Chapter 3 - 2trials of power

---

The journey to prepare for the coming war against Nexus Riven had only just begun, but it already weighed heavily on Xion. As the days turned to weeks, his connection to the Ethereal Stream deepened, bringing with it a growing fear—fear of the power he now wielded.

In the quiet hours of the night, Xion often found himself alone, staring at the swirling cosmic energies coursing through his veins. He had become more than human. The power was intoxicating but terrifying. Each time he used it, the world seemed to bend and groan under the strain of his will. What if he lost control? What if, in a moment of weakness, he destroyed everything he fought to protect?

One such night, Aurelia found Xion standing at the edge of a vast cliff overlooking a distant realm below. The stars twinkled in the sky, but it was the faint flickers of life on distant planets that caught his attention.

"Do you ever wonder," he said softly, not turning around, "what it would be like to live without this power?"

Aurelia approached, her footsteps silent on the rocky ground. "I don't think I've ever truly known what it's like to be powerless," she said, her voice tinged with sadness. "But I can tell you this: even when it feels like the weight of the universe is on your shoulders, you're never truly alone."

Xion turned to face her, the soft glow of his energy illuminating the night. "But you're not like me. You were trained for this. I—"

Aurelia placed a hand on his shoulder, steadying him. "Don't compare yourself to me. Your journey is yours to walk. And right now, we all walk together."

Xion nodded slowly, his mind still heavy with doubt. But he found comfort in Aurelia's words.

The next day, Kael Myrren called for a meeting at their makeshift command center—a floating fortress made of dark obsidian and luminous metal. Kael, ever the strategist, stood at the head of the room, his expression unreadable as he studied the holographic projections of Nexus's growing army.

"We need a plan," Kael said, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. "Nexus's forces are vast, and they're only getting stronger. We can't afford to waste time. Xion, you're the key. But that means you have to get stronger—faster."

Xion shifted uneasily in his seat. "How can I get stronger when I'm barely holding myself together?"

"You don't get stronger by holding back," Kael replied, his gaze intense. "You get stronger by confronting your fears. You have to face the power within you, not as an enemy, but as part of you."

Zynra Aegis, who had been silent until now, slammed her fist into the table, making the entire room shake. "Kael's right. Power's no good if you're afraid to use it. Every time we've fought, it's been because we embraced what makes us who we are. You want to be a Weaver? Then weave. Don't stand back and hope things will change. You have to make them change."

Xion looked at Zynra, then to Kael and Aurelia. He felt the weight of their words, but a part of him still hesitated. "But what if I break everything? What if it's me who destroys it all?"

Zynra's expression softened. "Then you fix it." She leaned in, her massive form intimidating, but her eyes were full of understanding. "We all make mistakes. Even the strongest among us. But you've got something none of us have. That's what makes you our best chance."

Kael stepped forward, placing a hand on Xion's arm. "We're with you, no matter what. The only way forward is together."

Xion stared at his hands, glowing faintly with the power he could barely control. The weight of responsibility pressed on him, but for the first time, he didn't feel so alone.

The following week, the team embarked on a mission to neutralize one of Nexus's key lieutenants—a powerful sorceress named Mirael, who had been using dark magic to corrupt the Ethereal Stream itself. The plan was simple: infiltrate her fortress, sever her connection to the Stream, and bring her to justice. But, as with most things in this war, it wasn't that simple.

The team split into two groups. Aurelia, Zynra, and Kael would take the front, drawing Mirael's forces away, while Xion would slip in through a hidden passage and confront Mirael directly.

The fortress was a towering spire of obsidian and crimson energy, surrounded by violent storms of dark matter. Xion felt the presence of the Ethereal Stream grow unstable as he approached, as if it were reacting to the corruption within.

As Xion navigated through the twisting corridors, his heart pounded in his chest. The energy inside him felt restless, like an animal straining at the leash. He could feel Mirael's presence now, a dark pulse resonating through the air.

The confrontation was inevitable. Mirael stood before him in a room flooded with shadows, her form radiating an unnatural aura.

"Ah, the Omni-Weaver," she sneered. "I've heard much about you. Tell me, do you understand the power you wield?"

"I'm still learning," Xion replied, his voice steady despite the fear gripping him. "But I know one thing: I'm not here to play your game."

Mirael chuckled, her eyes glowing with malevolent energy. "You think you can stop me? You, a mere mortal, with no understanding of what true power is?"

The ground beneath Xion's feet trembled as Mirael unleashed a wave of dark energy. Xion instinctively reached for the Ethereal Stream, pulling it toward him, and for a moment, time seemed to slow.

The power surged through him—raw, untamed, infinite. He was drowning in it.

But he wasn't alone. Aurelia's voice echoed in his mind: "Remember, you are not alone."

Xion focused, drawing upon that strength, weaving a barrier of light that deflected Mirael's attack. The fortress around them groaned, collapsing as the battle raged on.

Mirael's eyes widened as Xion took control of the flow of energy, reversing Mirael's magic and trapping her in an unbreakable prison of light. "This ends now."

Xion's heart pounded in his chest as he forced Mirael into submission. The power was overwhelming, but he held on, knowing that this victory would bring them one step closer to stopping Nexus.

As the dust settled, Aurelia, Kael, and Zynra arrived, their faces showing signs of battle but their spirits unbroken.

"Nice work," Kael said, his usual stoic expression cracking into a rare smile.

Zynra slapped Xion on the back. "Told you, kid. You've got this."

Xion felt a strange sense of pride, tempered with the knowledge that this was only the beginning. Nexus was still out there, and more battles awaited.

But for the first time, Xion felt something he hadn't in weeks: hope.
