Chapter 20 - Shadows of Retribution

The day dawned brightly, but within the Xuantian Sect, a storm of unrest brewed. The incident at the Forbidden Hall had reached the ears of the elders, and their anger was palpable. The air around the sect felt heavy with tension, as if the spiritual energy itself had been disturbed by the previous night's events.

In the Grand Hall, the sect's elders convened in an emergency meeting. Seated at the head of the table, Sect Master Lu Tianfeng listened silently as the others voiced their concerns.

"This is unacceptable!" Elder Zhu thundered, his fist slamming on the table. "The Forbidden Hall is sacred. For someone to break its seal and tamper with its artifacts—this is a grave insult to our sect's legacy."

"It's not just an insult," Elder Yan said grimly. "The Soul Devouring Blade was one of the most dangerous relics we've contained. If it had been fully unleashed, the consequences could have been catastrophic."

Elder Lin nodded, her expression severe. "The culprits must be found and punished. We cannot allow such recklessness to go unanswered."

Sect Master Lu Tianfeng finally spoke, his tone calm yet commanding. "The security of the Forbidden Hall will be reinforced. As for the perpetrators, we will investigate thoroughly. Until we have definitive proof, no one is to act rashly."

The elders reluctantly agreed, but the atmosphere remained tense.

Meanwhile, Ye Chen sat cross-legged in his chamber, his mind replaying the events of the previous night. Lin Yue had visited earlier, bringing news that the elders were already investigating the break-in. She had warned him to be cautious, but Ye Chen had no intention of staying idle.

As he meditated, he sensed a faint disturbance outside his door. Opening his eyes, he called out, "Who's there?"

The door creaked open, revealing a young inner disciple. His face was pale, and he looked around nervously before stepping inside.

"Senior Brother Ye," he whispered, his voice trembling. "I have news. It's about Li Haotian and Sun Liang."

Ye Chen's gaze sharpened. "Speak."

"They've gone into hiding," the disciple said. "But before they disappeared, I overheard them talking about… outside help. They mentioned someone powerful—someone who could help them exact revenge."

Ye Chen frowned. "Did they say who?"

The disciple shook his head. "No, but they seemed confident. Be careful, Senior Brother. I fear they won't stop until they've dealt with you."

After the disciple left, Ye Chen sat in silence, his thoughts racing. If Li Haotian and Sun Liang were seeking outside assistance, it meant the stakes were higher than ever. He needed to prepare for whatever was coming.

Later that day, Lin Yue joined him as they walked through the sect grounds. She had been keeping a close eye on the investigation, and her insights were invaluable.

"The elders are furious," she said. "But they don't suspect you. They're focused on finding Li Haotian and Sun Liang."

"Good," Ye Chen replied. "That gives us some time. But we can't wait for them to make their move. We need to stay ahead of them."

Lin Yue hesitated before speaking. "There's something else. I've been hearing rumors about a mercenary group operating near the sect. They specialize in… unconventional methods. If Li Haotian and Sun Liang have reached out to them, it could mean trouble."

Ye Chen's expression hardened. "Then we'll deal with them too, if necessary."

As night fell, Ye Chen returned to his chamber to refine his sword techniques. The battles ahead would require more than just raw power; they would demand precision, strategy, and unshakable resolve.

In a remote location outside the sect, Li Haotian and Sun Liang stood before a cloaked figure. The air around the stranger was thick with menace, and his voice was low and cold.

"You want revenge," the figure said, his tone mocking. "But do you have what it takes to pay the price?"

Li Haotian's fists clenched. "Name your terms. Whatever it takes, we'll do it."

The figure chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down their spines. "Very well. But remember, once you accept my help, there's no turning back."

As the two disciples made their pact with the stranger, the wheels of fate began to turn. In the shadows, alliances were forged, betrayals were planned, and the balance of power within the Xuantian Sect shifted ever so slightly.

Ye Chen stood at the center of it all, unaware of just how deep the conspiracy ran. But one thing was certain: the battles he had fought so far were merely the beginning. The true test of his strength, will, and destiny was yet to come.
