Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: Shadows Beneath the Spotlight

Eesha and Ava arrived home looking exhausted, their footsteps heavy as they walked through the door.Hana glanced up from her books, surprised. "You two are back early! I thought you'd be out all night."Ava, pouting and throwing her bag onto the couch, sighed. "I don't know what happened, but they cut the concert short. We didn't even get to enjoy it properly."Eesha, her face unusually pale and eyes distant, muttered, "I'm going to bed." Without waiting for any response, she disappeared down the hall to her room, shutting the door quietly but firmly.Hana, furrowing her brows in confusion, looked at Ava. "What's with her? Did you screw up again?"Ava, already halfway through a glass of water, rolled her eyes. "Not this time, Hana. Actually, she was having fun for once. But the second they canceled the concert, she was... different. She looked at me, dead serious, and said, 'Ava, we need to leave.' I didn't ask questions. She seemed... unsettled." Ava yawned, the exhaustion catching up with her. "Anyway, I'm beat too. Goodnight, Hana."Hana watched as Ava disappeared into her room, the confusion lingering. Something was off. She turned back to her work, but the unease gnawed at her thoughts. What had happened tonight?Meanwhile, across the city, tension filled the air in a lavish office at the headquarters of the boy band's management company. Manager Joseph stood in front of the company's director, his nerves barely under control.Director, his voice icy: "Joseph, whatever happened tonight cannot reach the press. If word gets out, this will be an unprecedented disaster for us. The media will rip us apart."Joseph's hands trembled slightly. He'd seen too much tonight. "But sir, I don't think it was just an accident. This was deliberate—someone orchestrated it. Whoever it was, they were trying to kill our boys. If the parents find out..."The Director's eyes narrowed, his expression as cold as his words. "I'm aware, Joseph. But this situation is under control. Leave it to me. Your job is to keep the boys calm and out of the way."Joseph swallowed hard, nodding. "Understood, sir."In the boys' penthouse suite, silence hung heavy as the five band members sat scattered around the living room, still processing what had happened that night. The tension was suffocating.Jake finally broke the silence, his voice low and serious. "If that girl hadn't shown up when she did, Kai and I would be dead. I don't even want to think about what would've happened to the rest of us."Ethan, leaning forward, frowned. "Wait—what girl? What are you talking about?"Ren looked confused. "Yeah, Jake. I didn't see any girl."Liam, sitting at the edge of his seat, shook his head. "Neither did I."Jake ran his hand through his hair, his frustration building. "Of course, you didn't. It was all chaos back there, with the smoke and the alarms going off. But she was there. She's the reason we're all still alive."Liam's eyes narrowed. "Who was she? Did you recognize her?"Jake hesitated, his memory foggy. "No, she had a mask on. After that... I couldn't find her. She just vanished."Ren, intrigued, turned to Kai. "Kai, you were there. Do you know anything about her? Was she with the crew?"Kai, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, shook his head. "No... she wasn't with the staff."Ethan raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "How do you know that, huh? You seem awfully sure."Kai's voice hardened, his expression troubled. "It was her voice... and her eyes." His words trailed off as he avoided eye contact.Ethan snickered, nudging him. "Her *voice* and *eyes*, huh? Sounds like someone's a little smitten."Kai snapped, his frustration boiling over. "I don't know, alright?" His outburst silenced the room, the tension palpable.Liam, trying to steer the conversation back, spoke up. "Maybe she was just a fan who got backstage somehow. With all the chaos, it wouldn't be that hard to sneak in."Ren nodded thoughtfully. "Could be. Maybe she was there just to watch the concert, but then saw what was happening and tried to help."Ren leaned back, his curiosity piqued. "Whoever she is, we owe her our lives. I want to find her."Ethan grinned. "Me too. I've got to thank her personally. Maybe give her a little gift for saving someone as handsome as me."Kai, his voice cutting through the moment, spoke coldly. "Can we stop talking about her?"You're all missing the point. This wasn't an accident." His eyes darkened as he stared at the floor. "Someone wanted us dead tonight."The room fell into stunned silence. The weight of Kai's words hit hard.Ethan, his playful demeanor fading, looked at Kai seriously. "Why would anyone want to kill us? We haven't done anything wrong. We've got millions of fans."Liam spoke slowly, the realization dawning on him. "Maybe it's not about *us* directly. It could be our families... or the company. We're all tied to some pretty powerful people."Kai nodded, his voice steady. "Exactly. Someone has a grudge. This wasn't random."Ren's voice was thoughtful, but edged with tension. "Or maybe someone's just jealous of our success. We've had enemies before."Liam added, "That's true. We've dealt with stalkers and obsessed fans before, but this feels... different."Jake tried to lighten the mood, though even he couldn't shake the unease. "You guys are blowing this out of proportion."The others turned to him, their expressions serious.Jake, throwing his hands up defensively, muttered under his breath. "Alright, alright. I get it. This is serious."As the boys sat in their growing silence, each lost in thought, the same unsettling realization settled in—they were in real danger. And tonight was only the beginning. The silence in the room was deafening as Manager Joseph entered, his face composed but his eyes betraying a hint of nervousness.Joseph: "Alright, boys, don't worry about what happened. It was just an accident." His voice was steady, but his words felt rehearsed. "There was a technical malfunction from the previous concert, something the team missed when setting up the stage. It's our fault. We should've double-checked, but it's been a hectic schedule. Just take it easy now. Everything's under control."He paused, eyes darting across the room, gauging their reactions.Jake leaned back in his chair with a smirk, arms folded. "See? I told you. Just a random incident, and you all went off the deep end for no reason."Liam hesitated, though. "Maybe... we are overthinking it." He rubbed his neck as though trying to shake off the unease. "We should get some rest. We've got a lot coming up."Ethan wasn't convinced. His jaw clenched as he fixed Joseph with a sharp look. "But *how* could something like this happen, Joseph? How could you miss something so important? People could've died out there. We could've died."Ren nodded in agreement, his arms crossed tightly. "What if fans had gotten hurt? This wasn't a small error. You should've been more careful."Joseph's shoulders sagged under their accusations. He forced a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I understand, boys, and believe me, we are deeply ashamed. We were overwhelmed with the back-to-back concerts, but I swear this won't happen again. Next time, everything will be checked thoroughly. I promise you." He shifted uncomfortably, as though eager to escape the conversation. "Now, get some sleep. Focus on what you do best, and leave the rest to us. Good night."The boys exchanged quiet "Good nights" as Joseph quickly left the room, his hurried steps echoing down the hallway. But the tension in the air lingered long after he was gone. One by one, they headed to their rooms. But Kai... Kai couldn't sleep. He lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, the night's events replaying in his mind over and over. Something didn't sit right with him.He sat up abruptly, heart racing. "*Was* it really an accident?" He whispered to himself, his voice barely audible. "*Or was it something more?*"A soft knock at his door broke the stillness. His pulse quickened as he approached the door cautiously. Opening it, he found Liam standing there, his expression unreadable.Kai: "Liam? What are you doing here so late?"Liam leaned against the doorframe, his eyes searching Kai's face. "I noticed your light was still on. You okay?"Kai hesitated before responding, lowering his voice as though the walls might have ears. "I can't shake the feeling that Manager Joseph wasn't telling us everything. Something's off."Liam raised an eyebrow but shrugged. "You're overthinking it. Why would Joseph lie? He's been with us for years. Sure, he seemed a little off tonight, but that could just be stress. We've been pushing hard, and maybe the pressure's getting to him too. You're tired, man. Go to bed."Kai looked down, his mind swirling with doubt. "I don't know, Liam. When Joseph was talking, it felt like he was hiding something... like there was more he wasn't telling us."Liam chuckled softly, though there was no humor in his eyes. "Kai, you're exhausted. We've got a concert next week and need to focus on that. Leave the investigating to the professionals. This isn't our problem." He patted Kai on the shoulder. "Get some rest, okay?"Kai nodded reluctantly. "Yeah, I guess."Liam turned to leave, but before he walked out, he paused at the door, casting a final glance back. "Good night, Kai. Don't let this eat at you. We've got bigger things to worry about."As soon as the door clicked shut, Kai let out a long breath, but the unease inside him only grew. He got up and walked over to the window, staring out into the night.Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught his eye. Someone was standing near the gate of the hotel—a figure, cloaked in shadow, watching from a distance. His heart thudded in his chest as he squinted to get a better look, but just as quickly as they appeared, the figure vanished into the darkness.Kai's hands tightened into fists. Something was wrong. And he wasn't going to rest until he figured out what it was.
