Chapter 5 - Training

"For now, let's split into groups," Lucius announced. "Luffy and Usopp will start their training first. The rest of you can relax on the beach - we'll trade after lunch."

"But I want to watch!" Nami protested, hands on her hips. "How do we know you're not going to teach them something better than what we'll learn?"

"Trust me, basic training isn't very exciting to watch," Lucius said. "It's mostly breathing exercises and muscle control. Like watching grass grow."

"He's right," Vivi added diplomatically. "We could use this time to look for Zoro and Sanji along the beach."

"And I need to check on our ship," Nami admitted. "Make sure it's properly anchored with this strange weather."

[Training Session Initiated]

[Students Selected: Monkey D. Luffy, Usopp]

[Current Goal: Basic Foundation Training]

After the others left, Lucius turned to his two remaining students. Luffy was bouncing on his toes with barely contained energy, while Usopp tried to look confident despite his obvious nervousness.

"Alright Luffy, let's start with you," Lucius said. "Iron Body requires understanding how every muscle in your body works together. It's like an orchestra - every instrument needs to play perfectly."

"Boring! Can't I just make myself hard like you did?" Luffy's shoulders slumped. "I want to learn the cool part!"

"That comes later. First..." Lucius paused, remembering how he used to teach farm kids about proper lifting technique. "Let me ask you something - when you throw a punch, do you just use your arm?"

"No way! I use my whole body!" Luffy demonstrated with a punch that stretched across the dojo. "See? My legs push, my hips turn, and then BOOM!"

"Exactly! Iron Body is the same - it's not just about hardening one part, but your entire body working as one. Like how a rubber band is strongest when it's evenly stretched."

That comparison seemed to click with Luffy, his eyes lighting up with understanding.

[Student Analysis - Luffy: High physical potential, low patience. Recommend practical demonstrations]

"Here's what we'll do," Lucius said, grabbing some training weights that had materialized. "Put these on your arms and legs."

"Heavy!" Luffy complained as he strapped them on. "They're like the time Grandpa made me carry rocks up the mountain!"

"Your grandfather made you do what?" Lucius asked, momentarily distracted.

"Yeah! For training! He's a Marine, so he's really strict. But I'm going to be King of the Pirates, so I have to get stronger than him!"

Lucius filed that interesting bit of information away for later. "Well, this training might be a bit less extreme. Now, stand in a horse stance." He demonstrated the wide-legged pose. "The weights will help you feel which muscles you're using."

For the next hour, Lucius had Luffy hold various stances while he adjusted the boy's posture. Each stance targeted different muscle groups that would be crucial for Iron Body. Despite his initial complaints, Luffy showed surprising dedication once he understood the purpose.

"My legs hurt," Luffy whined after forty minutes.

"Good! That means you're doing it right. Remember how it feels - those burning muscles are the ones you'll need to harden. Think of it like making rubber stronger."

[Student Progress - Luffy: Basic muscle awareness developing]

Next came breathing exercises. This proved especially challenging for Luffy, who kept getting distracted by clouds shaped like meat, birds flying past the window, and his own stomach growling.

"Focus on your breath," Lucius instructed patiently. "Feel your diaphragm expand and contract."

"My what?"

"The muscle under your lungs. Here." Lucius placed a hand on Luffy's stomach. "Feel how it moves when you breathe deeply?"

"Oh! Like when I inflate myself to bounce cannonballs back! Gomu Gomu no Fuusen!"

"Exactly! But instead of filling with air, you're learning to control that muscle precisely. It's like... having a gear that controls how tough your rubber becomes."

That explanation seemed to work better. They practiced breathing patterns while maintaining the stances, Luffy gradually learning to coordinate his muscle tension with his breath.

[Student Progress - Luffy: Basic breathing control achieved]

"Now for the hard part," Lucius said. "I'm going to tap different parts of your body. Try to tense just that spot without moving."

This proved nearly impossible for Luffy at first. When Lucius tapped his shoulder, he'd tense his entire arm. A tap on his back made him stiffen completely like a board.

"Smaller," Lucius kept saying. "Just the spot I'm touching. Imagine your rubber is getting harder in just that one point, like how you can stretch one finger without stretching your whole hand."

After many attempts and several breaks to keep Luffy's attention, he finally managed to isolate his muscle control somewhat.

"Much better! Practice these exercises whenever you can. Iron Body isn't just about being tough - it's about having complete control over every part of your body. Even rubber needs structure to be strong."

"Usopp, you're up," Lucius called. The sniper had been watching nervously from the corner, practicing finger gun poses when he thought no one was looking.

"The Great Captain Usopp is ready for any challenge!" he declared, though his knees were shaking. "I once trained ten thousand men in the art of finger combat!"

"Really?" Luffy asked with stars in his eyes.

"Focus, both of you," Lucius interrupted. "Finger Pistol requires precision and focus. As a sniper, you already understand the importance of accuracy."

"Of course! I can hit a fly's wing from a hundred paces! Even in a storm! While riding a giant goldfish!"

"Good. Then you'll understand that Finger Pistol is similar - it's about concentrating all your power into a single point. Like focusing sunlight through a magnifying glass."

[Student Analysis - Usopp: Good precision, lacks confidence. Focus on familiar concepts]

Lucius set up several paper targets at different distances. "First, we'll work on your finger strength. Make a finger gun position."

"Like this?" Usopp held up his hand in the classic gesture, adding unnecessary flourishes.

"Almost. Tuck your thumb closer to your palm. Your targeting finger should be completely straight, supported by the others. Think of it like aiming your slingshot - every little detail in your form matters."

They spent time just practicing the proper hand position, Lucius correcting small details in Usopp's form. To his credit, once Usopp understood this was about precision, his natural talent for accuracy began to show.

"Now, without moving your arm, practice jabbing just your finger forward. Quick and straight, like pulling a trigger."

Usopp did this hundreds of times, his finger getting sorer with each jab. Luffy watched with decreasing interest until he fell asleep in the corner.

"Ow! How is this different from just poking something?" Usopp asked, shaking out his sore hand.

"Regular poking uses your whole arm. Finger Pistol channels all your body's power through a single point. Here..."

Lucius had Usopp hold his arm out straight while he tied weights to his wrist.

"Keep practicing the jabbing motion, but now focus on keeping your arm perfectly still. Only your finger should move. Like how a good marksman's hands don't shake when taking aim."

[Student Progress - Usopp: Developing finger strength and control]

As Usopp practiced, Lucius introduced breathing exercises similar to Luffy's, but focused on timing the breath with the finger jab.

"Breathe in as you prepare, then exhale sharply as you strike. Like when you're shooting - you don't hold your breath through the whole shot, right?"

"Right! You release half a breath and then... oh, I get it! Just like when I'm using my special attacks!"

They worked on this coordination for another hour, Usopp's accuracy with the jabbing motion improving steadily. His confidence grew as he mastered each small step.

[First Training Session Complete - Usopp]

[Foundation established for future development]

"That's enough for today," Lucius announced, waking Luffy up. "Practice these exercises, but don't overdo it. Mastering the basics is more important than rushing to learn the full technique."

"My finger feels like it's going to fall off," Usopp complained, but he was still practicing the motion.

"My whole body hurts!" Luffy added cheerfully, stretching his arms to the ceiling. "Does this mean I'm getting stronger?"

"It means you're learning body awareness," Lucius corrected. "Strength without control is just wasted energy. Like a ship without a rudder - all power, no direction."

[Training Day 1 Complete]

[Students show promising foundation development]

[Host Teaching Assessment: Appropriate pace and method selection]

"Let's join the others on the beach," Lucius suggested. "You both need to rest, and we'll continue tomorrow. Remember to practice your breathing exercises."

As they walked out of the dojo, Lucius reflected on the session. The system had given him the knowledge of the techniques, but teaching them required drawing on his own experience as an educator. Just like teaching farming, it was about breaking complex skills down into manageable steps.

"Hey, Lucius-sensei," Luffy called as they walked. "Tomorrow can we skip to the cool parts?"

"No shortcuts," Lucius replied firmly. "But if you master these basics quickly enough..."

He left the sentence hanging, knowing that sometimes the best motivation was letting students imagine their own rewards.

"The Great Captain Usopp will master it in no time!" Usopp declared, jabbing his finger at a passing tree. Nothing happened, of course, but his form was notably better than when they'd started.

"Sure you will," Luffy grinned. "Right after I become King of the Pirates!"

Their friendly bickering continued as they headed toward the beach, where they could see the others waving them over for lunch. Lucius smiled, following his unusual students. Teaching was teaching, whether it was crop rotation or superhuman martial arts.
