Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: Shadows in Nairobi

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across Nairobi's bustling streets. Zarah walked briskly through the city center, her bag slung over her shoulder and her phone clutched tightly in her hand. The call with Ayodele had left her both comforted and restless. There was something about the way he spoke of his work, the quiet determination in his voice—it reminded her why she'd been drawn to him in the first place.

But her own worries weren't far behind.

She turned onto a quieter street and entered a modest office building. The sign above the door read **East African Environmental Alliance** in bold, green letters. Inside, the atmosphere was a mix of controlled chaos—phones ringing, printers whirring, and colleagues exchanging hurried updates.

"Zarah!" A voice called out as she reached her desk. It was Jamila, her closest friend and fellow researcher. Jamila's forehead was creased with concern as she handed Zarah a folder. "You need to see this."

Zarah flipped it open, her eyes scanning the contents. It was a series of satellite images, each marked with dates and coordinates. Her stomach tightened as she realized what she was looking at.

"These are from the Tsavo region?" she asked, her voice low.

Jamila nodded grimly. "The illegal logging activity has escalated in the past month. They're moving deeper into protected areas, and it's not just local operations. We think there's an international network involved. If we don't act fast…"

Zarah didn't need her to finish the sentence. The devastation was already playing out in her mind—entire ecosystems wiped out, wildlife displaced, local communities stripped of their natural resources.

"We'll need more evidence," Zarah said, closing the folder. "And we'll need to make noise about this—get the media, international agencies, everyone involved."

Jamila hesitated. "There's more. I didn't want to tell you over the phone, but…" She leaned closer, lowering her voice. "We've received threats. Anonymous emails, warning us to back off. They know we're onto them."

Zarah's heart skipped a beat, but she forced herself to remain calm. "That's exactly why we can't back down," she said firmly. "If we do, they win."

Jamila nodded, though her eyes betrayed her worry. "Just… be careful, Zarah. These people aren't playing games."

Zarah didn't respond, but her resolve was clear.

That evening, Zarah sat on her balcony, the city spread out before her in a glittering tapestry of lights. A soft breeze carried the scent of jacaranda flowers, mingling with the distant hum of traffic.

She opened her laptop, intending to go over the day's data, but instead, she found herself pulling up Ayodele's number. Her finger hovered over the call button. She hesitated. Should she tell him about the threats? He had enough on his plate already, and she didn't want to burden him.

But the idea of keeping it from him didn't sit right either.

Before she could decide, her phone buzzed with a message. It was from an unknown number.

**"Stay out of Tsavo. This is your only warning."**

Zarah stared at the screen, her heart pounding. Whoever these people were, they were watching her closely. She quickly deleted the message and turned her phone off, taking a deep breath to steady herself.

The night sky above seemed endless, filled with stars that blinked down at her like distant watchers. She thought of Ayodele, of his unwavering faith in the power of science and collaboration.

And she thought of the challenges ahead—not just for her, but for both of them.
