Chapter 2 - Exchange Of Life

Suddenly, the door sprang open, revealing the entrance of the child's father. "Where is my child?" he exclaimed, rushing towards his weeping wife, who tightly clutched a pale, lifeless infant.

The man possessed bright golden hair, a well-built muscular physique, and a remarkably youthful and handsome appearance. It felt like a million blades piercing his chest as he stared at the motionless baby in his hands.

His gaze then shifted to the midwife, who sadly shook her head, conveying the message without uttering a word.

"Nooo! My unborn child... that's not possible" He said as he couldn't believe it.

*Eyaaaah!*

However, amidst the sorrowful atmosphere, the young man heard the cry of a baby from crib. Startled, his eyes darted between the lifeless child and the one crying in the distance.

"What's going on?" He contemplated as he couldn't believe it.

He went closer to the crib and stared into it and saw a little child barely the size of a full length arm.

It became clear to him that his wife had actually given birth to twins.

Approaching the crying infant first, he gently lifted and patted the child. Locking eyes with the baby, he recognized the exact shade as his own and the same golden hue that adorned his hair.

"My son, Daddy is here," he whispered, cradling the baby close, as he carried him up from the crib. Afterwards, he turned to the midwife and have her the child.

Drawing nearer to his wife, who held his lifeless, he had bright silver-hair, he grasped the trembling arms of his wife and spoke softly.

"He is gone, and there is nothing we can do to change that. Nothing we would do would be able to bring him back. He is gone and he would want us to live on. It's not healthy for you to spend the entire day in tears. He will forever remain in our hearts." The young man concluded, gradually opening the grip of his wife's hands and gently taking the lifeless child from her.

Clasping the child tightly, he wasn't able to hold back his tears as he faced the golden door that was in front of him.

"Please, do not bury him. I want him to be set adrift on a boat, and do not burn the boat. Perhaps God can be faithful enough to bring back our child," she pleaded, as she immediately collapsed to the ground. The midwife hurried over to her.

"Mistress!" She called forth her Madam. The young man witnessed her fall but knew it was not fatal, merely a result of exhaustion. He nodded, determined to fulfill his wife's request.

A few hours later, the sun lowered on the horizon, and the cool evening breeze swept along the riverbank.

Standing behind the young man, who had just lost his child, were soldiers clad in radiant golden armor. Clutching a basket containing his lifeless infant, he walked through the center of the armored soldiers, who saluted him as he passed by.

Finally, he reached the edge of the mighty river, stretching far across rocky terrain and into the distance. Gently, he laid the basket on the riverbank, placing a soft towel and the sigil of their kingdom upon it. With a slight push, he set the basket in motion, watching it gradually drift away from them.

"May your soul rest in peace," were the young man's final words. He turned his back to the water, unwilling to witness where the tides would carry his lifeless child.

Guided by the gentle current and the river's glow, the basket carried the infant for thousands of miles until it reached a faraway land. It came to rest on the shore of a cave, catching the attention of an old man passing by with his fishing tools and basket.

The old man was curious to know what was in the basket so he approached the basket.

Drawing nearer, he discovered a pale, lifeless infant, as pale as snow white

"Little child, you shall not die. I am here," the old man softly reassured as he lifted the lifeless child. He removed a necklace he wore, revealing a crystal bottle containing a blue liquid—the elixir of life rejuvenation. Legends claimed that only elves, sacrificing half their lifetime of cultivation, could create such a potion. It was meant for dire situations, capable of altering fate and even raising the dead.

The old man uncorked the crystal bottle and brought it to the baby's lips, gently urging it to swallow. He closed the baby's mouth, and in a miraculous event happened as a small blue aura like spirit entered into the lifeless child. The skin of the child brightened, and suddenly, the once-dead baby sneezed, followed by cries of life.

"Eya... Eya... Eya..." the baby wailed.

"My Young boy, don't cry..sssssh!" The old man swung the child as he desperately tried to calm him down from crying.

Gathering his fishing tools with his left hands and the basket with the baby with his right, he made his way toward the cave's interior, following a path through the bushes.

It wasn't too long, the old man was in a remote village, where shabby houses constructed of wood lined the streets. Children ran and played, exuding the joy of innocence. In this close-knit community, everyone knew each other, and they were all astonished to see the old man carrying an infant in his arms.

After some time, he arrived at his humble house—a small thatched cottage like that of a 15th-century European style. Unlike the other houses along the street, which appeared worn-down, his house seemed to be properly built and sturdy.

Entering the house, the old man saw his wife, a woman with long, silver-grey hair, gently wrinkled cheeks, and bright silver eyes. Despite her aged appearance, she possessed an extreme beauty. She sat by the furnace on her rocky chair, engrossed in knitting with two rods. Upon hearing her husband's voice, she turned to face him.

"Honey, look at what I found," the old man exclaimed, extending his arms and presenting the infant wrapped in the red blanket to his wife.

His wife abandoned her knitting, rising from her chair, as if she had just laid eyes on her favorite toy. Hastily, she took the baby in her arms and was extremely excited.

"Is that a baby?" she held his cheeks as she stared at him.

"He is so cute... Let's keep him." she insisted as she immediately took the baby into her hands immediately from her husband.

"His name will be Ragon," she stared at the infant, whose eyes remained closed. She did not wait for her husband to make any comments, for she had made up her mind.

Her husband was quite surprised at the joyous look of his wife who had always been sad because they never had a child of their own. So he could see the joy in her heart as she could finally have someone to call her own.
