Chapter 28 - The Forest’s Fury

The group pressed onward, each step heavier than the last as the oppressive atmosphere of the Blackmist Forest seemed to tighten its grip around them. The twisted branches overhead cast eerie shadows, while the distant growls of unseen beasts echoed ominously through the fog.

Ye Chen led the way, his sword drawn and senses heightened. Every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig set his nerves on edge, but he remained composed, his sharp eyes scanning for threats. Behind him, Lin Yue walked in silence, her talismans glowing faintly as she kept watch for ambushes. Luo Yan brought up the rear, his massive axe resting on his shoulder, his expression one of grim determination.

"We're nearing the heart of the forest," Lin Yue said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The map indicates the token should be nearby."

Ye Chen nodded but didn't slow his pace. "Stay alert. The assassins were just the beginning. The forest won't let us take its treasures easily."

As if in response to his words, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble. The fog thickened, and a low, guttural roar echoed through the trees.

"What now?" Luo Yan muttered, gripping his axe tightly.

Before anyone could answer, the earth erupted in front of them, and a massive beast emerged. Its body was covered in jagged, blackened scales, and its glowing red eyes locked onto the group with predatory intent. The creature's claws dug into the ground, and its breath came in deep, rumbling growls that vibrated through the air.

"A Shadowscale Beast," Lin Yue said, her voice filled with unease. "This is no ordinary guardian."

The beast lunged without warning, its massive claws swiping toward Ye Chen with terrifying speed. He sidestepped the attack, his sword flashing as he struck back, but his blade glanced off the creature's hardened scales.

"It's too tough!" Luo Yan shouted as he charged in, swinging his axe in a powerful arc. The strike connected with the beast's shoulder, but it barely flinched, turning its attention to Luo Yan with an enraged roar.

Lin Yue quickly threw a talisman into the air, activating a barrier that deflected the beast's next attack. "Its weak point is its underbelly!" she called out. "But we'll have to expose it first!"

"Easier said than done," Luo Yan grunted as he narrowly avoided a swipe from the beast's tail.

Ye Chen's mind raced as he analyzed the creature's movements. It was fast and powerful, but its attacks were predictable, relying on brute strength rather than strategy.

"Lin Yue, keep it distracted with your barriers," Ye Chen said, his voice steady despite the chaos. "Luo Yan, aim for its legs. We need to bring it down."

The two nodded, immediately moving to execute the plan. Lin Yue unleashed a flurry of talismans, creating shimmering walls of energy that blocked the beast's path and forced it to change direction. Meanwhile, Luo Yan focused his attacks on the creature's hind legs, his axe striking with enough force to crack the ground.

The Shadowscale Beast roared in frustration as it struggled to keep up with their coordinated assault. Ye Chen took advantage of the opening, darting forward with incredible speed. His sword gleamed with a concentrated aura as he channeled his sword intent into a precise, devastating thrust aimed at the beast's exposed underbelly.

The blade pierced through the tough scales, and the creature let out a deafening scream, its massive body convulsing before collapsing to the ground.

For a moment, silence filled the forest, broken only by the group's heavy breathing.

"Is it… dead?" Luo Yan asked, cautiously approaching the fallen beast.

Ye Chen wiped his blade clean, his expression calm. "It's finished. Let's not waste any more time."

Lin Yue approached the beast's remains, her gaze lingering on its glowing red eyes, now dull and lifeless. "Creatures like this don't appear by chance. Someone—or something—is controlling the forest."

Ye Chen's eyes narrowed. "Then we'll find out who soon enough."

As they moved closer to their destination, the forest's resistance grew stronger. The air became colder, and the oppressive energy pressing down on them felt almost suffocating. Strange whispers echoed through the fog, and flickering shadows danced at the edges of their vision.

"Something's watching us," Lin Yue said, her voice tense.

"I feel it too," Luo Yan muttered. "But it doesn't feel… human."

Ye Chen remained silent, his grip on his sword tightening. The aura around him grew sharper, a clear warning to any unseen threats.

At last, they arrived at a massive clearing, where an ancient altar stood at the center. The altar was covered in strange runes that pulsed with faint light, and at its center lay the token they had been searching for—a circular medallion that radiated an intense, otherworldly energy.

"This is it," Lin Yue said, her voice filled with awe. "The Forest Heart Token."

As Ye Chen stepped toward the altar, the whispers grew louder, and the air trembled with unseen power. The fog around the clearing thickened, and ghostly figures began to materialize.

"These aren't assassins," Luo Yan said, his voice hushed. "What are they?"

"Wraiths," Lin Yue answered, her face pale. "They're bound to the altar, protecting it from intruders."

The wraiths moved closer, their translucent forms shimmering with an eerie glow. Their hollow eyes locked onto the group, and their silent screams filled the air with a bone-chilling resonance.

"We can't fight them all," Lin Yue said urgently. "They're immune to physical attacks."

"Then we don't fight," Ye Chen said firmly. "You two hold them off. I'll grab the token."

Without waiting for a response, Ye Chen sprinted toward the altar, his movements a blur. The wraiths swarmed toward him, but Lin Yue and Luo Yan intercepted them, using barriers and brute force to create a narrow path.

As Ye Chen reached the altar, he felt an overwhelming force pressing against him, as if the token itself was resisting his approach. Gritting his teeth, he reached out and grasped the medallion.

The moment his fingers touched the token, a surge of energy coursed through his body, and the forest erupted into chaos. The wraiths let out piercing screams, and the ground shook violently as the altar's runes flared to life.

"Ye Chen, hurry!" Lin Yue shouted, her voice barely audible over the cacophony.

Clutching the token tightly, Ye Chen turned and dashed back toward his companions. The wraiths gave chase, but the medallion's light seemed to repel them, creating a protective barrier around the group.

As they fled the clearing, the forest's oppressive energy began to fade, and the whispers fell silent. The group finally stopped to catch their breath, the token glowing faintly in Ye Chen's hand.

"We have it," Ye Chen said, his voice steady despite his exhaustion. "But this isn't over. Whatever controls this forest won't let us leave so easily."

Lin Yue nodded, her expression grim. "Then we need to be ready. The hardest part is yet to come."

In the distance, the forest seemed to shudder, as if preparing for its next move. The battle for survival was far from over, and the true danger had only just begun.
