Chapter 37 - The Dominoes Begin to Fall

The car raced through the darkened streets, its headlights carving a path through the misty night. Inside, the tension was suffocating. Sophia clutched the recorder in her lap, her knuckles white against the sleek black casing. Beside her, Liam stared out the window, his jaw clenched and his hand resting on the weapon holstered at his side. In the driver's seat, Evan's sharp eyes flicked between the road ahead and the rearview mirror, tracking the vehicles in pursuit.

"They're gaining on us," Evan said, his voice tight.

Liam turned in his seat, his eyes narrowing at the two black SUVs closing the gap. "We need to lose them before we reach the safe house."

"Working on it," Evan muttered, yanking the wheel sharply to the right. The car skidded onto a narrow alley, the tires screeching against the wet pavement.

Sophia gripped the door handle, her pulse hammering in her ears. "What happens if they catch us?"

"They won't," Liam said, his tone brooking no argument.

Evan smirked. "Not if I have anything to say about it."

He took another sharp turn, the car barreling through an industrial yard littered with abandoned equipment. The SUVs followed, their engines roaring like angry beasts. One of them clipped a rusted shipping container, but it barely slowed down.

"They're not letting up," Sophia said, panic creeping into her voice.

Liam leaned out the window, his gun aimed at the nearest SUV. "Evan, keep it steady."

Evan didn't respond, but his grip on the wheel tightened as he navigated the uneven terrain. Liam fired three shots in quick succession, shattering the SUV's windshield. The vehicle swerved, slamming into a pile of debris and coming to a grinding halt.

"One down," Liam muttered, pulling back inside.

Sophia's relief was short-lived as the second SUV accelerated, closing the distance. The back window of their car exploded in a shower of glass as bullets tore through it. She ducked instinctively, shielding the recorder with her body.

"Hold on!" Evan shouted.

The car lurched forward, speeding toward the edge of the industrial yard where a chain-link fence loomed. Sophia's eyes widened as Evan rammed through the gate, the impact jolting them in their seats.

The SUV hesitated for a moment before following, but the delay was enough. Evan veered onto a narrow back road, the dense foliage swallowing them from view.

By the time they reached the safe house, the adrenaline had begun to wear off, leaving a heavy exhaustion in its wake. The small cabin was tucked away in the woods, its unassuming exterior a stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped.

Evan killed the engine and turned to the others. "We've got maybe a few hours before they regroup. We need to plan our next move."

Liam nodded, his expression grim. "Sophia, do you still have the recorder?"

She held it up, her grip firm despite the tremor in her hands. "It's all here. Everything Jason said."

"Good," Liam said. "Now we just need to get it to someone who can use it."

Sophia frowned. "Who can we trust? Jason has connections everywhere. If we give this to the wrong person…"

Liam exchanged a glance with Evan, a silent conversation passing between them. Finally, he said, "There's a journalist I know—Margot Kane. She's been digging into Jason's operations for years. If anyone can expose him, it's her."

Evan nodded in agreement. "She's solid. But getting to her won't be easy. Jason will have every resource he has hunting us down."

"Then we'll need a decoy," Sophia said. "Something to keep him focused on the wrong target while we get this to Margot."

Liam raised an eyebrow. "You have something in mind?"

Sophia hesitated, her mind racing. "Jason's biggest weakness is his ego. If we can make him think we're planning to release the evidence publicly, he'll shift his focus to stopping that."

Evan grinned. "A fake broadcast. I like it."

The plan began to take shape as the hours ticked by. They worked in hushed tones, their voices blending with the faint hum of the generator powering the cabin. Evan set up the decoy broadcast, using an old transmitter he had stashed in the safe house.

"It'll look like we're broadcasting live," he explained. "But it's just a loop. Jason's men will waste their time chasing ghosts while we slip out the back."

Sophia nodded, her confidence growing as the pieces fell into place. "And what about Margot? How do we get to her?"

"She's staying at a hotel in the city," Liam said. "We'll take back roads and avoid main routes. If we're careful, we can get there before Jason catches on."

Evan glanced up from the transmitter, his expression serious. "There's one more thing. Once we hand over the evidence, we're out of options. This is our last shot."

Sophia met his gaze, her resolve unwavering. "Then we make it count."

The city loomed ahead like a sleeping giant, its skyscrapers piercing the pre-dawn sky. They parked a few blocks away from the hotel, opting to approach on foot to avoid drawing attention.

Sophia's heart pounded as they entered the lobby, the polished marble floors and gleaming chandeliers a stark contrast to the tension coiling in her chest.

"Room 314," Liam said, leading the way to the elevator.

The ride up was agonizingly slow, each floor they passed feeling like an eternity. When the doors finally opened, they stepped out into the hallway, their footsteps muffled by the plush carpet.

Liam knocked on the door, his hand hovering near his weapon. A moment later, it opened to reveal a woman in her late thirties with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor.

"Liam," she said, her voice tinged with surprise. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"No time to explain," he replied. "We have something you need to see."

Margot stepped aside, allowing them in. The room was modest but comfortable, a laptop and a stack of papers cluttering the small desk.

Sophia wasted no time, handing her the recorder. "This has everything. Jason's plans, his network, even his voice admitting to murder."

Margot's eyes widened as she examined the device. "If this is real…"

"It is," Liam said firmly. "But you need to act fast. Jason knows we have it. He won't stop until it's destroyed."

Margot nodded, already moving to connect the recorder to her laptop. "I'll start going through it now. If what you're saying checks out, this could be the story of the decade."

Sophia exhaled, the weight on her chest easing slightly. For the first time, it felt like they had a chance.

The victory was short-lived.

As they made their way back to the car, Liam's phone buzzed with a notification. He glanced at the screen and cursed under his breath.

"What is it?" Sophia asked.

"Jason's men," he said grimly. "They've tracked us. We need to move—now."

Evan was already scanning the street, his posture tense. "There's a black SUV parked two blocks down. Could be them."

Sophia's stomach dropped. "What do we do?"

Liam's eyes hardened. "We split up. They'll expect us to stay together. Evan, take Sophia and get her somewhere safe. I'll draw them away."

"No!" Sophia protested, her voice rising. "We're not splitting up. Not now."

Liam turned to her, his expression fierce but laced with a softness that took her off guard. "Sophia, this is the only way. If they catch us all, everything we've done will be for nothing."

Her throat tightened, but she nodded reluctantly. "Be careful."

"I will," he promised, his hand brushing hers for the briefest moment before he turned and disappeared into the shadows.

As Evan led her away, Sophia couldn't shake the feeling that the storm was far from over. The dominoes had begun to fall, but the final piece was still in Jason's hands.

For now.
