Chapter 17 - You can’t do that.

Wait, part-time job?

Fujii Shu raised an eyebrow, feeling like he had forgotten something.

"…Damn!"

He still had to go to work tonight!

But it was already nearly six o'clock.

Moreover, in his current condition, even getting to the convenience store was questionable.

Helpless, Fujii Shu gritted his teeth, enduring the pain, and picked up the phone to call his shift-mate, Yuko Sakura.

"Moshi moshi, Fujii sang, what's up?"

The call was quickly connected, and Yuko Sakura's pleasant voice came through.

"Ah, Yuko-senpai, it's like this... I'm not feeling well today, can you cover my shift tonight?"

"I'm counting on you, I'll make it up next week!"

Yuko Sakura fell silent for a few seconds.

Fujii Shu thought she would decline or refuse outright, considering that she was a playful girl who always clocked in and out on time, and after work, she would rush straight to the nightlife scene.

Completely different from him, an ordinary, diligent junior college student.

"It's fine, no problem," Yuko Sakura responded quickly.

Fujii Shu was naturally full of gratitude and didn't think much of it.

"Thank you, Yuko-senpai!"

"It's nothing, really..." Yuko Sakura replied politely.

"Fujii, make sure to rest. I'm hanging up now."

"Mm, thanks for your concern, Yuko-senpai."

After hanging up, Fujii Shu let out a long sigh.

He lay back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling.

When would he finally get out of the miserable part-time worker life?

He was only in the second semester of his first year, and there were still over two years until graduation. Without part-time work, how could he support himself?

With that tiny living allowance, just surviving without starving was already a miracle.

The more he thought about it, the bigger his headache became. How could his deadbeat old man not leave some money for his biological son before he passed away?

Now all the family wealth was in the hands of Momoaki Eiko, that woman with a different family name.(When the original owner's father passed away, he had not married Momoaki Eiko. According to Japanese customs, Momoaki Eiko had not yet changed her surname.

Forget about marrying anyone; even making sure he didn't starve to death was a problem. The house had been taken over by those three women.

"Forget it…"

He couldn't just use the "Edo Tensei" jutsu to summon his deadbeat old man. Even if he did, who knows, maybe the old man would side with those three women.

Might as well save up money and leave this family as soon as possible.

"Sigh…" Fujii Shu sighed.

Or, maybe he should take out Momoaki Eiko and her daughters one by one and reclaim control of the Fujii family!

With that thought, Fujii Shu became deep in thought.

10 PM, Ogihara household.

After taking a shower and changing into a light pink pajama, Saki Ogihara glanced at her mother's room before rushing back to her bedroom and diving into bed.

"Click."

She turned off the light, and the room immediately fell into darkness.

After a few seconds, a faint white light appeared in the dark, shining on Saki Ogihara's face.

Saki Ogihara lay on her side, holding her phone with both hands, adjusting the screen brightness, and opening LINE.

She found Fujii Shu's profile among her few friends, clicked on the chat window, and hovered her finger over the keyboard, thinking about how to start the conversation.

[Are you there, Fujii-kun?]

She typed a line but quickly deleted it, feeling that it was too old-fashioned of an opening.

[Fujii-kun, are you asleep?]

She typed another line, carefully considering whether to add punctuation, biting her lip nervously before clicking send.

Half a minute later, the message status changed from "Delivered" to "Read."

"Not yet," came the reply.

At the same time, in Fujii Shu's bedroom on the second floor, the light had already been turned off. With the moonlight from the window, he pressed the send button.

"Fujii-kun replied!" Saki Ogihara's heart leapt with joy as she quickly typed another question: "Fujii-kun, are you feeling better?"

"Mm, much better, it doesn't hurt anymore."

This was a truthful answer, not Fujii Shu trying to appear tough.

The debuff from the Elixir of Iron had already worn off, and although he wasn't exactly energetic, he felt significantly better, with only minor external injuries left.

From this, it was clear that the system's Elixir of Iron was definitely stronger than adrenaline.

[That's good...]

Saki Ogihara felt relieved for Fujii Shu and, with her finger hovering over the screen, her gaze darted around uncertainly as she wondered what else to talk about.

After a while, she wrote: "Fujii-kun, what did you have for dinner?"

As soon as she hit send, she froze, feeling awkward, like a mole trying to dig a hole but getting stuck. She wished she could pull the blanket over her head and hide inside.

"Idiot, Ogihara Saki, what are you doing?" she scolded herself.

"Why do I keep asking Fujii-kun such boring questions!"

Her 18 years of life had hardly given her much opportunity to interact with the opposite sex. The most recent instance was two months ago when her Japanese literature teacher praised her essay, and she simply said, "Thank you, teacher."

Influenced by her mother, Saki Ogihara had never been in a relationship and didn't even have any male friends.

Except for Fujii Shu, who was chatting with her on LINE right now.

[I had beef bowl, what's up?]

[Nothing, it's nothing...]

[Is there something?]

[Nope.]

[Really nothing?]

[Mm.]

[Then I'll sleep?]

[Don't...]

The atmosphere fell into an awkward silence with each question and answer.

Compared to the shy and embarrassed Saki Ogihara, Fujii Shu on the other end of the phone wore an expression of helpless amusement.

"This girl, did she grow up eating kawaii-dora?" he thought.

"Is talking to me really such a difficult thing?"

"Should I tease her a bit?"

Fujii Shu smirked and typed three words in the chat: "Answer the phone!"

The next second!

"Doo doo doo!"

The silence in Saki Ogihara's bedroom was broken by the sound of a ringing phone. She jumped in surprise, quickly lowering the volume and covering her head with the blanket.

She hit the answer button and placed the phone to her ear, speaking softly, "Hello…"

"Is this Ogihara?" came Fujii Shu's youthful voice.

"Mm, it's me, Fujii-kun."

"Are you asleep?"

"Not yet, I just finished my shower."

"What did you have for dinner?"

"Huh? Chicken, tofu, and miso soup. Why, Fujii-kun?"

"Nothing, just asking. Haha."

Through the phone came Fujii Shu's laughter, and Saki Ogihara suddenly realized that he had just repeated everything she had said!

Oh no, her mole-like awkwardness was exposed, and now there was no place to hide!

With her face turning red, Saki Ogihara's reflection in the phone screen showed her quickly heating face.

"Fujii-kun, you did that on purpose!" she exclaimed.

For a moment, Saki Ogihara felt like hanging up and ignoring him.

But her inner voice told her: You can't do that.
