Sitting on a bench a pair of boys talked while looking out into the distance, "So where are you working now?" Adam asked.
With a tired sigh Victor responded, "A factory that I don't have to think, but it pays decently."
"Shoot! Let me join! I just got this accountant job and can't stand the numbers. I liked math, but all I do is paperwork and now even the math seems monotonous." Adam half complained half joked.
"I can recommend you, all you need is to carry 50 lbs bags half the time and the rest is just set up. I can stay until you join." Victor said with a shrug.
Hearing was something up Adam asked, "Until I join? Are you going to quit?"
"Yeah, I am literally making up math problems in my head just to pass the time, but I think I am reaching my limit being so bored." Victor spoke with a lethargic tone.
Adam chuckled as he spoke, "You were always the smartest in the class, but with the way you never tried in any class, I thought you loved turning off your brain."
Victor almost had a dead voice as he remembered school, "It gets hard to focus on something when you are bored out of your mind."
"Then could you have not graduated early?" Adam asked with a curious tone.
"We talked about this. There are too many blocks to graduate easily. At least in our high school."
Seeming to remember something Adam joked, "I thought it was because you liked to write witchcraft in your notebook."
Victor was not into it as he spoke without emotion, "It was math equations."
"Says the guy who got a D in math."
"*sigh* Yeah... I wish I tried harder to leave early..."
A quiet silence fell over the pair as they continued to look off into the distance...
"So," Interrupting the silence, Adam asked, "What do you want to do now?"
"I wish I could become an inventor... Something where I have the power to control what I do..."
"And why don't you?"
Victor turned to his friend. His only friend after he graduated. And asked, "Do you think I am rich?"
"Huh?" Confused Adam also turned to his friend. "What do you mean?"
"Having an idea is easy. Putting it into practice is hard. I need money to build anything I want, even then I need an audience to sell to. If I can't connect to anyone anyway I won't make money and then I am just bankrupt with nothing but a hunk of junk that won't help my current situation. Als-"
"So what?" Interrupting Victor Adam spoke with a firm tone.
"Huh?" This time it was Victor's time to be surprised.
"Why can't you create something that would help you even as you are now. Or make something that is so insane that everyone wants it simply by the fact that it is so unique! You are so smart you are stupid!
You see all the problems so you don't try, but why not take a loan. Move back in with your parents or sibling. Make it so even if it fails for a few years you can slowly earn back that money without too much worry within a few years!"
"But-"
"NO!" Adam yelled as he grabbed Victor's arm. "There is a reason people say reach for the moon so even if you fall you fall to the stars. You told me that. I went to college because of you!..." Adam sighed as he stood up and spoke, "I am going home. You better not be as stupid as me and quit halfway. Even if you do at least do what I am going to do."
"What are you going to do?"
"Try again. I wanted to meet up to tell you I enrolled into classes with more careful planning. I am working towards my dream, so why don't you." With that Adam didn't wait for an answer but simply walked away.
Victor felt speechless as he watched Adam walk away... After losing him he looked back into the distance while mumbling, "If I-... No... When I get a loan what should I even build? Could anything I made up even be useful to me?... What could shock the world... What would change the current system as we know it... No not that... no. no. no. no. no... yes. YES!"
Jumping up from his seat Victor felt as if the entire world just clicked. Taking out his phone he sent a message to Adam with a simple, 'thank you'
After that he called his sister. She lived in a rural area renting out a trailer with plenty of room. He was on great terms with her after helping her out many times, so it wasn't a problem.
Then he called the bank and made an appointment. After that, he began looking up prices for every part he would need. Without hesitation, he began placing everything he needed into a list of where he would by and what he would order to be shipped.
Then, he called his landlord to move out. He was behind on his rent payment anyways. He only needed to pay last month and be done with it. After that, he began packing.
The next day he went to the bank and after a long talk got approved for a 6,000 dollar loan. To make money and to make it so he didn't ruin himself he made sure to take out a loan twice times the price of all the materials and tools he expected. He didn't even consider the two thousand he had saved for emergencies.
To make sure he would get credit for his invention he needed to patent it or simply hope no one understands it. Even then, if he wants to make great money he needs mass production, so he started making a clear plan for each part of his invention.
Since this wasn't the only thing he wanted to build he focused on making plans for everything he wanted to work on on first. These were all things that could be built for under 1,000 dollars and even if he couldn't gain a market they would be good for basic protection or daily life.
After a week the loan got finalized and he received the money. So then he started his shopping spree. This included things like a welder and things to bend thin metals with some level of precision.
After he unpacked and prepared everything he got a call. It was from work again. He forgot to quit, but just as the last six calls he ignored it. Instead, he put his phone on silent as he got prepared to start his first world-shaking invention.
The design looked exactly like... a watch?
