Chapter 2 - The salt inspector

When a new department of salt was formed and trading of Ishwarpradas was prohibited, people started trading it secretly. Many types of frauds and deceits started. Some would find work in the land, while others would trick the officers. People would leave the respectable post of Patwari and were tempted to get the post of Inspector there to join the salt department. Vanshidhar

He went out in search of employment. His father was an experienced man. He started explaining, "Baya, you can see the plight of the house. We are burdened with debt. The girls have become marriageable. Do not pay attention to the position in the job. Look for such a job where there is some additional income. Monthly salary is like the full moon, which appears for a day and then gradually vanishes. Additional income is a flowing source, which always quenches thirst."

After this advice, father gave his blessings. Vanshidhar was an obedient son. He listened to these words carefully and left home. He left with good omen. As soon as he reached there, he got the post of Inspector of Salt Department. He was well-settled and his extra income was limitless. When the old Munshi ji got the good news, he was overjoyed.

It was winter and night time. The salt department's soldiers and watchmen were all fast asleep. It had not been more than six months since Munshi Vanshidhar had come here but in this short time he had charmed the officers with his efficiency and good conduct. The officers had started trusting him a lot. The river Yamuna flowed one mile east of the salt office, and there was a bridge of boats on it. The inspector was sleeping soundly with the door closed. Suddenly he opened his eyes and instead of the flow of the river, he heard the rumbling of carts and the noise of the boatmen. He got up. Why do the carts cross the river so late at night? There must be some problem. He wore his uniform, kept the pistol in his pocket and in no time he reached the bridge riding his horse. He saw a long line of carts crossing the bridge. He asked angrily, "Whose carts are these?"

There was silence for a while. There was some whispering among the men. Then the man in front said"Of Pandit Alopidin."

"Who is Pandit Alopodin?"

your corner

"From Dataganj?"

Munshi Vanshidhar Chowke. Pandit Alopidin is from this area

Now it was customary for British officers to come to their area for hunting and were their guests.

Do you want this to happen, Sama?

A

Munshi ji asked, "Where will the vehicles go?"

No

bah

The answer was, "Kanpur" but as soon as the question was asked what was in it, there was silence.

The Sahib's doubts grew stronger. He said loudly, "I am asking. What is loaded in these?" When he did not get any answer this time also, he tied the horse to a cart and lifted the sack and the confusion was dispelled. These were lumps of salt

Pandit Alopidin used to come riding on his decorated chariot, sometimes sleeping and sometimes awake. Suddenly

The carriage drivers came in a panic and woke him up and said, "Maharaj! The inspector has stopped the carriages and is standing there calling you." Pandit Alopidin had unshakable faith in Lakshmi. Justice and policy, all were in the hands of Lakshmi.

She makes them dance as she wishes. Lying down, he said proudly, "Let's go, we are coming." Saying this, Ji took a betel leaf and ate it with great confidence. Then he said to the inspector wrapped in his quilt, "Babuji, blessings! Tell me, what crime have we committed that the vehicles should be stopped?" Yashodhar said rudely, "Government orders!",It is you. We and you have suffered in vain. It is not possible that you were coming to my service on your own." This had some effect on Bashidhar. A new feeling of honesty. He said sternly, "We are not among those for whom you are in custody right now. You will be challaned as per your duty. They love me more. Jamadar Badlu Singh, you take him into custody

Pandit Alopidin was stunned. There was a commotion among the carriage drivers. This was the first time in the Pandit's life that he had to listen to such harsh words. Badlu Singh moved forward. Pandit ji had never seen Dharam disrespecting money so much. He thought that he was still a naive boy. He had not yet fallen into the trap of illusion and love. He said very humbly, "Babu sahab, don't do this. We will be destroyed. We will get our wealth by mistake. What will you gain by insulting us? We are not outsiders." Vanshidhar said in a harsh tone, "We do not want to hear such things."

The support which Alopidin had considered as a rock, seemed to have slipped from under his feet. His self-respect and wealth took a severe blow but he still had full faith in the power of money. He said to his agent, "Lalaji! I have presented a thousand rupee note to Babu Saheb. You are becoming a hungry lion at this time."

Vanshidhar got angry and said, "Not one thousand, not even one lakh can deviate me from the right path."

Dharma's mind was very annoyed at this senseless persistence and sacrifice rare even among gods. Now a fight broke out between the two forces. Dhan started jumping and attacking. The situation reached from one to five, five to ten, ten to fifteen and fifteen to twenty thousand, but Dharma stood firm and unmoved like a solitary mountain in front of this huge army with supernatural bravery.

Alopidin said in disappointment, "I don't have the courage to do more than this. You have the right to do more."

Vanshidhar challenged his jamadar. Badlu Singh, cursing the inspector in his mind, moved towards Pandit Alopidin. Pandit ji took two-three steps back in fear. He said very humbly, "Babu sahab, for God's sake, have mercy on me, I am ready to settle for twenty-five thousand."

"It's an impossible thing."

"At thirty thousand."

"No way possible!"

"Not even forty thousand?"

"Not forty thousand, it is impossible even at forty lakhs!"
