Chapter 30 - The Shifting Abyss

The clash of energies reverberated through the air, a violent storm of power as Eren and the figure in the shadows locked in an intense struggle. The ground beneath them cracked and trembled with every burst of force, the air itself bending and warping around the unnatural entity that opposed him.

Eren gritted his teeth, his hands crackling with the heart's energy, but it wasn't enough. No matter how much he pushed, the figure seemed to bend reality around him, the very rules of space and time warping at his command. It wasn't just fighting; it was as if the being existed on a different plane, a higher dimension entirely. Every blow Eren struck seemed to pass through it as if it were nothing more than an illusion.

"You still don't understand, do you?" the figure's voice echoed, distorted by the shifting nature of its form. "This world, this Tower, it is nothing more than a prison. A prison for entities like me. But that will change soon. The walls will fall, and everything will return to the void."

Eren narrowed his eyes, frustration rising. He had no idea what this being was, or what it meant by the void, but one thing was clear—it wasn't just after him. It was after everything.

As the figure moved again, Eren instinctively activated his defensive barriers. A pulse of energy shot outward, but the figure melted into the air, its form flickering as it disappeared from sight. Eren's senses heightened, scanning every inch of the space for any sign of its movement.

Suddenly, a sharp pain exploded across his back as an unseen force struck him. He was thrown forward, his chest slamming into the ground, the breath knocked from his lungs. Before he could recover, the figure's voice whispered in his ear, its tone mocking.

"Do you feel it? The void that awaits. It is inevitable. It always was."

Eren's vision blurred as he pushed himself back to his feet. The force of the figure's attack had drained him more than he expected. The heart's energy inside him flickered, struggling to stay stable under the pressure. His body was battered, his mind reeling from the intense encounter. But he refused to yield.

He clenched his fist, drawing on the last reserves of his power. The crystal in his palm pulsed once more, its energy syncing with his heartbeat, and for a brief moment, he felt the overwhelming force of the heart's power surge through him. It wasn't just energy—it was a connection, a link to something greater.

The figure reappeared in front of him, its form shimmering and unstable. It raised its hand, and the air around Eren began to twist once again. He could feel the pressure building, the gravity of the space increasing, pulling at him like an anchor.

But this time, he was ready.

With a shout, Eren thrust his hands outward, channeling the full strength of the heart's power into a wave of energy. The shockwave erupted from him, pushing the figure back. For a moment, the being's form flickered violently, as though it were being torn apart by the force. The distorted figure hissed in pain, its voice crackling with rage.

"You think this will stop me?" it snarled. "You are nothing compared to the power of the void. You are a fleeting spark in the endless darkness."

But Eren wasn't listening. His body was burning with power, his thoughts a blur of instinct and determination. He didn't need to understand everything this being had said. All he knew was that he had to stop it. The Tower, the world, his friends—everything he cared about was at stake.

The figure's form began to solidify once more, but it was weak, flickering with instability. Eren seized the opportunity, charging forward with all his might. The crystal in his hand flared brightly, its energy swirling around him, amplifying his strength.

In a final, desperate move, Eren thrust the crystal directly into the figure's core. The energy from the crystal surged through the being, and for a moment, everything was still. The figure's form twisted and writhed, its voice now a garbled screech of agony.

"You cannot—" the figure gasped, its words faltering. "You cannot control what you don't understand…"

With a deafening crack, the figure's form collapsed inward, its energy unraveling like a thread being pulled apart. Eren was thrown back, his body slamming into the ground as the figure's presence shattered into nothingness. The air returned to normal, the oppressive weight lifting from the atmosphere.

Panting heavily, Eren slowly pushed himself to his feet. He looked around, his mind still spinning from the intensity of the battle. For a moment, the Tower seemed eerily silent, the usual hum of machinery and distant sounds absent.

But that silence didn't comfort him. If anything, it filled him with dread.

"What… was that?" Eren muttered, wiping blood from his lip.

The crystal in his hand pulsed once more, its glow dimming as the last of its energy faded. It had responded to his call, helped him overcome the figure, but Eren knew that this victory was only temporary. The void, the being, whatever it was—it was still out there, and it wasn't done with him yet.

As the walls of the Tower around him slowly began to reassert their usual order, Eren couldn't shake the feeling that the calm was just the eye of a much larger storm.

And he was right in the middle of it.
