"That's because I've made myself clear," Nicholas interrupted, his tone growing colder. "I'm not interested in you, Clara." Since she could not take a hint, he intended to make himself clear. It helped that Selena was right here. His declaration hopefully made him a little innocent in her eyes.
The only person who was right for him was Yue'er.
Clara's eyes widened, her lips parting in disbelief. For a moment, she seemed frozen, as though the words had physically struck her. But then, her indignation flared again. "You promised me, Nicholas!" she shouted. "You said we had a future together! You said—"
"I never promised you anything," Nicholas cut her off sharply. His voice carried a weight of finality that echoed in the small corridor. "Whatever you imagined between us was in your head. I've never encouraged you, and I'm not going to start now."
