was the sheer force of his presence that made him seem larger. His impeccably tailored navy suit hugged his broad shoulders, and his icy blue eyes, so piercing, so unmistakable, were scanning the room like a hawk searching for prey.

And then his gaze locked onto hers.

For a moment, the world around Mia seemed to fall away. The café's soft buzz of conversation and the clatter of dishes faded into nothingness. All she could hear was the pounding of her own heartbeat as Adrian's expression shifted. Recognition. Shock. And then something darker, something that made her knees weak.

"Mia," Adrian said, his deep, baritone voice cutting through the air like a blade. It wasn't a question. It was a statement, heavy with meaning.

Mia's throat tightened, and she struggled to find her voice. "Adrian... what are you doing here?" she managed, though her words came out barely above a whisper.

Adrian didn't respond immediately. His gaze shifted, drifting past her to the play area behind her. Mia's stomach dropped as she followed his line of sight.

Leo and Liam were still engrossed in their game, blissfully unaware of the man staring at them. Adrian's eyes narrowed as he took in the sight of the two little boys, their dark hair identical to his own, their sharp features too familiar to ignore. And then his gaze landed on their eyes, two pairs of piercing blue eyes that mirrored his so perfectly it was like looking into a younger version of himself.

Mia instinctively stepped forward, positioning herself between Adrian and her children. "Adrian," she said firmly, her voice trembling just slightly, "not here."

His jaw tightened, the muscles flexing as he finally looked back at her. "Are they...?" His voice trailed off, but the weight of his unfinished question hung heavily in the air.

"Adrian, please," she said softly, her eyes pleading with him. "Not here."

For a long moment, he didn't move. His eyes burned into hers, a storm of emotions swirling within them, anger, confusion, disbelief. Finally, he let out a slow, measured breath and nodded once.

"Fine," he said, his tone low but firm. "But we're not leaving this unresolved, Mia. Not this time."

She nodded hesitantly, feeling the walls of her carefully constructed life beginning to crumble. "After my shift," she said quietly.

Adrian's gaze lingered on her for a moment longer before he turned and walked out of the café, his departure marked by the soft chime of the door. Mia watched him go, her legs feeling like jelly beneath her.

She turned back toward the play area, her eyes falling on her boys. They were arguing now, their voices rising as they debated whose tower was taller. Mia forced a smile as she walked over to them, kneeling down to their level.

"Hey, guys, let's use our inside voices, okay?" she said gently, smoothing down Leo's unruly hair.

"Mommy, can we have pancakes now?" Liam asked, his big blue eyes wide with hope.

"Of course," Mia said, her voice catching slightly. She glanced toward the café window, half-expecting to see Adrian standing outside, watching her. But the sidewalk was empty.

As she stood up and walked back to the counter, Mia's hands trembled slightly. Adrian Blackwood was back in her life, and she had no idea how she was going to keep the fragile world she had built from shattering around her.
