Chapter 46 - The third day of the tournament

The sun climbed over the towering coliseum, casting golden rays on the gathered crowd, buzzing with anticipation for the third day of the tournament. The energy in the air was palpable as the remaining eight contestants of the solo division prepared to showcase their skills.

Alex sat in the waiting area, his mind focused and calm. He had spent the previous night in deep meditation, reflecting on the battles ahead and honing his mastery of Phantom Step. Today, he felt a new sense of clarity, as if every piece of the puzzle had fallen into place. His confidence in the move, once elusive, had solidified.

As the announcer's voice boomed through the coliseum, announcing the first match of the day, Alex's gaze shifted toward the arena. The cloaked figure stood at the opposite end, their dark robes adorned with glowing yellow sigils. The crowd murmured, eager to see if anyone could challenge the mysterious fighter.

The cloaked figure's opponent, a seasoned swordsman, stepped into the ring but hesitated. He cast a wary glance at the imposing figure before him, then raised his hand. "I forfeit," he declared, much to the surprise of the audience. The announcer paused, then confirmed the forfeit, awarding the match to the cloaked figure. The crowd erupted in mixed reactions, some disappointed and others relieved.

Alex felt a pang of unease as the cloaked figure left the arena without so much as a glance toward the stands. There was something unsettling about how easily they advanced, yet he shook off the feeling. It was his turn to fight.

The announcer called his name, and Alex strode confidently into the arena. His opponent, a burly man wielding a large hammer, glared at him. The sigils of the coliseum lit up, and the terrain morphed into a dense forest, with trees and underbrush providing ample cover.

As the battle commenced, Alex's body moved instinctively. He activated Phantom Step, his form blurring as he dashed through the trees, his daggers glinting in the sunlight. His opponent swung the hammer wildly, attempting to catch Alex, but his movements were too fluid, too precise.

Alex weaved in and out of the forest, each step a calculated maneuver. With a flick of his wrist, he launched a throwing knife, narrowly missing his opponent's shoulder. The man growled, charging forward, but Alex had already vanished, reappearing behind him. A swift strike to the leg sent the burly man to his knees.

The crowd gasped as Alex appeared in front of his opponent, daggers crossed at the man's throat. The announcer declared him the winner, and the arena erupted in cheers. Alex exhaled deeply, the rush of victory washing over him. He had mastered Phantom Step, and it felt exhilarating.

The afternoon sun signaled the start of the duo battles. Only four teams remained, each vying for a spot in the finals. Kenji and Mia stood side by side, their weapons ready. Kenji adjusted his gauntlets, his mind already analyzing potential strategies, while Mia checked her quiver, her eyes scanning the newly formed battlefield—a rocky canyon with towering cliffs and narrow paths.

Their opponents were a pair known for their brute strength and relentless attacks. The duo entered the arena, their confidence evident. The announcer introduced both teams, and with a loud gong, the battle began.

Kenji charged forward, his fists ready to engage. His ability to adapt to his opponent's fighting style gave him an edge. He dodged a heavy swing from one of the opponents and retaliated with a powerful punch, sending the man stumbling backward.

Mia, perched on a high ledge, notched an arrow and took aim. Her enhanced vision allowed her to see the subtle shifts in the enemy's mana. She released the arrow, striking the second opponent in the leg, disrupting his advance.

Kenji continued his assault, each move more calculated than the last. His opponents struggled to keep up, their attacks becoming more desperate. Mia provided cover, her arrows flying with precision, forcing their enemies into a defensive stance.

Within moments, the battle reached its climax. Kenji delivered a final blow, knocking out one opponent, while Mia's well-placed shot incapacitated the other. The announcer declared their victory, and the crowd roared in approval.

Kenji and Mia exchanged a glance, a silent acknowledgment of their teamwork. They exited the arena, heading back to the locker room, where they found Alex waiting. The trio shared a sense of accomplishment, each knowing they had given their all.

As they sat in the stands, watching the remaining matches of the day, a sense of camaraderie settled over them. They were more than just teammates; they were friends, united by their shared experiences and the challenges they had overcome.

The day ended with the promise of more intense battles ahead. The tournament was far from over, but for now, they relished their victories, ready to face whatever came next.
